Social conformity is due to biased stimulus processing: electrophysiological and diffusion analyses
Hundreds of studies have found that humans' decisions are strongly influenced by the opinions of others, even when making simple perceptual decisions. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether this effect can be explained by social influence biasing (early) perceptual processes. We employed stimulus evoked potentials, lateralized readiness potentials (LRPs) and a diffusion model analysis of reaction time data to uncover the neurocognitive processes underlying social conformity in perceptual decision-making. The diffusion model analysis showed that social conformity was due to a biased uptake of stimulus information and accompanied by more careful stimulus processing. As indicated by larger N1-amplitudes, social influence increased early attentional resources for stimulus identification and discrimination. Furthermore, LRP analyses revealed that stimulus processing was biased even in cases of non-conformity. In conclusion, our results suggest that the opinion of others can cause individuals to selectively process stimulus information supporting this opinion, thereby inducing social conformity. This effect is present even when individuals do not blindly follow the majority but rather carefully process stimulus information

Ablation threshold of GaN films for ultrashort laser pulses and the role of threading dislocations as damage precursors
The laser-induced ablation threshold of c-plane GaN films upon exposure to ultrashort laser pulses was investigated for different wavelengths from the IR to the UV range and pulse widths between 0.34 and 10 ps. The one-pulse ablation threshold ranges between 0.15 and 3 J/cm 2 and shows an increase with the wavelength and the pulse width, except for deep UV pulses. Based on a rate equation model, we attribute this behavior to the efficiency of seed carrier generation by interband absorption. In addition, the multi-pulse ablation threshold was analyzed. Accumulation effects are more prominent in case of IR than with UV pulses and are closely linked to damage precursors. By a thorough structural investigation, we demonstrate that threading dislocations, especially those with a screw component, significantly contribute to laser damage, since they provide a variety of dispersed states within the band gap
Compression based entropy estimation of heart rate variability on multiple time scales
Heart rate fluctuates beat by beat in a complex manner. The aim of this study was to develop a framework for entropy assessment of heart rate fluctuations on multiple time scales. We employed the Lempel-Ziv algorithm for lossless data compression to investigate the compressibility of RR interval time series on different time scales, using a coarse-graining procedure. We estimated the entropy of RR interval time series of 20 young and 20 old subjects and also investigated the compressibility of randomly shuffled surrogate RR time series. The original RR time series displayed significantly smaller compression entropy values than randomized RR interval data. The RR interval time series of older subjects showed significantly different entropy characteristics over multiple time scales than those of younger subjects. In conclusion, data compression may be useful approach for multiscale entropy assessment of heart rate variability.Mathias Baumert, Andreas Voss, Michal Javorkahttp://embc2013.embs.org
