Share reacquisitions, surplus cash, and agency problems
This paper investigates the role that excess cash plays in explaining actual open market share reacquisitions and examines the impact of agency problems on the payout decision. Using data from the U.K., where disclosure regulations make it possible to directly measure the volume and value of shares reacquired, we find that repurchase activity clusters in cash generative industries where investment opportunities are scarce. Holding investment opportunities constant at the firm level, we find that abnormally high cash flows from operating and (to a lesser extent) investing activities drive both the probability of a repurchase and the amount spent reacquiring shares. Comparing a subset of repurchases that are unambiguously driven by the desire to distribute surplus cash with a cash-matched sample of nonrepurchasing firms, we find that repurchasers are characterized by lower managerial entrenchment. Repurchasers also report superior improvements in postrepurchase operating performance and are less likely either to fail or be targeted in corporate control contests during the two-year period following the payout decision. Our results support the view that managers use share reacquisitions as flexible tool for distributing transitory cash surpluses, but only in the absence of serious agency problems between inside and outside shareholders
The Christ Hymn of Colossians 1:15-20: Drawing from the Wisdom Tradition in Hellenistic-Judaism
The focus of this thesis is to explore whether the author of Colossians 1:15-20 strategically appropriated language and concepts typically employed to depict Wisdom in the Hellenistic-Judaic tradition and adapted it to give expression to his faith in the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. While most biblical scholars agree that Col. 1:15-20 reveals at least some linguistic and conceptual dependence upon the role of Wisdom in the Wisdom literature, they disagree about the extent of such dependence. For example, whereas theologians such as Gordon Fee emphatically deny any linguistic and conceptual ties between the two, other authors such as Eduard Schweizer conclude that the first stanza of Col. 1:15-20 is so obviously dependent upon the Wisdom literature that it could be quoted word by word in the Wisdom literature. In this thesis, it will be argued that the author of Col. 1:15-20, like a wise scribe trained for the kingdom of heaven, masterfully adopted what was previously said of Wisdom in the Hellenistic-Judaic tradition (i.e., brought out the old) and creatively adapted it to Christ (i.e., brought out the new) to express both the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. This, in turn, not only enabled the author present a cosmic vision of Christ, but also to refute a novel teaching that was threatening the church at Colossae
Carefully hidden away: excavating the archive of the Mapungubwe dead and their possessions
Ever since Jerry Van Graan first stumbled upon golden artefacts in 1933, Mapungubwe - an Iron Age civilisation that existed in the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers between 900 and 1300 AD - has been the subject of contestation. Initially knowledge production about Mapungubwe was informed by the need to make a case for the late arrival of Bantu-speaking people in Southern Africa ? a now discredited theory used to justify the subjugation of Africans. In the post-apartheid era, Mapungubwe became a focal point for a new form of myth-building: the myth of liberation and a romantic past but, in my view, with a neo-liberal bias. In this dissertation I interrogate the role played by the disciplines of archaeology and physical anthropology in the political contestation that has surrounded Mapungubwe, focusing on the production of knowledge. I do this by investigating the claim that Mapungubwe was shrouded or hidden away. In particular, I ask: What happens when disciplinary workings, in the course of knowledge production, construe an archive? What do museums, archives and other memory institutions hide and what do they reveal? What gets acknowledged as archive and what is disregarded? How is this knowledge presented in the public domain over time? Lastly, what happens when the archive is construed differently? My interrogation lays bare the continued discomfort and improvisation that prevails among those disciplines or institutions that engage with Mapungubwe. I have chosen to organise the core chapters of the thesis according to specific timeframes: before apartheid, during apartheid and after apartheid. This is done to demonstrate how archaeology, claimed as a science, was a powerful strategy deployed to exchange the messiness for the "true" knowledge of the past. The research on Mapungubwe, by way of the Greefswald Archaeological Project, was the most prolonged research project in the history of South Africa. Its four research phases, which began in 1933 and ended in 2000, mutated as the broader political landscape shifted. As a result, everything that can possibly play itself out in broader post-apartheid South Africa is present in Mapungubwe: contested claims, racial history, land dispossession, apartheid and the military, repatriation, post-apartheid claims, nationalism, pan-Africanism, ethnicity and more. This thesis demonstrates how the disciplinary practices of archaeology were instrumental in keeping Mapungubwe shrouded. An example of this "shrouding" is the deployment of highly technical language in writing about Mapungubwe. Before the end of apartheid, this epistemic hiding offered a convenient retreat for the discipline, to avoid engaging with issues facing South African society at large. This placed the discipline in a position of power, a position of "truth" and "objectivity". All inconvenient forms of knowledge were simply disregarded or silenced through choices, made by powerful institutions and individuals, about what was worthy of being archived. However, when the archive is differently construed, a different picture emerges

Background study of the New Testament: its function and value
Continued 2001 as 'Verbum et Ecclesia'To be able to understand any normal linguistic utterance, information
regarding the context within which it functions, is of decisive importance.
For that reason every exegete of the New Testament has to develop a broad
frame of reference regarding the Jewish and Graeco-Roman world within which the New Testament documents originated. In spite of various obstacles, our knowledge of that world has increased immensely over the
last century. The exegete should, however, also carefully distinguish between textual world, which is a construct of the author, and real world.
As illustration of the value of background knowledge Romans 13:1-7 is discussed. It seems that both anti-Roman tendencies in Palestine and dissatisfaction with the Roman taxation system led to Paul's admonitions in
this passage. It is also shown how several details of the text become transparent in the light of background information. The danger inherent in accentuating background study at the cost of the text itself is also
illustrated.http://explore.up.ac.za/record=b102527

Penerapan Gaya Desain Modern Natural Pada Perancangan Interior Museum Teh Di Surabaya
Indonesia is one of the largest tea producer in the world. However, Indonesia doesn't have a place to give an information about the tea plants especially in Surabaya. The lack of interest of the people of Surabaya to go to the museum is also a problem due to the museums in Surabaya are less attractive and the people in Surabaya prefer to spend their leisure time at the mall. Interior design of a tea museum in Surabaya aims to provide a place for introducing tea plants as well as becoming one of the recreational place based in education to the people of Surabaya. Interior design of the tea museum has a different design style from the other museums in Surabaya, that is with the application of modern natural design style, also being the only museum in Indonesia, which is located in the mal
Efektivitas Program Layanan Pascarehabilitasi Korban Penyalahgunaan Napza di Yayasan Medan Plus
This writing originated from the researcher's interest in residents of substance
abuse of Narcotics, Psychotropic and Addictive Substances who underwent
rehabilitation treatment as the initial stage and posthabilitation treatment as an
advanced stage. In this paper, the researcher conducts research on the
Pascarehabilitation Program as a follow-up program for residents who have
completed the rehabilitation program. This program is run by one of the IPWLs in
Medan, namely the Medan Plus Foundation, with the aim of maintaining resident
recovery and preventing client reuse or relapse. Medan Plus Foundation provides
3 vocational post-rehabilitation programs. The author conducts research to see the
effectiveness of the Pascarehabilitation program that has been running. In this
research, the author uses a qualitative method by using 4 aspects of effectiveness
measurement theory according to Budiani, namely: Program Target Accuracy,
Program Socialization, Program Objectives, and Program Monitoring. The results
showed that the Pascarehabilitation Program has been effective in preventing client
reuse, it can be seen from residents who have carried out their social functioning
well and the client's lifestyle that is applied to clients while undergoing the
Pascarehabilitation program.94 HalamanSkripsi Sarjan
