    Characterization of cenosphere-reinforced vinyl ester composites

    Vinyl ester resin particulate composite plates having varying loading of cenosphere (150 μm) were fabricated using highly polished glass plates as moulds. The addition of cenosphere in the vinyl ester matrix has a significant effect on thermal, mechanical and dielectric properties. From the thermogravimetric analysis of the composites, one can infer that both the thermal degradation mechanism and the rate of thermal degradation are not affected by the incorporation of cenospheres in the vinyl ester resin, which can be credited both to the high thermal stability and the chemical inertness of cenospheres. The high specific strength and the probable uniform distribution of the cenospheres in the cured matrix are found to have an impact on the mechanical properties (tensile strength and flexural modulus) of the composites, with the optimum strength being observed when the loading of cenospheres in the matrix is 2–7% of weight proportion. The inhomogeneity between the cenosphere and the vinyl ester matrix can be related to the variation in the dielectric breakdown strength and dielectric constant of the composite

    This paper deals with the simulation and experimental results of Fixed Capacitor Thyristor switched Reactor Thyristor controlled reactor (FC-TSR-TCR) system. The FC-TSRTCR system is simulated using MATLAB and the simulation results are presented. The power and control circuits are simulated. Laboratory model for the FC-TSR-TCR system is implemented using Atmel microcontroller and it is tested. The current drawn by the FC-TSR-TCR varies with the variation in the firing angle. Stepped variation of current is obtained using thyristor switched reactor. The experimental results are compared with the simulation results

    The idea of E- Theses and Dissertations (ETD) is coming up in International scenario, which can be easily located, readily accessible and delivered over the web. This paper analyzing the opinions of selected Ph D Researchers and Guides from selected Indian Universities on Copyright and IPR issues related to ETDs. On the basis of the output, the paper suggests that Universities can start collecting e-format of theses, creating a digital archive for easy access. But in terms of access, still only a minimum majority is favoring online global access to Indian research.     A library may procure contents in various sources and forms to service their clients. In the predominantly paper based erstwhile environment all these contents were put to similar types of use, and copyright restrictions were imposed based on the quantum of pages copied etc. In the electronic and digital perspective, owners of information are resorting to punitive measures regarding the use and contents in digital form. Some of the constraints faced by our libraries to engage in serious digital initiatives are three fold that of money, manpower and contents. Most of our libraries, particularly in the higher education and research institutes solely depend on the information providers and publishers in the developed world to satisfy their urge for vital contents that inspire indigenous research. Since contents are a major ingredient in digital library development, the pragmatic and viable way out for libraries is to judiciously judge them as available in electronic forms in optical media or on Web and procure at least some of them for hosting locally. This paper presents some of the major issues involved in such a critical activity with some illustrative examples available like IEE/IEEE Electronic Library, Indian Standards on CD-ROM, Science Direct and Web access of Indian Academy of Sciences journals. The justification for selecting external contents has also been mentioned. A detailed checklist for evaluating contents is presented from various angles, like authenticity of content, user interface, search and display capabilities, documentation and technical support, and Media dependent features

    IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells
