    The Pigeonpea Genome

    Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is a crop of small land holding farmers in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. It has a number of usages starting from protein rich food to vegetarian families; fuel wood; nitrogen supplier to soil; recycling minerals in soil to animal feed etc. Pigeonpea has been considered to be originated and domesticated in central India from where it travelled to different parts of the world such as Africa and Latin America. In ongoing scenario of climate change, biotic and especially abiotic stresses will make the conditions more challenging for entire agriculture. This volume focusing on the pigeonpea genome will collate the information on the genome sequencing and its utilization in genomics activities, with a focus on the current findings, advanced tools and strategies deployed in pigeonpea genome sequencing and analysis, and how this information is leading to direct outcomes for plant breeders and subsequently to farmers

    A uniform gene and chromosome nomenclature system for oat (Avena spp.)

    Context. Several high-quality reference genomes for oat (Avena sativa L. and relatives) have been published, with the prospect of many additional whole-genome assemblies emerging in the near future. Aims. This has necessitated an effort by the International Oat Nomenclature Committee (IONC; all co-authors on this paper) to devise a universal system for naming oat genomes and subgenomes, chromosomes, genes, gene models and quantitative trait loci. Methods. We evaluated existing naming practices, recent data from oat whole-genome sequencing, and the newly published convention for wheat nomenclature. Key results. A framework for these rules has been posted on the GrainGenes database website (https://wheat.pw.usda.gov/GG3/oatnomenclature). The gene naming convention requires adoption of a numerical identifier for each genotype; we propose that these identifiers be assigned by contacting the GrainGenes curators, the curator of the Oat Newsletter, or a member of the IONC (as listed at the GrainGenes link above). Conclusions. We encourage oat researchers to refer to these resources, policies, procedures and conventions, adopting them as an international nomenclature standard. Implications. Adoption of these standards will facilitate communication and dissemination of oat research and allow programmatic access and data sharing across platforms, and will contribute to oat breeding and research worldwide.Agricultural Research Servic

    Classical and molecular cytogenetics in arachis

    The progress that has been achieved in understanding the chromosome complements of peanut and its related wild species is reviewed here. Chromosome markers developed by using fl uorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with rDNA probes and fl uorescent banding allowed the construction of the fi rst chromosome map in peanut and in some diploid taxa. They also revealed the existence of different karyotype structures within the section Arachis. Each group of species having different karyotype structure was defi ned as having different genomes. FISH analysis together with genomic in situ hybridization allowed the differentiation of chromosomes from A. duranensis and A. ipaënsis, the two species involved in the origin of cultivated peanut. The results obtained by these techniques also suggest that the wild tetraploid A. monticola is the direct ancestor of peanut and that the Northwest of Argentina and South of Bolivia are the regions from which the AABB tetraploids of section Arachis have arisen

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Molecular approaches and breeding strategies for drought tolerance in barley

    Barley genotypes, in particular landraces and wild species, represent an important source of variation for adaptive traits that may contribute to increase yield and yield stability under drought conditions, and that could be introgressed into improved varieties. Traits that have been investigated include physiological/biochemical and developmental/ morphological traits. Yield performance under drought is particularly a complex phenomenon, and plants exhibit a diverse range of genetically complex mechanisms for drought resistance. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies with and without H. spontaneum have shown that developmental genes, notably those involved in flowering time and plant stature show pleiotropic effects on abiotic stress tolerance and ultimately determine yield. Problems associated with the hybridization of H. spontaneum such as alleles with deleterious effects on field performance could be best addressed in the advanced backcross (AB-) QTL analysis. It was interesting to see that in AB-QTL populations like in balanced populations major QTL overshadowed minor QTL-alleles. Nevertheless, crosses with H. spontaneum, AB-QTL populations and association studies with H. spontaneum have also identified new alleles and genes that are related to abiotic stress tolerance. In order to identify genes that are related to drought tolerance microarrays analysis to monitor gene expression profiles for plants exposed to limited water environment is performed. Several studies with rapid dehydration treatment have shown that osmotic-stress-inducible genes could explain the response to drought stress in plants. Another development is the identification and use of nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in genes related to abiotic stress tolerance. An understanding of the combined function and expression of genes involved in various abiotic stresses, could help identify candidate genes underlying QTL of interest

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
