More than twenty years ago it was heralded in the Harvard Law Review as the Hart and Wechsler of constitutional law. After decades of solo authorship, Gunther is joined on the 13th edition by Kathleen Sullivan, who was primarily responsible for revising (among other sections) the chapters on freedom of expression. Design in Gunther Kress’ Social Semiotics
Get PDFGunther Kress’s multimodal and social semiotic theory of communication has moved beyond the realm of linguistics, which originally framed his work, and has reached out to inform other fields, such as those of education, museum studies, as well as the humanities and social sciences more broadly. This article brings together our insights in relation to a concept from Gunther Kress’s theory, that of design. Drawing from our research, we reflect on Kress’s conceptualisation of design in social semiotics and discuss how this idea has inspired us to advance research across the domains of formal learning in schools, informal learning and communication in museums, and in everyday communication and social interaction. We consider that the contribution of design is to challenge the boundaries of concepts such as ‘competence’, ‘interpretation’ and ‘critique’, associated respectively with the dominant discourses and practices in the worlds of education, museums and everyday communication and research practice. We look at design as: (1) learning; (2) transformation of resources; and (3) an engaged and engaging social semiotic research, and argue that as an interpretative resource it enables us to move beyond the limitations posed by institutions such as schools, museums and academia

Gunther rendered the Equal Protection Act\u27s equal work requirement inapplicable to claims of gender discrimination in compensation brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. It is possible that Gunther will be invoked as a basis for applying the controversial theory of comparable worth to such claims. The author argues, however, that the Supreme Court\u27s rationale in Gunther precludes a comparable worth theory. He then examines alternative possible means of establishing post-Gunther claims under Title VII in terms of that rationale
Distant(ly) reading Alexander Kluge's distant writing
No full textIn this article, I investigate whether Alexander Kluge's works displays an increase in references to “real” places, people and locations and whether this helps us to arrive at an assessment of the typical “Kluge sound”. I do so by means of a novel methodological approach: I subject Kluge’s texts to a distant reading by means of tools borrowed from the budding field of Digital Humanities. It is not my aim to question existing non-quantitative approaches. But I will enumerate a number of reasons why an author like Alexander Kluge is specifically amenable to such an approach. By means of distant reading, we can better come to grips with an oeuvre running into the thousands of pages and notable for its sheer diversity. In addition, it is shown that Kluge’s writing can be termed ‘distant’ not only because of its documentary poetics but also because it covers a lot of distance, even within the marked brevity of its short stories
The role and effectiveness of e-learning: key issues in an industrial context
No full textThis paper identifies the current role and effectiveness of e-learning and its key issues in an industrial context. The first objective is to identify the role of e-learning, particularly in staff training and executive education, where e-learning (online, computer-based or videoconferencing learning) has made significant impacts and contributions to several organisations such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Cisco and Cap Gemini Earnst Young. With e-learning, staff training and executive education provides more benefits and better efficiency than traditional means. The second objective of this research is to understand the effectiveness of e-learning. This can be classified into two key issues: (1) methods of e-learning implementations; and (2) factors influencing effective and ineffective e-learning implementations. One learning point from (1) is that centralized e-learning implementations may prevail for big organizations. How-ever, more organizations adopt decentralized e-learning implementations due to various reasons, which will be discussed in this paper. From the research results, a proposed way is to retain the decentralized way. The second learning point is about interactive learning (IL), the combination of both e-learning and face-to-face learning. IL has been making contributions to several organizations, including the increase in motivation, learning interests and also efficiency. The popular issues about IL are (a) how to minimize the disadvantages of IL and (b) the degree of interactivity for maximizing learning efficiency. One learning point from (2) is to analyze the factors influencing effective and ineffective implementations, which reflect the different focuses between industrialists and academics. In terms of effective e-learning implementations, factors identified by both groups can map to particular cases in industry. In contrast, factors causing ineffective implementations rely more on primary source data. In order to find out these factors and analyze the rationale behind, case studies and interviews were used as research methodology that matched the objective of the research
Signos da pandemia: multimodalidade, semiótica social e comunicação a partir do pensamento de Gunther Kress
Get PDFIn this article, we reflect on some impacts of the pandemic on interactions and communication drawing from Gunther Kress' multimodal and sociosemiotic thinking. To do so, we relate examples with fundamental concepts of Social Semiotics, such as identity, power, motivated sign and interest. In addition, we propose a small tribute to this author who greatly influenced us. We trace a brief history of his academic career in which we highlight some of his main publications and discuss concepts and ideas developed by him throughout his career.

En este artículo, reflexionamos sobre algunos impactos de la pandemia en las interacciones y la comunicación a partir del pensamiento multimodal y socio-semiótico de Gunther Kress, relacionando ejemplos con conceptos fundamentales de la Semiótica Social, como identidad, poder, signo motivado e interés. Además, te proponemos un pequeño homenaje a este autor que tanto nos influyó. Para ello, trazamos una breve historia de su carrera académica, destacando algunas de sus principales publicaciones y discutiendo conceptos e ideas desarrolladas por él a lo largo de su carrera.

Além disso, propomos uma pequena homenagem a este autor que tanto nos influenciou. Para tanto, traçamos um breve histórico da sua carreira acadêmica, destacando algumas de suas principais publicações e discutindo conceitos e ideias desenvolvidas por ele ao longo de sua trajetória.
