    The assessment of shielding and anti-shielding effects on crack growth in multi-layered architectures is achieved using elasto-plastic finite element models. Initially, the evolution of straight, deflected and bifurcated cracks is studied through two-dimensional models with blunted crack tips using the maximum tangential strain as a criterion for deflection and the crack opening displacement as the crack driving force.     Fatigue crack shielding in plain bearings under large scale yielding

    Multi-layered bearing systems used in the automotive industry show shielding and antishielding effects that reduce or amplify the crack driving force under large-scale yielding conditions. Using finite element analysis, it is shown that shielding in such systems results in path deflection and bifurcation despite the absence of mixed-mode loading. As the crack approaches a stiff layer, the tangential strains measured around a blunted crack tip model show a maximum corresponding to the direction of crack propagation. The distribution of such strains indicates the effect of shielding and the likelihood of the tip to deflect or bifurcate.The suitability of bi-layer and tri-layer bearing architectures is assessed through crack path and respective crack driving force prediction

    This research was conducted at the El Empalme Canton, Guayas Province, where much of its total population is grouped. It is located 167 km. Guayaquil and 21 km from Quevedo, its cantonal head is the city of Velasco Ibarra, with an altitude between 27 m and 115 m. The overall objective was to "determine the acceptability of transition from conventional to organic banana as an alternative to the financial recovery of the small producer in Canton Junction". Specific objectives "Analyzing the transition from conventional bananas in organic systems", "Assessing the social situation Canton producer Empalme" and "compare the work used in conventional farming to organic banana". For research 34 producers of Canton Junction engaged in planting conventional bananas and showed interest in the transition to organic, for which a questionnaire with 12 closed questions (survey) was developed is considered with which managed to gather the information necessary and sufficient to analyze the transition process, the social effect, the producers in the area. An analysis of the results it was concluded that 82% of banana farmers in the Canton Junction possess some knowledge of organic farming and know the advantages that this has also the highest percentage of small producers have units banana production ranging from 11 15 hectares and 32% who are between 6 and 10 hectares, which facilitates the transition and that 91% of farmers consider feasible the transition from conventional to organic by several factors, especially the use of traditional practices and not chemical application, considering also other elements that enables the transition as environmental protection, human health and demand in international markets; In addition farmers in more than 90% believe that organic bananas improve their income according to the trend of market growth for organic bananas as some studies claim and including FAO.La presente investigación se realizó en el Cantón El Empalme, Provincia del Guayas, lugar donde se agrupa gran parte de su población total. Se encuentra a 167 km. de Guayaquil y a 21 km de Quevedo, su cabecera cantonal es la Ciudad de Velasco Ibarra, con una altitud entre 27 msnm y 115 msnm. Elobjetivo general fue “Determinar la aceptabilidad de transición de bananeras convencional a orgánica como alternativa para la recuperación financiera del pequeño productor en el cantón el empalme”. Objetivos específicos “Analizar la transición del banano en los sistemas convencional a orgánico”, “Evaluar la situación social del productor del Cantón el Empalme” y “Comparar las labores empleadas en el cultivo de banano convencional a orgánico”. Para la investigación se consideró 34 productores del Cantón empalme que se dedican a la siembra del banano convencional y mostraron interés por la transición a orgánico, para lo cual se elaboró un cuestionario de 12 preguntas cerradas (encuesta) con las que se logró recabar la información necesaria y suficiente para analizar los procesos de transición, el efecto social, en los productores de la zona. Del análisis de los resultados se concluyó que el 82% de los agricultores bananeros del Cantón el empalme poseen cierto conocimiento de agricultura orgánica y conocer las ventajas que esta presenta, además que el mayor porcentaje de pequeños productores poseen unidades de producción bananera que oscilan entre 11 a 15 has y un 32% que tienen entre 6 y 10 has, lo que facilita la transición y que el 91% de los agricultores consideran viable la transición de convencional a orgánico por diversos factores, especialmente por el empleo de prácticas tradicionales y la no aplicación de químicos, considerando también otros elementos que viabiliza la transición como la protección al ambiente, la salud humana y la demanda en los mercados internacionales; Además los agricultores en más del 90% consideran que el banano orgánico mejoraría sus ingresos económicos acorde a la tendencia de crecimiento del mercado para banano orgánico según lo sostienen algunos estudios y entre ellos de la FAO

    Risk-averse strategic participation of prosumers coalition in local community markets

    Local energy communities emerge as a valuable framework to optimally leverage local assets installed by prosumers. In this context, local markets launched within communities may boost the active participation of end-users, paving the way to improve the economy and energy efficiency of distribution systems. This paper proposes a new model for strategic participation of prosumers in local markets. The new proposal contributes with two main novelties. Firstly, the model considers the participation of prosumers coalition rather than individual participation. Secondly, a risk-averse resolution mechanism is developed, considering different uncertainty modelling for community and coalition-level uncertainties. Thus, whereas stochastic programming is considered for community-level uncertainties, robust optimization leverages better estimation of the coalition-level uncertainties. The optimization model casts as bi-level framework, which is further converted into a tractable single-level model. Some simulations are presented on a benchmark 15-bus community, involving eight prosumers, with three of them forming a coalition. Results show that coalition-level uncertainties impact further the economy of the coalition, incrementing the expected expenditures by 31 % versus 3.1 %. Moreover, the importance of flexibility provided by storage systems and controllable appliances is illustrated and discussed. In particular, neglecting storage capability increments expenditures by 30 % while flexible appliances contribute to reduce the coalition cost by 8.7 %. Further sensitivity analyses are performed regarding local demand and photovoltaic generation, as well as confidence interval and coalition sizes, showing that the developed approach performs well in a wide variety of scenarios

    Role of ofatumumab in treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

    Marays Veliz, Javier Pinilla-IbarzH Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Tampa, FL, USAAbstract: The management of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has dramatically improved in the past decade with the addition of anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies to the treatment armamentarium. Ofatumumab is a novel anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody recently approved in the US and Europe for the treatment of CLL refractory to alemtuzumab and fludarabine. Preclinical data showed improved complement-dependent cytotoxicity and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity compared with rituximab. Clinical studies have shown single-agent activity for ofatumumab in CLL and in other low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Combination studies are being conducted to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of ofatumumab.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Elucidating the processes responsible for maintaining the population connectivity of marine benthic species mediated by larval dispersal remains a fundamental question in marine ecology and fishery management. Understanding these processes becomes particularly important in areas with a biogeographical break and primarily unidirectional water movement along the sides of the break. Based on single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variability, we determine the population genetic structure, temporal genetic stability, and gene flow among populations of the commercially important crab Metacarcinus edwardsii in a system in southern Chile with a biogeographical break at 42°S. Specimens were collected from eight localities along its geographical distribution, and collection from four of these sites was performed twice. The population genomic approach, assessed with 4,209 SNPs and 234 samples, showed null population differentiation in both the geographical and temporal dimensions. No evidence of effects from the biogeographic break and the northward Humboldt current was detected in gene flow. Migration analyses showed gene flow among all sites but different proportion between pairs of sites. Overall, this research suggests that M. edwardsii comprises a single large population with high gene flow between sites separated by more than 1700 km and demonstrating temporal stability of the population genetic structure
