Kiran Verma oral history interview and transcript
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.Chef Kiran Verma was born on September 11, 1954 in Jharsuguda, India and grew up in Delhi with her parents and older siblings. Her father worked in civil aviation, and her mother was a professor of Hindi. Verma attended college for two years before getting married and moving to Houston, where she worked as a bank teller for several years before opening a barbecue restaurant. After her children went to college, she began to work at a restaurant called Ashiana’s, of which she later became the chef and owner. In 2005, Verma opened Kiran’s, a renowned Indian fine dining restaurant now located in Upper Kirby
Mosaic Atlas: Interview with Arjun Verma
This interview with Arjun Verma, an Indian-American sitar artist and composer based in the Bay Area, was conducted by Sukanya Chakrabarti as part of the Mosaic Atlas project. Arjun Verma combines traditional and contemporary approaches to Indian classical music. Deeply rooted in Hindustani classical music, yoga, and Vedanta, Verma views music as a holistic expression of life and a medium for conveying emotions beyond words. He aims to preserve the classical tradition\u27s essence while innovating within its framework, offering audiences profound and transformative experiences. As a steward of this living art form, Verma highlights challenges such as limited platforms and resources for sharing Indian classical music, which is often marginalized. He envisions a future where global artistic traditions are integrated into mainstream education, fostering greater accessibility and appreciation. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area
Surveying Child Labour Through Households: Sampling Issues and Strategies
This paper addresses sampling issues arising in the context of household-based child labour surveys. It presents some of the sampling strategies elaborated in the ILO book Sampling for Household-based Surveys of Child Labour (Verma, 2008). A typology of surveys of child labour is identified, and the fundamental distinction between two types with very different objectives - termed 'child labour surveys' and 'labouring children surveys', respectively - is clarified and emphasised. Following a broad survey of national practices in conducting surveys of child labour, linkages between different types of surveys and some specific sampling techniques are explained

On multiplicities of simple subquotients in generalized Verma modules
summary:We reduce the problem on multiplicities of simple subquotients in an -stratified generalized Verma module to the analogous problem for classical Verma modules
Graded extensions of Verma modules
In this paper, we investigate extensions between graded Verma modules in the BGG category . In particular, we determine exactly which information about extensions between graded Verma modules is given by the coefficients of the -polynomials. We also give some upper bounds for the dimensions of graded extensions between Verma modules in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig combinatorics. We completely determine all extensions between Verma module in the regular block of category for and construct various ``unexpected\u27\u27 higher extensions between Verma modules.3 figures; color help
