Previously we described the vascular extracellular matrix remodeling induced by normal VLDL at physiological levels 1) Particularly, we described the differences in chondroitin sulfate/ dermatan sulfate proteoglycans (CS/DS-PGs) according to the endothelial cell phenotypes. 2) The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression pattern of CS/DS-PGs in the presence of increasing levels of N-VLDL. Human N-VLDL were isolated by ultracentrifugation from healthy volunteers. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HlNEC) were obtained and cultured as described by Ulrich- Merzenic. 3) Then, HlNEC were incubated with 0,75 and 100 mcg/mL of lipoprotein for 24 h. Protocols were approved by the Bioethics Committee of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. After treatment, CS/DS-PGs were characterized through: 1) PG core protein secretion, specifically decorin, biglycan, and versican analysis by immunoblot; 2) glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) content studied by reverse phase HPLC; 3) the levels of chondroitin N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase-2 (ChGn-2) and chondroitin-4-0-sulfotransferase-1 (C4ST-1) mRNA by RT-PCR. A significant increase in the protein core of decorin and biglycan was detected after treatment (0 vs 75 and 0 vs 100 mcg/mL N-VLDL,p<0.05, n=3), whereas for versican the increase was only observed at 75 mcg/mL (0 vs 75 mcg/mL N-VLDL,p<O.OOl,n=3). A significant increase in CS and DS chains was detected at both levels of N-VLDL (38.5±15.0; 388.0±20.0 and 82.5±50.0 ng/mL; 0, 75 and 100 mcg/mL N-VLDL,p<0.05, n=3), accompanied by an increase in the sulfation ratio 4S/0S of CS and DS chains (4.88±0.13; 13.97±1.8; 14.53±11.46; 0, 75 y 100 mcg/mL, n=3). No differences were observed in ChGn-2 and C4ST-1. At physiological levels, VLDL induced a CS/DS-PG secretion pattern that may contribute to the atheroprotective properties of this endothelial phenotype; such characteristics were lost in the presence of higher levels of the lipoprotein. Our results highlight the importance of CS/DS PGs as a new target for atherosclerosis treatment, Bibliografia 1. Respectivamente, a primeira mostra individual e a primeira retrospectiva. The painter Alfredo Volpi (1896-1999) was born in Italy and raised in Sao Paulo beside immigrant artists. He is also considered, by many scholars, one of the most important Brazilian painters. Several critics analyzed his work, almost always resorting to a narrative regarding his biography and personality. This way of analyzing Volpi, although still present nowadays, date back to Mario de Andrade (1893-1945) and Mario Pedrosa (1900-1981). More specifically, to the period between 1944 e 1957, when, in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, important exposées of Volpi¿s work took place. Respectively, his first individual display and the first retrospective. It is in this precise period that Volpi pointed Brazilian and ascend to our pantheon. I took this public personality as analytical focus, which means that I leaned over the relation between art critics and the artist himself, as well as the dialogue between their expectations and his artistic production. In this relatively tense conversation, the notion of personhood, a classical anthropological topic, is deployed to shuffle the subject¿s position and his work. In this dissertation, both painter and painting create themselves simultaneously and divide the heuristic prerogative for that process¿ apprehension. In making Volpi Brazilian, the critics manage to renew the history of art and render relative established canons. Put it differently, in instituting a specific personality ¿ an isolated proletarian man living in the Sao Paulo¿s suburbs with artistic penchant ¿ the artist and his critics uncoiled the national history of art. That process, viewed by another angle, revealed the importance of immigrant relation nets and also the centrality of institutions, such as the technical schools that, in sao Paulo, made possible the outcome of an Brazilian iconography created by immigrants and their children. The artist, through his work, and the art critic are mirrored in one another. They both reveal a negotiation surrounding ideas about nationalism and modernity that locate and consecrate Alfredo VolpiMestradoAntropologia SocialMestre em Antropologia Social2013/09275-2FAPES

Noise assessment in the diagnosis of rolling element bearings

    No full text
In this paper we perform a noise analysis to assess the degree of robustness to noise of a neural classifier aimed at performing multi-class diagnosis of rolling element bearings. We work on vibration signals collected by means of an accelerometer and we consider six levels of noise, each of which characterized by a different signal-to-noise ratio ranging from 40.55 db to 9.59 db. We classify the noisy signals by means of a neural classifier initially trained on signals without noise, then we repeat the training process with signals affected by increasing levels of noise. We show that adding noisy signals to the training set we manage to significantly increase the classification accuracy

This thesis aims to investigate the process of modernization and routinization of modern art in Brazil, focusing on the works of Alfredo Volpi and João Cabral de Melo Neto. Cabral\'s poems and Volpi\'s paintings are seen as products of a new \"modern\" context for the art in Brazil in the 1950s and, at the same time, as producers of this same context, since both establish important nexus for its social, theoretical and artistic justification. This research aims to contribute, mainly by close critical readings of poems and paintings, to the reflection on the development and contradictions of modern art in Brazil
