    Tracing the building of Robert's connections in mathematical problem solving: a sixteen-year study

    This research analyzes how external representations created by a student, Robert, helped him in building mathematical understanding over a sixteen-year period. Robert (also known as Bobby), was an original participant of the Rutgers longitudinal study where students were encouraged to work on problem-solving tasks with minimum intervention (Maher, 2005). The research demonstrates how Robert built robust counting techniques by tracing the evolvement of his problem-solving heuristics, strategies, justifications and external representations. The study also examines how Robert made connections to his earlier problem solving. In addition, the origins of Robert’s ideas related to Pascal’s Triangle and Pascal’s Pyramid are investigated. Fifteen sessions were selected between Robert’s fifth grade (February 26, 1993) and post-graduate interviews (March 27, 2009) yielding more than twenty hours of video data. Powell, Francisco, and Maher (2003) model was used for analysis where by each session was viewed, transcribed and coded for critical events to create a comprehensive narrative. The study reveals that mature combinatorial techniques were a part of Robert’s counting strategies as early as middle school. Robert used binary notation to count two-colored candle arrangements and later to count the number of ways a team could win a World Series; modified exponential formulae to account for combinations for a garage door opener, arrangements for n-colored candles and n-toppings pizzas; discovered the combinations formula, C(n, 2), in his eleventh grade; and connected these solutions to Pascal’s identities. In general, Robert looked for patterns in his solutions; generalized the findings; and identified structural similarities in tasks presented to him as he connected three-position garage door opener to three-colored candles arrangements, pizza with four toppings to towers four high, and directions on Pascal’s Triangle to routes for a taxi on a two-dimensional grid. External representations created by Robert served as communication tools for him and provided insight into his problem solving heuristics and mathematical understanding.     The Birth Defects Registry of India-Chennai (BDRI-C) was created in 2001 to monitor birth defects and provide timely referrals. Using established guidelines to evaluate surveillance systems, we examined the following attributes of BDRI-C to help strengthen the registry: simplicity, flexibility, data quality, representativeness, acceptability, timeliness, and stability. We reviewed BDRI-C documents, including reporting forms; interviewed key informants; and calculated data completeness, coverage, and reporting time. BDRI-C captured 14% of the births in Chennai April 2013 - March 2014. About 7% of institutions in Chennai registered in BDRI-C, and of those registered, 37% provided data in 2013. Median reporting time was 44 days after birth in 2013. BDRI-C is a useful, simple, flexible, and timely passive birth defects surveillance system; however, improvements can be made to ensure BDRI-C is representative of Chennai, data processing and quality checks are on-going, and the system is acceptable for member institutions and stable.CC999999/ImCDC/Intramural CDC HHSUnited States

    In July 2015, we investigated a foodborne illness outbreak in Sithalikuppam and Verupachi villages, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, among the political rally attendees to determine the risk factors for illness. We conducted a retrospective cohort study, calculated risk ratio for the food exposures, and cultured stool specimens. Of 55 rally attendees, we identified 36 (65%) case patients; 32 (89%) had diarrhea and 20 (56%) had vomiting. Median incubation period was 14 h. Eighty-nine percent (32/36) of those who ate lemon rice at dinner had illness compared to 21% (4/19) of those who did not (RR 4.2). Of the six nonattendees who ate leftovers on July 25, all ate only lemon rice and became ill. Stool cultures were negative for Salmonella, Shigella, and Vibrio species. Lemon rice was probably contaminated with enterotoxins such as from Bacillus cereus.     Violence Against Frontline Healthcare Workers in India: A Growing Menace in COVID-19 Times

    Our study aimed to understand the role of situational factors in instigating people to perform violence against frontline healthcare workers during the coronavirus disease outbreak in India. We performed a thematic analysis of secondary data, collected from online web pages of leading national and regional newspapers. The study proposed a framework linking situational factors and violence through the mechanism of emotional dynamics that led to aggression (stress, tension, and anger). Existing literature suggests that environmental and cognitive factors influence human learning and behaviour, and there is a chronological sequence of several activities to reach the point of committing violence. The current study identified three thematic areas: information deficit, mistrust in government actions, and socio-economic insecurities based on situational factors. False beliefs, rumours, lack of relief material, doubt in government actions, communication gap, and fear for life, land and livelihood were identified as situational factors. The study contributes to building a stronger theoretical foundation for the existing literature and filling the gap in effective intervention strategies for preventing such violent acts in the near future

    Outsourcing and Off-shoring: Options for the US Construction Industry

    The construction industry relies on the skills of structural engineers for all projects. There exists a large volume of design and detailing work for structural engineering in the United States (US) and there are insufficient numbers of qualified designers in the US to do the work. Recent changes in the telecommunications sector make off-shoring structural design work to developing countries like India and China a realistic possibility. Economics of outsourcing is a key reason for this possibility to be realized. It is logical to consider the effects of outsourcing in the design sector and its effects on the construction industry. The manuscript will present the author’s finding based on detailed case-study model research with two companies that are outsourcing work to India from the US. The author conducted detailed interviews with principals in US structural design firms and then traveled to Bangalore, India to interview their Indian counterparts. Results from these interviews are presented. The author will present an empirical model for outsourcing construction activities. Processes in the construction industry that are most suited for outsourcing and off-shoring are presented. Issues surrounding outsourcing such as training, economics and logistics are discussed.
