Cesare Arzelà e l'insegnamento della matematica

    No full text
My purpose is to discuss the contributions of Cesare Arzelà to pedagogy in the context of the effort to establish a national system of education in the reunited Italy of the late nineteenth century. After a short biography, I give a sequential discussion of the contents of Treatise on elementary algebra for high-school students [(Italian), Monnier, Firenze, 1880]. Two other treatises of Arzelà [C. Arzelà and G. Ingrami, Rational arithmetic for secondary schools (Italian), Zanichelli, Bologna, 1894 C. Arzelà, Lectures on infinitesimal calculus given at the Royal University of Bologna (Italian), Monnier, Firenze, 1901] are also discussed

[a cura dell'Autore]The purpose of this study was the complete and detailed description of all the materials (parchments manuscripts, documents and fragments), dated between the 12th and the 13th centuries, through census and cataloging of the historical records preserved at the Biblioteca Nazionale at the Montevergine Abbey and at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. An important chapter in the history of the Abbey concerns the book decoration, a little studied subject, unlike the pictorial and sculptural productions. The global analysis (codicological, paleographical, textual and of the history of art), combined with the analysis of the archive materials and the indirect records, has allowed us to rebuild a corpus of the decorative codes linked to the Montevergine Abbey, as well as to propose new critical acquisitions. Searching for parchment images has led us to wonder about the presence of the scriptorium; a complex reality in the Virginian world that does not fully attest to the production of books. The analysis of illustrated documents known as ‘Statuto dell’abate Donato', a sure Virginian production, was of great interest and led to a new interpretation. [edited by Author]XV n.s

From Public to Private: Privatization in 1920's Fascist Italy

    No full text
Italy’s first Fascist government applied a large-scale privatization policy between 1922 and 1925. The government privatized the state monopoly of match sale, eliminated the State monopoly on life insurances, sold most of the State-owned telephone networks and services to private firms, reprivatized the largest metal machinery producer, and awarded concessions to private firms to build and operate motorways. While ideological considerations may have had a certain influence, privatization was used mainly as a political tool to build confidence among industrialists and to increase support for the government and the Partito Nazionale Fascista. Privatization also contributed to balancing the budget, which was the core objective of Fascist economic policy in its first phase.Privatization,Public Enterprise,Government,Fascist Economy,Italy

Telling the Story: An Interactive Multimedia Exhibit Narrating the 900 Years of the Alma Mater

In this paper we present the steps that led from the conceptualization to the implementation of an interactive multimedia storytelling system that narrates the history of the Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna. The aim of this work has been that of providing the Bologna City Museum (based in the Pepoli Palace and run by Genus Bononiae) with a system that describes the almost millenary history of the University of Bologna. In fact, the history of the Alma Mater was incredibly missing inside this Museum. Hence a small, but heterogeneous group of professionals, which includes historians, computer scientists, artists, art directors, 3D animators and academics, undertook this complex task, considering the important background of the institution, which boasts a history that includes the affiliation of characters that range from Dante Alighieri (the author of the Divine Comedy) to Giosue' Carducci (the first Italian Nobel prize laureate for literature). The outcome of this work is that the Alma Mater has regained the center of the stage, inside the main city museum of Bologna, with the use of modern digital storytelling techniques and following rigorous aesthetic principles, all put to good use to finally let visitors easily browse through the highest historical moments of such institutio

Antimicrobial resistance trends in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis urinary isolates from Switzerland: retrospective analysis of data from a national surveillance network over an 8-year period (2009-2016).

OBJECTIVES: Most urinary tract infections (UTIs) are treated empirically with antibiotics, making comprehensive resistance surveillance data essential to guide empiric regimens. We describe trends in the antibiotic resistance of urinary Enterobacteriaceae isolates in Switzerland between 2009 and 2016. METHODS: We analysed data from routinely collected Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis urinary samples from community and hospital settings in Switzerland. The data were collected by ANRESIS, the national laboratory-based antimicrobial resistance surveillance system. Our analyses focused on resistance to antibiotics commonly prescribed for UTIs for the period 2009–2016. Only the first isolate per patient per year was included. RESULTS: 297,200 urinary samples were included in the analysis, of which 246,656 (83.0%) were E. coli isolates. Overall, E. coli showed high susceptibility to 3rd/4th-generation cephalosporins, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin, with the annual proportions of resistant isolates <6%, <5% and <2%, respectively, for all study years. Resistance to fluoroquinolones was >14% and increased over time (from 14.5% in 2009 to 19.3% in 2016). Resistance to cotrimoxazole was >20% for the whole study period. K. pneumoniae (n = 32,757; 11.0%) showed low resistance to cotrimoxazole and quinolones (<11% and <12%, respectively), while for P. mirabilis (n = 17,787; 6.0%) the proportion of resistant isolates was <35% for cotrimoxazole and <18% for quinolones. Even though quinolone resistance remained low for both pathogens (<12% for K. pneumoniae and <18% for P. mirabilis), it increased significantly over time. Proportions of isolates resistant to 3rd/4th generation cephalosporins remained low (<5% for K. pneumoniae and <2% for P. mirabilis), but in the case of K. pneumoniae they increased over time. CONCLUSIONS: Swiss surveillance data confirm that resistance among uropathogenic E. coli isolates to nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin remains low. While resistance to 3rd/4th-generation cephalosporins also remains relatively low, it has been increasing and needs further surveillance. As for K. pneumoniae and P. mirabilis, high levels of susceptibility to 3rd-generation cephalosporins and quinolones were confirmed, while high prevalences of resistance to nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin discourage their use as first-line therapies for these pathogens
