Incidence of various etiologic agents of superficial mycosis

Malbrán se realizó un estudio retrospectivo de los resultados correspondientes a 1225 muestras de micosis superficiales provenientes de pacientes ambulatorios de ambos sexos (95% adultos y 5% niños). La frecuencia de aislamiento de los agentes causales de dermatomicosis fue la siguiente: dermatofitos 67,65%, levaduras 25,91%, Malassezia furfur 5,91% y otros hongos (66,58%) seguido en frecuencia por el Trichophyton mentagrophytes 20,05%, Microsporum canis 7,97%, Epidermophyton floccosum 5,14% y Microsporum gypseum 0,26%. Las localizaciones más frecuentes fueron una uña de pie 29,17%, pie 28,19%, uña de mano 17,81% y piel lisa 14,73%. En cuanto a la eficiencia de los métodos diagnósticos, el examen directo detectó el 98% de los casos con clínica compatible y el 77% de los casos con aislamiento positivo
First clinical isolation of an azole-resistant aspergillus fumigatus isolate harboring a TR46 Y121F T289A mutation in South America
One of the most recently described Aspergillus fumigatus CYP51Amediated azole resistance mechanisms is TR46 Y121F T289A. Clinical A. fumigatus strains harboring these substitutions have been reported worldwide, with the exception of South America. We describe the first clinical A. fumigatus strain with this resistance mechanism isolated from an Argentinian patient. The strain was isolated in 2009 (1 year after the first-described mutant in United States), demonstrating that these alleles were scattered worldwide earlier than previously thought.Fil: Isla, Guillermina. In vitro interactions of antifungal agents against clinical isolates of Fusarium spp

Departamento de Micología; Argentina.The in vitro activities of amphotericin B (AMB), itraconazole (ITC), voriconazole (VCZ) and terbinafine (TBF) alone and in the combinations AMB+VCZ, TBF+ITC and TBF+VCZ were evaluated against 29 clinical isolates of Fusarium spp. (15 Fusarium solani, 7 Fusarium oxysporum, 2 Fusarium decemcellulare, 2 Fusarium dimerum and 3 other Fusarium spp.). Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined using the method of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and the interaction activity was calculated using the fractional inhibitory concentration index. The four antifungal drugs tested alone showed very limited activity against most of the isolates. In contrast, the combination TBF+VCZ showed synergy for 21 isolates. The combination AMB+VCZ showed synergism for only five strains. No interaction or antagonism was observed among the remaining strains. TBF+ITC showed no interaction for 18 strains. The in vitro antifungal activity of the drugs alone and in combination varied for different species. These results corroborate previous in vitro studies in which the combination TBF+VCZ showed synergy against Fusarium spp., although further studies are needed to elucidate its potential usefulness for therapy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Aspergilose em aves domésticas e silvestres da Argentina
Aspergillus species are widely distributed throughout the world and are capable of developing parasitic and saprophytic ways of life, allowing Aspergillus to infect living hosts, including plants, insects, birds and mammals. The most common form of aspergillosis in poultry and other birds are respiratory infections. Clinical manifestations depend on the infective dose, pre-existing diseases, and the immune response of the host. The aim of the present manuscript was to study aspergillosis in domestic and wild birds from Argentina. We carried out morphological and molecular identification, and also the determination of susceptibility testing against seven antifungal drugs was conducted. Six birds belonging to different cities of Buenos Aires Province of Argentina were studied. Three of the samples belonged to baby broilers, while the other three samples belonged to an eagle, a pheasant, and a kelp gull. Two isolates were identified as Aspergillus fumigatus by morphological characteristics and growth at 50 ºC. Morphology and BenA sequencing enabled us to identify three isolates as Aspergillus flavus, and one as Aspergillus sydowii. All antifungal drugs tested showed low MIC values, ranging from 0.008 to 1 mg/l. Aspergillosis in birds cause high economical losses and could be controlled by sanitation, avoidance of mouldy food and nest and litter and reducing stress factors.Fil: Della Vedova, Romina. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
