Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Tutkimus tulevaisuuden muutoksista laivansuunnitteluprosessissa
Future planning is an important aspect of decision making, since it enables organizations to clarify their future priorities, improve risk awareness and recognize opportunities. Presently, many ship design companies are contemplating decisions, such as transitioning from the conservative 2D based ship design process to the more modern 3D based ship design. Until recently, 3D modelling tools have been generally considered as slow and constrained. However, recent developments in 3D CAD programs and other innovations have shown much improvements in the overall benefits. The design companies must therefore determine whether to adopt these innovations.
The objective of this study was to determine how the ship design process can be expected to change within the next decade. The study was carried out by using the Delphi Method. Discipline members at Aker Arctic Technologies were interviewed about the present needs in the design process, based on which various existing innovations were reviewed prior to the Delphi-study. The Delphi experts then evaluated the suitability of these technologies to the design process, and also the 5-year and 10-year forecasts were created as a part of the study.
The results suggested that highly impactful changes are not expected in the design process within the next 10 years. However, the results did suggest why certain innovations are easier to adopt, and why ship designers generally preferred reliability over novelty regarding the design tools.Tulevaisuuden suunnittelu on tärkeä osa päätöksentekoa, sillä se mahdollistaa organisaatioille tulevaisuuden painopisteiden selventämisen, riskitietoisuuden parantamisen ja mahdollisuuksien tunnistamisen. Tällä hetkellä monet laivansuunnitteluyritykset harkitsevat erilaisia päätöksiä, kuten siirtymistä konservatiivisesta 2D-pohjaisesta alusten suunnitteluprosessista nykyaikaisempaan 3D-pohjaiseen alusten suunnitteluun. Aiempina vuosina 3D-mallinnustyökaluja on yleisesti pidetty hitaina ja liian jäykkinä verrattuna 2D-suunnitteluun. 3D CAD-ohjelmien ja muiden innovaatioiden viimeaikainen kehitys on kuitenkin osoittanut paljon parannuksia, joten yrityisten on siis päätettävä kuinka hyvin innovaatiot sopii heidän suunnitteluprosessiin.
robotiikan turvallisuus.
Robottisolusta tehtiin kaksi layoutvaihtoehtoa, joita vertailemalla valittiin parempi
vaihtoehto. Tarraimeksi valittiin alipainetarrain, jonka suunnittelu jätettiin ulkopuoliselle
yritykselle. Robotin valinta suoritettiin saatavilla olevien robottien ominaisuuksia
ja liikerataa tutkimalla.
Opinnäytetyön tuloksena saatiin kaksi layoutvaihtoehtoa, joista toinen valittiin hyö-
tyarvomatriisin avulla. Tarraimeksi valittiin alipainetarrain Lineartec Oy:lta. Tehtä-
vässä käytettävä robotti valittiin kolmesta vaihtoehdosta. Näistä suunnitelmista
Ruukki voi halutessaan toteuttaa robottisolun. The main goal for the thesis was to design a working robot cell plan for Ruukki’s unit in Vimpeli. The main points of the thesis were a layout design and choosing
the right robot model and gripper for the application.
The layout design was made with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD software. The theory part of the thesis included information about robotics, grippers and layout designing.
The end results of the thesis were a suction gripper design which was chosen in cooperation with Lineartec OY and a layout design which was chosen from two different options. The robot for the application was also chosen from three different models
Determinants of Carbon Pricing Policy Stringency
Päästöjen hinnoittelu on kustannustehokas keino ilmastonmuutoksen hillintään.
Aiempi tutkimus on hyödyntänyt ainoastaan suoraan päästöjen hinnoitteluun liittyvää dataa.
Carbon pricing is a cost-effective instrument of climate change mitigation policy. Its implementation is, however, limited by various political constraints. The goal of this thesis is to examine what factors empirically explain cross-country variation in carbon pricing policy. Understanding the political constraints limiting carbon pricing may have implications for policy design.
Previous literature on the empirical determinants of carbon pricing policy has focused mostly on determinants based on political economy theory, such as variation in domestic interests, and been conducted with data only on explicit carbon pricing. Implicit carbon prices created by fuel excise taxes are, however, a significant part of the total price on emissions. This thesis contributes to existing literature by introducing two new determinants in public finance considerations and country-level social cost of carbon as well as utilizing broader carbon pricing data. Empirical methods used include regression based on maximum-likelihood estimation of censored data and multiple linear regression.
The size of the public sector is found to have a statistically significant positive association with carbon pricing regardless of the model used. This supports the hypothesis that cross-country variation in carbon pricing is empirically explained by a need to finance public spending and by the double-dividend hypothesis. Other factors that are found to have a clear positive association with carbon pricing are level of democracy, administrative capacity, and GDP per capita. The results are somewhat mixed concerning the effect of other political institutions related factors as well as factors related to carbon intensity. The hypothesis that country-level social cost of carbon positively affects carbon pricing is clearly rebuked which suggests that a competitive game does not describe national-level policymakers’ decision-making. The results of the thesis should not, however, be interpreted as causal because of omitted variable bias, reverse causality, and a lack of time-series data
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
