"""Carving the world"": Inca monumental sculpture and landscape"
This thesis contains the results of an archaeological and ethnohistorical study of carved rocks, created by native Americans during the fifteenth and early part of the sixteenth centuries A.D. in Peru and adjacent Andean countries. In this study a typology and catalogue of forms of Inca monumental sculpture is presented. The physical context of these carved rocks is discussed, whether they have been integrated within architectural settings, or are to be found near springs, rivers and irrigation-canals. Arguments are presented to suggest that three separate styles can be distinguished.The concepts of the spatial districution of Inca monumental sculpture in Tahuantinsuyu (the ancient Empire of the Incas) are discussed. The pattern in the manufacturing of carved rocks in another theme treated in this thesis. A catalogue of all the carved rocks, observed in the field, augmented by materials reported in the literature have been presented in Appendix 1.Careful descriptions, accompanied by plans and photographs of carved rock complexes in Tahuantinsuyu are provided. The carved rocks in the valley of Cuzco have received particular attention, whether as individual carved rocks, as parts of architectural complexes or as elements in hydraulic systems. The Stone of Sayhuite has been described and analyzed in detail. This rock, carved in a figurative style, is remarkable for the complexity of its sculptural program.Indigenous classifications of carved stones are studied in a separate part. The ethnohistorical literature of the sixteenth and early seventeenth century is rich in allusions to stones in a variety of different Peruvian contexts. The concept 'huaca' is analyzed, followed by a discussion of the term 'huauque', a statue which functioned as a 'double' of the Inca king.The conclusions reached in this study deal with the relationship between sculptural activity and landscape within a general theory of Inca aesthetics and social structure. Finally the symbolic character of the carved rocks is discussed, followed by a treatment of their function and place in Inca society.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:08:24Z (GMT). Comparative assessment of the vulnerability and resilience of 10 delta cities
In this collaborative project of the Delta Alliance a framework for delta assessment is proposed, building on the work done for the Aquaterra 2009 conference in Amsterdam and elaborating recent recommendations of the World Estuary Alliance conference (hosted by WWF in Shanghai, June 2010) regarding the development of a worldwide assessment of estuaries by means of \u91scorecards\u92. This framework links the DPSIR approach with a Layer model for a delta, which should be seen as a first step towards a more elaborated framework, to be developed in due time with relevant stakeholders. The integrated approach takes into account the different \u91layers\u92 of the delta system and related governance issues. Three physical planning layers are recognized: the Occupation layer (land and water use), the Network layer (infrastructure), and the Base layer (natural resources), each with different but interrelated temporal dynamics and public-private involvement. The framework is used for describing deltas in a uniform format in order to make a comparative overview and analysis easier. Building on the contacts of the Delta Alliance (and World Estuary Alliance) each delta description is prepared by a Delta Wing Coordinator of the Delta Alliance (or another main contact person), in most cases in cooperation with several (sectoral) experts
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) injection into a partially-depleted gas condensate reservoir: A case study for optimal storage and re-use for field life-cycle extension through enhanced hydrocarbon recovery
A pilot for a large scale, fully integrated chain of CO2 capture, transport and storage (CCS) has been initiated in the port of Rotterdam. The initiative aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of CCS and show that it can be deployed on a large scale for power plants and energy-intensive industries that emit large volumes of CO2. The partially-depleted Q16-Maas gas condensate field could potentially be used to permanently store the captured greenhouse gas (CO2). The case study shows the potential that this field has for CO2 storage and also examines other options for life-cycle extension. The case study is based on macroscopic scale reservoir behaviour and simulated in the fully compositional simulator, Eclipse 300. Gas reservoirs have a proven track record for safely trapping gaseous phases in the subsurface over long geological timescales. As long as initial reservoir conditions, mainly pressure (=296,5 bar), are not exceeded, CO2 in supercritical phase should be safely stored. According to literature, with increasing storage time, the CO2 is even trapped more securely, although this process may take hundreds to thousands of years.The results of the case study show that approximately 1.1 million tonnes of pure CO2 can be stored in Q16-Maas field. By side-tracking the original well and producing the attic gas in the reservoir, 160 million cubic meters of additional gas can be recovered, along with condensate. If the side-tracked well is then converted to a CO2-injection well, the CO2 storage capacity is increased to 1.4 million tonnes. This injectable CO2 volume is less than the two million tonnes originally estimated and this is due to the influx of water from a strong aquifer that has partially filled the void left by depleting the gas field.The possibility of enhanced gas and condensate recovery using CO2 has also been investigated in this case study, as the use of CO2 for miscible floods in hydrocarbon reservoirs has been proven and used successfully as a tertiary recovery method. The reservoir simulation of the Q16-Maas field shows that there is no additional hydrocarbon recovery by CO2 flooding. Sidetracking to and producing from an updip location in the reservoir is equally as productive. The reason for this is attributed to presence of a strong water aquifer, together with the varying reservoir quality and thickness prevents the successful application of CO2 enhanced hydrocarbon recovery. The total cost of transport and storage (OPEX and CAPEX) was estimated to be 71.5 million euro. Assuming CO2 storage volume of 1.4 million tonnes, the project would need to receive roughly 50 euro/tonne in order to breakeven for storing and transporting the CO2, the capturing is not included
Structure, Organization, and Expression of the lct Gene for Lacticin 481, a Novel Lantibiotic Produced by Lactococcus lactis
The structural gene for the lactococcal lantibiotic lacticin 481 (lct) has been identified and cloned using a degenerated 20-mer DNA oligonucleotide based on the amino-terminal 7 amino acid residues of the purified protein. The transcription of the lct gene was analyzed, and its promoter was mapped. DNA sequence analysis of the lct gene revealed an open reading frame encoding a peptide of 51 amino acids. Comparison of its deduced amino acid sequence with the amino-terminal sequence and the amino acid composition of lacticin 481 indicates that the 61-residue peptide is prelacticin 481, containing a 27-residue carboxyl-terminal propeptide and a 24-residue amino-terminal leader peptide which lacks the properties of a typical signal sequence and which is significantly different from the leaders of other lantibiotics. The predicted amino acid sequence of prolacticin 481 contains 3 cysteines, 2 serines, and 2 threonines which were not detectable in amino acid analyses of mature lacticin 481. Based on these results and on characterization by two-dimensional NMR techniques, a structural model is proposed in which 2 cysteine residues are involved in lanthionine and one in β-methyllanthionine formation, and a 4th threonine residue is dehydrated. This model predicts a molecular mass for lacticin 481 of 2,901, which is in excellent agreement with that obtained from mass spectrometry.
Measurement of the ratio R = sigma(w) Br (W) ---> mu neutrino) / sigma(Z) Br (Z ---> mu mu) and gamma(W) total at the CERN proton - anti-proton collider
An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb-1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN ppBAR Collider runs at square root of s = 0.63 TeV, yields R = sigma(w)Br(W --> mu-v)/sigma(z)Br(z --> mu-mu) = 10.4(-1.5)(+1.8)(stat.) +/- 0.8(syst). We find R = 9.5(-1.0)(+1.1)(stat. + syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983-1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, I(w) (tot) = 2.18(-0.24)(+0.26) (exp.) +/- 0.04 (theory) GeV/c2
Ecotoxicological evaluation of effluent and related receiving water, Location I, The Netherlands
