    Unfolding the act of photography

This thesis discusses the multifaceted status of the photograph, as a contribution to understanding the mechanics of the production of meaning within the photograph. In order to get a better view of how photographs function, I both revisit discourses that have dealt with medium specificity issues and use my own practice, designing an apprehension model which can assist in the achievement of a more rigorous conception of the photograph. An integrative literature review, based on Photography discourses and debates shaped by both theorists and practitioners, provides the tools needed for defining the medium’s unique and shared properties. Ontological synecdoches of the photograph, issues of representation, time, automatism, agency, the twofold nature –trace and picture- as well as depiction theories of the medium are put into scrutiny towards formulating an apprehension scheme. This body or knowledge, along with my visual practice’s research outcomes, informs the construction of an appropriate model for understanding the medium’s effect. In specific, this study designs and applies a synthesized model of thought which considers photographs as a fixed unity of interdependent links in the chain called ‘act of photography’. This model is based on the parameters that contribute towards a photograph’s apprehension –Operator, Apparatus, Scenery, Photograph, Viewer (OASPV). A thorough illustration of the application of this model onto a specific photograph is provided, showing how a verbal articulation of apprehending a photograph can take place in order for bad or poor readings to be avoided. An explanation of the working strategy I applied throughout my creative practice along with a discussion upon the images chosen for the portfolio accompanying this thesis, is offered. In specific, it is shown how the apprehension scheme is reflected in my practice, along with a contextualisation of my photographs -placing emphasis in notions such as the ordinary, ineffable, serendipity, trace and picture as well as similarities to the work of other practitioners. This thesis discusses the elements that formulate the encrypted information inscribed on the surface of photographs, namely it unfolds their layers throughout creating, perceiving and conceiving them

Efficiency and productivity change in Islamic and conventional banks: Evidence from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries

    No full text
We examine efficiency in Islamic and conventional banks in the GCC region during 2006-2012 using DEA and a meta-frontier approach. We find no significant difference between Islamic and conventional banks in terms of average gross efficiency. But net efficiency is significantly higher for conventional than Islamic banks suggesting superior performance in terms of technical efficiency (managerial competence and/or scale); type efficiency is higher for Islamic than conventional banks. Thus the Islamic banking business model leads to greater efficiency in the GCC over this period. A meta-frontier Malmquist productivity analysis of efficiency and productivity over time suggests that the financial crisis has been more pronounced in the conventional banking sector. The gap between the group and meta-frontiers widened in the wake of the crisis, but there are signs that this is now narrowing

Book review: living with hacktivism - from conflict to symbiosis by Vasileios Karagiannopoulos

Convictions of politically-motivated hackers - so-called 'hacktivists' - have hit the headlines in recent years. Living with Hacktivism: From Conflict to Symbiosis offers one of the first legal and regulatory analyses of this evolving phenomena. Author Vasileios Karagiannopoulos attentively guides the reader through the shortcomings of the contemporary legislative cybercrime and cyberterrorism landscape, focusing specifically on the USA and UK. Although Leonie Maria Tanczer would have hoped to see a stronger engagement with the work of ‘hackademics’, the publication is an important contribution to the evolving body of cybercrime literature

Hydration thermodynamics of pyrochlore structured oxides from TG and first principles calculations

    Get PDF
In this work we discuss trends in the defect chemistry and hydration thermodynamics of rare-earth pyrochlore structured oxides, RE2X2O7 (RE = La-Lu and X = Ce, Zr, Sn, Ti). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to elucidate trends in the general defect chemistry and hydration enthalpy for the abovementioned series. Further, to justify the use of such theoretical methods, the hydration properties of selected compositions were studied by means of thermogravimetric measurements. Both from DFT calculations and TG measurements, the hydration enthalpy becomes less exothermic with decreasing radii of RE-ions within the RE2X2O7 series (X=Ti, Sn, Zr, Ce). However, changing the X-site ion has smaller effect on the hydration enthalpies. The observed hydration trends are discussed in connection with trends in the stability of both protons and oxygen vacancies and changes in the electronic density of states and bonding environment through the series. Finally, the findings are discussed with respect to existing correlations for other binary and ternary rare-earth oxides

The Ayios Vasileios Survey Project : a preliminary outline of the habitation history and size of Ayios Vasileios compared to other palatial settlements

    No full text
The Ayios Vasileios Survey Project is a five-year project carried out at the site of Ayios Vasileios, where remains of a Mycenaean palatial complex have been uncovered. The project aims to reconstruct the extent and spatial development of the settlement through time, by means of pedestrian field survey, geophysical survey and ethnographic interviews. Our preliminary results, based on the surveys, indicate that the settlement may not have been continuously inhabited during the Bronze Age and was of limited extent. Furthermore, the presence of fortifications is uncertain. Compared to other (possible) palatial sites on the Greek Mainland, this developmental trajectory of Ayios Vasileios is somewhat unusual, but not entirely unique. We therefore argue, building upon earlier discussions, that the current palatial model of political organization in Late Bronze Age Greece is in need of reassessment. In the case of Ayios Vasileios, we may consider the possibility that its sudden rise to (a small) palatial site should be sought in its relations and integration with surrounding settlements. Indeed, we raise the possibility that power may have been shared among various groups within and among settlements in the area, which may explain the sudden fall of Ayios Vasileios
