Erdos-Ko-Rado from intersecting shadows
A set system is called t-intersecting if every two members meet each other in at least t elements. Katona determined the minimum ratio of the shadow and the size of such families and showed that the Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem immediately follows from this result. The aim of this note is to reproduce the proof to obtain a slight improvement in the Kneser graph. We also give a brief overview of corresponding results
ko-ax photo [Selected by Tate Curator of Photography, Simon Baker]
ko-ax photo was an open submission competition selected by Simon Baker (Curator of Photography, Tate), Sue Steward (Photography critic, Telegraph, Observer, Guardian, BBC) and John Gill (Curator Brighton Photo Biennial and Founder Photoworks). The 10 artists selected all presented fascinating artworks that conceal narratives and ask questions of the viewer. Questions of beauty, family, decay and fantasy were all explored across over 50 works.</p

Formy imienne z sufiksem -ko w Kleszczelach na Podlasiu w połowie XVI w.
Given-Name Forms with Suffix -ko in Kleszczele, Podlasie Region in the Mid-16th Century
In the 16th century there was already an established system of Christian names of the inhabitants of eastern Podlasie. However, the first-name forms used in this territory at that time significantly differed phonetically and morphologically from their canonical equivalents. Christian names in Slavonic culture were transformed to be adapted to the phonetic and morphological structures of the recipient language system. Slavonic suffixal morphemes were added to phonetically transformed and abbreviated Christian names, thereby forming diversified hypocoristic forms.
In Podlasie, an important role in the process of morphological adaptation of Christian names was played by the suffix -ko. This suffix is present in more thanr 75% of all first-name forms with the basic -k- used between the 16th and 18th centuries in eastern Podlasie.
The popularity of first-name forms containing the suffix -ko (*-ъkо, *-ьkо) in eastern Podlasie in the 16th century is confirmed by the land survey document made by Dziewiałtowski in 1560 in Kleszczele, in which there are 89 different first-name forms formed by the suffix -ko from phonetically and morphologically adjusted Christian names.
Do przekształconych fonetycznie i skróconych imion chrześcijańskich dodawano słowiańskie formanty sufiksalne, tworząc zróżnicowane formy hipokorystyczne.
Thermal neutron cross-section and resonance integral of the W-186(n, gamma)W-187 reaction
We measured the thermal neutron cross-section and the resonance integral of the reaction W-186(n, gamma)W-187 by the activation method using a Au-197(n, gamma)Au-198 monitor reaction as single comparator. The high-purity natural W and Au metallic foils with and without a cadmium shield case of 0.5 mm thickness were irradiated in a neutron field of the Pohang neutron facility. The induced activities in the samples were measured by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry with a calibrated p-type high-purity Ge detector. The necessary correction factors for gamma-ray attenuation (F-g), thermal neutron self-shielding (G(th)), and resonance neutron self-shielding (G(epi)) effects, and the epithermal neutron spectrum shape factor (alpha) were taken into account. The thermal neutron cross-section for the W-186(n, gamma)W-187 reaction has been determined to be 37.2 +/- 2.1 barn, relative to the reference value of 98.65 +/- 0.09 barn for the Au-197(n, gamma)Au-198 reaction. The present result is, in general, in good agreement with most of the experimental data and the recently evaluated value of ENDF/BVII.0 by 5.7%. By assuming the cadmium cut-off energy of 0.55 eV, the resonance integral obtained is 461 +/- 39 barn, which is determined relative to the reference values of 1550 +/- 28 barn for the Au-197(n, gamma)Au-198 reaction. The present resonance integral value is in general good agreement with the recently measured values by 9%. The present result is lower than the evaluated ones by 10-13%. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
