Short laws for finite groups and residual finiteness growth
We prove that for every n ∈ N n \in \mathbb {N} and δ > 0 \delta >0 there exists a word w n ∈ F 2 w_n \in F_2 of length O ( n 2 / 3 log ( n ) 3 + δ ) O(n^{2/3} \log (n)^{3+\delta }) which is a law for every finite group of order at most n n . This improves upon the main result of Andreas Thom [Israel J. Math. 219 (2017), pp. 469–478] by the second named author. As an application we prove a new lower bound on the residual finiteness growth of non-abelian free groups. </p

Sofic groups and diophantine approximation
We prove the algebraic eigenvalue conjecture of J. Dodziuk, P. Linnell, V. Mathai, T. Schick, and S. Yates (see [2]) for sofic groups. Moreover, we give restrictions on the spectral measure of elements in the integral group ring. Finally, we define integer operators and prove a quantization of the operator norm below 2. To the knowledge of the author, there is no group known that is not sofic. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

The hidden history of American oligarchy reclaiming our democracy from the ruling class
"Thom Hartmann, the most popular progressive radio host in America and a New York Times bestselling author, looks at the real history of the corrupting influence of oligarchy in America-and how we can fight back"-
L’ABF, gli obblighi informativi concernenti la prescrizione dei BFP e la decisione di non decidere aspettando il TAR Lazio : nota a Collegio ABF di Torino n. 6541 del 26 giugno 2023
With its decision no. 6541 of 26 June 2023, the Turin Banking and Financial Arbitration Board (ABF) dealt with the issue of claims for compensation for failure to repay postal savings bonds, which were time-barred.
The ABF declared the appeal inadmissible, due to the lack of finality of the AGCM's decision (PS 11287 - 18.10.2022) qualifying as an unfair commercial practice the professional's failure to provide subscribers with information about the approaching statute of limitations. The author critically examines the arguments developed by the Arbitrator, and particularly the profile pertaining to the issue of competence ratione materiae
Thom Gunn and William Carlos Williams
ABSTRACT
This article underlines the influence of William Carlos Williams on English language poetry and focuses on his importance in particular to the British poet Thom Gunn. The issue of the academic resistance to acknowledging the importance of Williams to the development of American poetry is raised against the backdrop of his enduring impact on voices such as Gunn and also that of the article’s author, August Kleinzahler.</jats:p
Remarks on the geology of South Africa
This article presents early 19th-century geological observations on South Africa, specifically addressing the discovery and nature of Organic Remains (fossils) across the Cape Colony, contradicting earlier assumptions that the region lacked such valuable monuments of a former world.
The author, Rev. Dr George Thom, notes that fossils—chiefly shells, trilobites, and encrinites—are predominantly found on the surfaces of inland plains and slightly embedded in argillaceous schist beyond the main primitive mountain range (Tulbagh, Worcester, etc.). He highlights the Karoo hills as the most abundant sources of specimens, providing evidence of an "ancient ocean; or of a great aqueous catastrophe."
Dr Thom credits a Mr Enslin with the first crucial recognition of the Shelly strata as true Organic Remains around 1804 or 1805 at the Keizie Baths. He distinguishes these older fossils, often found enveloped in hard schist or rounded pebbles, from more recent calcareous shell deposits found along the eastern and western coasts. The author reports collecting numerous specimens, including a unique cockle/muscle, a siliceous pebble of fossil coral from the Orange River, and many examples of the trilobite and encrinite (stone lily), concluding that the region offers a clear record for the "Geological inquirer" to read and understand
Effects of Anisotropy of Preferential flow on the Hydrology and Stability of Landslides
Infiltration is one of the most important landslides triggering mechanisms and it is controlled by the hydraulic characteristics of the soil, which depend on degree of saturation, existence of preferential flow paths and anisotropy. In order to account for preferential flow that can have place in macro-pores and fissures, it is common to represent the soil matrix by means of the superimposition of two different domains: a soil matrix domain, which mainly accounts for the flow in the porous matrix, and preferential flow domain representing the flow through macro-pores and fissures. There have been recent investigations on the influences of preferential flow on slope stability; however, the combined effects of anisotropy and preferential flow on infiltration processes and on rainfall induced landslide mechanisms have not been studied yet, at our knowledge. Aiming at better understanding the effects that anisotropy combined with preferential flow has on the infiltration process, we investigated the stability of a hillslope using a numerical modelling approach. Results indicate that anisotropy affects the slope stability and its failure area
