Vredeman de Vries: geometry and freedom
Full text linkAs a result of his highly imaginative perspectival illustrations, late sixteenth-century Dutch architect Hans Vredeman de Vries remained at the pivot point of transferring perspectival developments from Italy to a northern European setting. He brought about a revolution in the genre of the architectural city-view, stood as a giant of that artistic category, and initiated a widespread architectural following that could be felt in buildings from every province of his home country to as far away as regional towns in Peru.
This essay introduces the use of geometry in Vredeman’s illustrations from his 1604 treatise Perspective and gives an account of the meanings behind vantage points, picture planes, and the viewing subject in those representations. A commentary on the notion of repetition in perspectival vistas and an explanation of the significance surrounding the placement of the centric point in his engravings is also dealt with. The centric points of Vredeman’s plates are seldom placed on a blank architectural surface. Instead, we encounter deliberate openings that allow us to travel beyond the pictorial plane and that remind us of the artificial nature of the environment being shown. Someone might theoretically be looking back at us, configuring the world before us, and thereby reinforcing the arbitrariness of our point of view.
Overall, this paper aims to look anew at the symbolic significance of the perspective engravings of Vredeman de Vries. The writing ends with a summary on what it might mean to transcend a perspective.Publisher PD

Speaking of clans: language in Awyu-Ndumut communities of Indonesian West Papua
Full text linkThe place of language in Awyu-Ndumut speech communities of the Indonesian province of West Papua is investigated from the point of view of the parallel but interconnected worlds of clan lands and nation-state sponsored settlements, with institutions such as schools and churches. First, language and identity, language names, multilingualism, linguistic ideologies and special speech registers are discussed from the perspective of clan-based cultural and linguistic practices. Second, the relationship between Papuan languages and Indonesian is investigated from the perspective of the dynamics of the clan land/settlement opposition. Indonesian is talked about by Awyu-Ndumut speakers both positively and negatively. Positively, they speak of it as an interethnic lingua franca. Negatively, they speak of it as the language of "demons", that is people outside the boundaries of Awyu-Ndumut social personhood
Telematics in education:the Dutch case
Full text linkIn the Netherlands and elsewhere, the rapid technological developments in society and the rapidly escalating interconnectiveness within Europe and with the rest of the world are reflected in the sorts of educational developments that are taking place. Even in a small country as The Netherlands, the need for and use of telecommunications in education is becoming a premise. An ongoing dilemma for educational policy makers in general is that the tasks of stimulating innovations and preparing for future trends in society are often difficult to harmonize with tasks related to the ongoing needs and demands present in the educational system (Collis, Veen, & De Vries, 1993). This dilemma becomes particularly challenging with respect to telecommunications. The Dutch government has given low priority to telecommunications in its overall policy for information technology in education. In this article we will examine the current situation in The Netherlands for tl1e use of telecommunications in education. Most of the findings are based on a recent year-long study (Collis, Veen, & De Vries, 1994a&b) by the same authors
De Vries Powers and Proximity Specker Algebras
Full text linkBy de Vries duality, the category KHaus of compact Hausdorff spaces is dually equivalent to the category DeV of de Vries algebras. There is a similar duality for KHaus, where de Vries algebras are replaced by proximity Baer-Specker algebras. The functor associating with each compact Hausdorff space a proximity Baer-Specker algebra is described by generalizing the notion of a boolean power of a totally ordered domain to that of a de Vries power. It follows that DeV is equivalent to the category PBSp of proximity Baer-Specker algebras. The equivalence is obtained by passing through KHaus, and hence is not choice-free. In this paper we give a direct algebraic proof of this equivalence, which is choice-independent. To do so, we give an alternate choice-free description of de Vries powers of a totally ordered domain
