Nin Andrews’ poems and stories have appeared in many literary journals and anthologies, including Ploughshares, Best American Poetry (1997, 2001, 2003), and Great American Prose Poems. She is the author of several books, including Why God Is a Woman (BOA, 2015); Southern Comfort (CavanKerry Press, 2009), Dear Professor, Do You Live in a Vacuum? (Subito Press, 2008), Sleeping with Houdini (BOA Editions Ltd., 2008), Midlife Crisis with Dick and Jane (Web Del Sol, 2005), and The Book of Orgasms (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2000).“There is no other young writer—at least on these shores—whose work even remotely resembles that of Nin Andrews. To find her predecessor one has to look to Europe, to the sly and sometimes erotic zaniness of Luis Bunuel. Nin Andrews’ The Book of Orgasms is hilariously Swiftian and eerily surrealist by turns. Talents as original as hers are rare—and are exceedingly welcome.” –David Wojohn “What a swell first book this is—sexy, audacious, funny, inventive. Nin Andrews has a deft comic touch that enhances her lyricism. Her commitment to pleasure is a salutary reminder that amusement contains muse. Read this book in bed. I’ m sure it will be as good for you as it was for me.” –David Lehman More Information: Nin Andrews Website Gently Read Literaturehttps://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/clpc_bks/1002/thumbnail.jp

    No full text
Anaïs Nin, French-Cuban author famous for her 35,000 page diary that has been published in both expurgated and unexpurgated forms, is also the author of several volumes of erotic literature. Nin\u27s Diary and volumes of erotica changed the face of women\u27s literature and erotica by providing the first authentic erotic feminine voice. Examining both the content and the response to said material provides an understanding as to how Nin\u27s works changed what it means to be a woman author and a writer of erotic literature

    Jakob Andreae'nin vaazlarında Türk imgesi

Jakob Andreae'nin Vaazlarında Türk İmgesi adlı çalışmada, Protestan teolog Jakob Andreae'nin 1568 yılında yayımladığı Türkler Hakkında On Üç Vaaz adlı eseri Türk imgesi bağlamında incelenmiştir. Yazar söz konusu eserinde aynı yıl verdiği on üç Türk vaazını bir araya getirmiştir. In the study titled Turkish Image in the Sermons of Jakob Andreae, the Protestant theologian Jakob Andreae's Thirteen Sermons on the Turks, published in 1568, was examined in the context of the Turkish image. In his work, the author brought together thirteen Turkish sermons he gave in the same year. In addition to the study of the work, the Turkish image and Turkish sermons were also discussed in the study, and a comprehensive biography of Andreae was also included. As a result of the examination of the work, it was found that the author produced an anti-Turkish propaganda work. Reiterating the same negative concepts about Turks in his sermons, Andreae aimed to place Turks as tyrants, despots and enemies in the perception of society. The author also wanted to make the Christian community repent, stating that the Turks were sent as the punishment of God. The author, who used the Turks as a weapon in his struggle against the Catholic Church, showed the idolatry of the Catholic Church and the sins of the Christian community among the reasons why the Turks were sent as punishment. Andreae also warned the society that they should not be fooled by the positive aspects of the Turks, and thus wanted to prevent them from being sympathetic to the religion and administration of the Turks. In his views on Turks, the author generally did not deviate from the dominant Lutheran discourse of his time and tried to spread this discourse with his work

An Introduction to Joaquin Nin (1879-1949) and His Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles .

    No full text
Joaquin Nin was a leading figure in the renaissance of Spanish music in the early part of the twentieth century. A virtuoso concert pianist, he championed the music of little-known 17th and 18 th century Spanish composers, performing their works alongside Bach, Couperin, and Liszt. Nin\u27s editions of ancient Spanish music and his arrangements of popular songs and dances brought a body of virtually unknown repertoire---the exotic music of the Iberian Peninsula---to a broader public. The purpose of this paper is to better acquaint the reader with Joaquin Nin and his first compositions, Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles . Although Nin is cited in several reference volumes, there has been very little research dedicated solely to his contributions. The author attempts to piece together the disparate information available, thereby providing a springboard for others interested in further study. Chapter One is a brief biographical sketch of Nin based largely on his own writings and on facts gathered from his son, Joaquin Nin-Culmell. Chapter Two surveys his solo vocal music, discusses the Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles , and considers eight representative songs from that collection performed on the lecture/recital. The appendix includes EPA transcriptions of Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles and a listing of the songs included in Nin\u27s vocal collections. In the Veinte Cantos Populares Espanoles, Nin crafted accompaniments that not only complement the melodies, but also allow the spirit of the folksong to radiate. Cultivating his individual expression by utilizing elements from both the Hispanic and impressionistic idioms while drawing from his innate sense of style and artistry and his extensive training as a pianist, Nin contributed artsongs of lasting value to the Spanish repertoire. It is the hope of the author that this short document and lecture/recital will encourage others to pursue the study of these and other songs by Joaquin Nin and enable the song connoisseur to appreciate his unique role in the history of Spanish song

The influence of physical processes on extratropical singular vectors

    No full text
An investigation is made of the impact of a full linearized physical (moist) parameterization package on extratropical singular vectors (SVs) using the ECMWF integrated forecasting system (IFS). Comparison is made for one particular period with a dry physical package including only vertical diffusion and surface drag. The crucial extra ingredient in the full package is found to be the large-scale latent heat release. Consistent with basic theory, its inclusion results in a shift to smaller horizontal scales and enhanced growth for the SVs. Whereas, for the dry SVs, T42 resolution is sufficient, the moist SVs require T63 to resolve their structure and growth. A 24-h optimization time appears to be appropriate for the moist SVs because of the larger growth of moist SVs compared with dry SVs. Like dry SVs, moist SVs tend to occur in regions of high baroclinicity, but their location is also influenced by the availability of moisture. The most rapidly growing SVs appear to enhance or reduce large-scale rain in regions ahead of major cold fronts. The enhancement occurs in and ahead of a cyclonic perturbation and the reduction in and ahead of an anticyclonic perturbation. Most of the moist SVs for this situation are slightly modified versions of the dry SVs. However, some occur in new locations and have particularly confined structures. The most rapidly growing SV is shown to exhibit quite linear behavior in the nonlinear model as it grows from 0.5 to 12 hPa in 1 day. For 5 times this amplitude the structure is similar but the growth is about half as the perturbation damps a potential vorticity (PV) trough or produces a cutoff, depending on its sign

Perceptions of the Croatian Democratic Union in the Belgrade weekly Nin during 1990

    No full text
The author analyzes perceptions of the Croatian Democratic Union in the Belgrade-based weekly newsmagazine NIN during the course of 1990. The media in Serbia played a major role in preparing the mood leading up to the Serbian aggression against Croatia in 1991. NIN, as one of the most influential publications on the Yugoslav media scene, was no exception, so its activities during 1990 are relevant

The 1817 List of the Noblemen of Nin

In the article, the author discusses the list of the noblemen of the city of Nin compilled and authenticated in 1817 by communal administration of Nin and submitted, together with additional documentation, to the Heraldic commission of the Second Austrian government of Dalmatia in order to obtain confirmation of nobility for members of families which were aggregated to the Noble council of the Commune of Nin from 1656 to 1804. In spite of the attempt of the local elite to prove that the Noble council of Nin was equal in its prerogatives to other estate corporations of nobility in Dalmatia during Venetian and First Austrian government of Dalmatia, this action did not reach a favourable end, since the Vienna Court took firm stand that belonging to the Noble council of Nin and consequently nobility of Nin is not accepted as nobility within the borders of Austrian Empire, as was allowed to the nobility of the cities of Zadar, Trogir, Split, Kotor and the nobility of former Republic of Dubrovnik. Confirmation of nobility of Nin was requested for 52 noble families, whose members were listed by their names in the attached list. In order to gain more comprehensive insight into the history of the nobility of Nin, each family is particularly discussed regarding its origin, its belonging to the Noble council of Nin and its social role in the city. After the request for confirmation of nobility was declined by Austrian government, the nobility of Nin lost its importance and raison d’être and fell into historical oblivion

In this thesis, we examine the sociological analysis of the French translation of Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin. We attempt to underline the social trajectory ( habitus ) of the translator, Béatrice Commengé and of the author. We analyze how the author. Anaïs Nin is situated with regard to the American erotic tradition and especially how the translation is situated with regard to the French tradition. We use Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory to determine the structural factors at the core of the translated text. We start from the hypothesis that this theory is based on the structure and the history of the field, the habitus of the agents (in particular the translators) and the illusio of a genre of text, the erotic text. Pierre Bourdieu's method will allow us to understand various features of the social reality of the literary field in the field of power, the structure of the literary field and the formation of the habitus of the author and the translator

THOMAS NEKIĆ, BISHOP OF NIN (1743 – 1754)

    No full text
Author of this article investigates service of bishop Thomas Nekić in the Diocese of Nin (1734 – 1754) on the basis of the archival sources from the Bishopric of Nin and other historiographical records. Life and opus of bishop Thomas Nekić coincide with the period when the Diocese of Nin experienced rough and difficult circumstances regarding faith and its material status equally. Namely, author emphasizes rising influence of new-coming Orthodox population and clergy to the Catholic population in the realm of the Bishopric of Nin. Although Orthodox clergy and believers were de jure under jurisdiction of a Latin bishop, de facto they opposed him and disputed his authority. Because of such situation bishop Thomas Nekić had serious problems in his pastoral work, and from other preserved documents it is quite visible that similar situation troubled bishops also in other dioceses in Dalmatia during the second half of the eighteenth century. Moreover, it seems that this question was one of the most important issues at that time, since activities of archbishops Vicko Zmajević and Mate Karaman witness that they devoted a great effort in suppression of spreading of the Orthodoxy, and their example and deeds were kind of inspiration for Thomas Nekić in his pastoral work. Besides fighting the Orthodoxy, bishop Thomas Nekić’s pastoral work was generally devoted to renewal of material and spiritual heritage in the Diocese of Nin. Moreover, he maintained welfare and education of local clergy and canons, and persisted on encouragement of local clergy to more ardent spiritual work among believers. Although his service at the position of the bishop of Nin did not last long, Thomas Nekić was committed shepherd whose life and deeds are worthy of further investigation
