Effects of Urbanization on Terrestrial Isopod Assemblages (Isopoda: Oniscidea): GlobeNet Studies in Hungary and Denmark
A fajok dominancia sorrendjében jelentős eltéréseket tapasztaltunk.
The PhD dissertation contains results on the effects of urbanization on Isopod assemblages of two European towns – Debrecen, Hungary (2002, 2004) and Sorø, Denmark (2004, 2005). Sampling design was based on GlobeNet theory and methodology stating that cities show similarities in their structure. Hence three major areas are distinguished: remnants of native forest outside the city („forest”), a peri-urban residential zone („suburban”) and a dense city core („urban park”).
Total Isopoda capture proved low spedies richness (max. 6 species) while showed great abundances of woodlice in both towns (Debrecen: 2002: 9003 individuals, 2004: 9841; Sorø 2004: 99569, 2005: 30439). Species compositions were very similar among areas. Higher Isopoda abundances were found in urban and suburban areas than the forests.
Great dfferences occurred in species dominance ranks among areas. Cosmopolitans and generalis species (e.g. Porcellio scaber and Trachelipus rathkii) were abundant in the urban park. Forest areas harboured also a considerable amount of isopods more specialized species (e.g. Trachelipus ratzeburgii, Porcellium collicola).
Diversity of isopods was largely biased by abundance of dominant species rather than species richness. Therefore, assemblage structure was greatly uneven in both towns, regardless to the level of urbanization.
Seasonal activity diagrams showed species-specific patterns in each assemblage. This also proves, that seasonal surface activity of dominant species was generally similar in disturbed areas (urban, suburban) compared with the forest populations.
A study on sex ratio showed clear female dominance in each isopod population every year in both towns. Seasonal activity patterns, however, revealed interesting differences between females and males. Male woodlice activity was generally high est in spring- early summer periods while females did not show similar pattern to that. We explain this as a reproduction driven surface activity for the males which decreases after mating, but accelerating female activity at the same time
New and rare species in the isopod fauna of Hungary (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea): results of field surveys and revisions
New and rare isopod species for the Hungarian fauna have been found during the last two years in different regions of Hungary. The following species are new to the Hungarian fauna: Trichoniscus bosniensis, T. crassipes, Cordioniscus stebbingi, Chaetophiloscia cellaria, Agabiformius lentus and Paraschizidium coeculum. New records are given for the following species: Trichoniscus steinboecki, Tachysoniscus austriacus, Buddelundiella cataractae, Lepidoniscus minutus and Platyarthrus schoblii. Re-examination of isopod material held in the Crustacea Collection of the Natural History Museum of Hungary (Haplophthalmus hungaricus, Trichoniscus noricus, T. plitvicensis and Philoscia muscorum) has produced new data for species H. danicus, T. steinboecki, T. austriacus, Porcellium sp. and L. minutus. Philoscia muscorum is formally removed from the Hungarian list
Urban areas as hot-spots for introduced and shelters for native isopod species
Isopod assemblages were studied in Budapest, capital of Hungary.
The analyses of literary and field data revealed a high species
richness (28 species), compared to the total species number (57)
in Hungary. Habitats characteristics for the city were
categorized as native forests, urban forests, gardens of Buda,
gardens of Pest, public parks, densely built-up areas and
botanical gardens. We hypothesized that isolated and diverse
habitat patches in the city matrix of Budapest support the
introduction and establishment of exotic species and the
survival of native ones. The composition of assemblages varied
among sampling sites, but were characteristic for the biotope
categories. We concluded that forests, parks and gardens play an
important role in the survival of native isopod populations.
Species numbers were highest in the gardens of Buda and in the
botanical gardens (both 17 species). The overall presence of
cosmopolitan and disturbance-tolerant species indicates an
ongoing homogenization process.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A budapesti szárazföldi ászkarákfauna (Isopoda: Oniscidea) kvalitatív osztályozása
A Budapesten kimutatott Isopoda fajok vizsgálatának és osztályozásának aktualitását
a városiasodás egyre növekvı mértéke mellett faunisztikai ismereteink hiánya adja. Az adatok győjtéséhez
saját mintáinkat és a fellelhetı irodalmi adatokat is felhasználtuk. Az értékeléshez összesen 100
mintavételi adat állt rendelkezésünkre. Indokoltnak tartottuk a 30 évesnél újabb kelető adatok felhasználását.
A fajokat a
„natív” (ıshonos), a „kozmopolita”, a „meghonosodott betelepedık” és a „nem natív” kategóriákba
soroltuk. Budapest jellegzetességeit figyelembe véve hét fı élıhelytípust határoztunk meg: természetközeli
erdık, városi erdık, közparkok, budai kertek, pesti kertek, sőrőn beépített területek és botanikus
kertek. Ezt a felosztást a fajok, fajeggyüttesek elıfordulásának statisztikai értékelése (SØRENSEN
hasonlósági függvény; klaszteranalízis) igazolta. A fıvárosban legnagyobbrészt kozmopolita (pl.
Armadillidium vulgare) és generalista natív fajok élnek (pl. Trachelipus rathkii, Porcellium collicola),
fajokat is (pl. Haplophthalmus spp.).
erısen urbanizált helyeken is
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Inspection on materials contributing to the knowledge of terrestrial Isopoda (Crustacea, Oniscidea) in Finland
Identifications of 226 terrestrial isopod samplesmostly coming from the unidentified domestic material stored in the Finnish Museum of Natural History, and from our field surveys referred to the following species; Hyloniscus riparius, Trichoniscus pusillus, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio dilatatus, P. spinicornis, P. scaber, Cylisticus convexus, Trachelipus rathkii, Armadillidium opacum, A. pictum, A. pulchellum, A. nasatum, A. vulgare and A. zenckeri. Field populations of A. vulgare and H. riparius were recorded for the first time in Finland, while T. rathkii specimens from Lapua prove that isopods’ distrubution reaches the Finnish inland. We also revisited thematerial donated tomuseum collections by the late Professor E. Palmén and we found old samples of P. dilatatus collected in greenhouses in Helsinki, Salo and Halikko and identified but not published by him. We also discuss the ranges of terrestrial Isopoda in Finland where they live at the northern margins of their distributions
