Escape Behavior of Emerita brasiliensis (Crustacea, Anomura, Hippidae); Schmitt, 1935
_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe escape behavior is an adaptable strategy from the predator-prey relationship influenced by the interaction between the physiology and abiotic structures. The sandy beaches are environments in constant changes that represent difficult challenges to their habitants. To adapt themselves to the stress, crustacean developed several behavior strategies. The species E. brasiliensis, important Brazilian macrofauna component, escapes from the predators and from the stress agents burying itself in the beaches. The aim of this study is to understand e evaluate the behavior adaptations of the escape behavior and relate it to the physical, chemical, biological and antropical challenges in Emerita brasiliensis. The research was developed in two phases. In both situations the methodology consisted in collecting the individuals which were conducted to a test aquarium then. Next, the individuals were released in the aquarium middle line, with the tail portion turned to the surfaction line. We could observe the complete latency of free-immersion. The abiotics measurements were made in the research places and the biometry were collected from the animals. On the first phase of the project, realized in an urban beach called Bombinhas (South Brazil), it was observed a variation in the abundance and the burying/escape behavior of the species after suffering an accident that ended up into an urban drain flush in that area. When compared, the earlier period (two days) and later (one day) to the accident, there was a substantial raise in the ammonia concentration in the sea water, however, the pH, the temperature of water, the salt water and the microclimate conditions kept stable. During the ammonia level elevation phase, there was less and smaller captured animals, the latency of burying/escape from the test, kept untouchable. The second phase was realized in the preserved Siriú and urbanized Garopaba beach. The differences of latency of escape for beachs were a analyzed, categorizing it in reproductive stages, applying the same test, comparing abiotics and biotics factors between both areas. We verified associated to the latency of escape associated to this abiotics factors and to the different reproductive stages. Related to the latency of escape we verified that the mole crab population as slower and smaller at Garopaba´s beach, no matter the reproductive stage category. Related to the size and the reproductive stage, we noticed that the bigger animals buried themselves faster. Female ovigerous and not ovigerous show higher efficiency in the escape behavior for burying. The different strategies adopted by the mole crab suggests a capable limited and segmented adaptation, answering the human inducted changes on the beach environment.
_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe cat is interesting specie for studies for emotions due to its stoic behavior and to its physiological particularities. Cats easily get stressed. Routine procedures as exposition to an unknown enviroment can produce stress in these animals. A study traditional indicator of stress in the serice cortisol, the main glicocorticoid of felines. The relation between psycological stress and glicocortinoids in cats is little explored in scientific literature. The body temperature has been studied as indicator of emotions in man and animals. It is suggested that the emotions affects mainly the tympanic temperaure, due to greater activity is oe brain hemisphere in relation to the other. The rectal teperature would not have the same efficiency to detect modifications of emotions. A study with two groups of cats in different situations was made aiming at relating the plasmatic cortisol, tympanic and rectal temperature to stress in routine veterinary procedures. In a study, 13 adult cats, of both sex, neutered, remained in individual jails duiring six hours, in the interment division of the Veteranary Hospital of Brasilia University. After this period it was measured the right tympanic temperature (RTT), left tympanic temperature (LTT) an d rectal temperature (RT) followed immediately by venopunction for measuring glycemia and cortisol. In another study, 23 male adults cats, not castrated, remained for six hours inside of transporte boxes, in a quite room of Integrated Laboratory of University of Braslia. Soon after, the animals were released in another room with enrichment and their behavior observed during to sequences of 15 minutes, with and without the Elizabeth-colar. In the interval and the end, the cats were restrained, their temperature measured and hey were venunpcioned with the same analytical objective of the first study. In both studies, the tympanic temperature were lower than the RT, but they all correlate. The thermic dynamics of the RTT was related to stree, when it lowered. In the seconds study the RTT was related to the stress of the Elizabeth-colar. The dynamics of LTT correlated to the Glycemia, when it lowered, in the second study. There was a relation between stress and thermic dinamic cats. The results are in accordanc with the principle of "selective Coolin Brain", considering that the Tympanic temperature reflect, in certain proporction, the stress and the wellfare in some mammals. The behavior of cats under intense stress presented asymetrical relatons to the termic phisylogy and to the endocrine phisyology. In domestic cats, routine active as simple hospital internment, change of enviroment and restrait transport boxes, can estimulate defense mechanisms similar to the ones studied in humans, as thermic body alteration ofbthe endocrine metabolism.
As principais variáveis
________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTPlaying is a set of behaviors related to the manipulation of physical and social
environment, apparently with no functions of survival and reproduction. The origin and
function of plays are obscure. Among the most widespread theories that explain the play is the
Surplus Energy Theory (SET). It predicts that, once met the needs of the individual, there
exists an impetus to drain energy in play. Among Neotropical primates, little is known about
the play, particularly among calitrichids. This study aimed to test the SET in the behavior of
wild marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). Two groups with about 15 individuals each, divided
into four age-reproductive categories were studied for eight months, observed by the focal
group method and recording of all occurrences. The main variables measured were play
(social and solitary), the spatial and temporal characteristics of play and daily distance
travelled by the group. The marmosets have engaged mostly in social games. They prefer to
play mostly in areas protected by aerial cover and low stratum of the forest, in a spectrum of
activities shaped by defense against predators. Young ones played more than infants that
played more than the adults. Breeders played minimally. The relative independence and
locomotor ability of self-sustaining justify such differences between the young and infants.
The burden of the activities of the group is greater for adults, which may have limited the
level of play in that category, and particularly in breeding. The concentration of games for
youngsters at the intermediate stage of the day is within the spectrum of activities rhythm of
the species, perhaps even as part of thermoregulation and accumulation of energy (nutrients)
in the previous hours. The adults played at the end of the day, due to the accumulation of
energy over the period and to complement the activities of social interaction. There was no
relationship between the distance traveled and the average frequency of play, nor are the
climatic variables correlated with the play. However, by analyzing age-sex category and by
level of traveled distance, it was observed that in smaller distances young played least, a
diametrically opposite result expected by the SET. The most plausible explanation for this
result is the occurrence of rain during a few days of observations, when the general activity of
marmosets is reduced. It follows that SET proved to be partially plausible to explain the
games in marmosets, but the theory is weak in order to understand in a comprehensive way
the play in this species. Other theories should be tested to complement the understanding of
the origins and functions of play in marmosets.
___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe antibiotic use as growth promotional is being gradually prohibiteddue to the possible risk of drugs resistance for human pathogenic bacteria resulting in an increasing interest for produced organic foods, that the public in general associated as healthful food. Between the options, the herbals extracts (amongst them the oregano, Origanum vulgare) are part of a class of products that will be able to substitute antimicrobials agents. In the first chapter it was evaluated the effect of addition oforegano (Origanum vulgare) essential oilin theintake, body weight gain, posture and fecal parasitological load of Japanesequails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The possible alterations in the hematological and biochemistry standards of these birds had been also analyzed. One hundred quails had been divided in 2 groups (experimental and control) of 50 animals. Every group had been divided in 5 lots with 10 quails each. Each cagepossessed one lot of the control group and another one of the experimental group. The control group had received ration standard for quails, added of canola vegetal oil in the ratio of 20g/kg ration. The experimental group had received for each kilogram of ration, 20g of the mixture of canola oil added oregano essential oil (in the concentration of 1%), aiming at to supply 200mg of essential oil for kilogram of food. The addition ofessential oil was not modified the performance and did not display antiparasite activity in the experimental group. No effect was detected in the biochemistry and hematological parameters of the quails treated with the oregano oil, in 90 days of chronic administration. In the second chapter, the antioxidant activity of the oregano was evaluated. For this, in the last day of the experiment, thirty animals (fifteen of each group) had been submitted to immobilization stress (this procedureisable to generate oxidative stress) and others thirty birds (fifteen of each treatment) remained in the cages (birds were not stressed). The experimental group had gotten lowers values of monocytes, band neutrophil, monocytes/lymphocytes ratio and glucose, when compared with the control group. It did not have significant differences in the carbonyl proteins and TBARS concentrations. The results suggest that the oregano essential oil promoted a protective effect in the supplemented animals when they had been submitted to immobilization.Faculdade de Agronomia e Medicina Veterinária (FAV)Programa de Pós-Graduação em Agronomi
Environmental enrichment for neotropical primates in captivity Enriquecimento ambiental para primatas neotropicais em cativeiro
Captivity is an extreme non-natural environment for primates. The success of a breeding colony depends of management and veterinarian procedures which must rely on the knowledge of primates' behavioral needs. Environmental enrichment consists of a series of procedures that improve the quality of life of captive animals by meeting their ethological needs. Enrichment can reduce stress, while increasing animal well being in captivity. Suitable ethical conditions, incidences of behavioral disorders, minimal clinical interventions, low mortality, higher reproduction rates and cost/benefit relationship, reflect directly on the quality of captive breeding colonies. Anthropoids like Neotropical primates possess complex neural structures and relate, in a sophisticated manner, to the environment. This review reports important experiences on enrichment procedures for Neotropical primates and the physiological events which could explain improvement of animal well-being.
Effects of the chronic psicossocial stress and environmental enrichment in marmosets (Callithrix penicillata)a behavioral, physiological and pharmacological study
A imunidade aparentemente permaneceu funcional. Under intense stress, it can have a rupture of three adaptive mechanisms. Environmental influences the resistance to the stress. The marmoset, is resistant to the glicocorticoids and have developed a series of defensive strategies. In this work, it aimed at to accomplish a study in marmosets, on the response of behavioral, physiological and pharmacological to the stress and the environmental enriched conditions. Twenty four marmosets were observed in a base line for 9 weeks. Fourteen behavioral patterns were analyzed, with the method of focal animal. 21 days of treatments were followed for subjects submitted to the stress (N=10), to the enrichment (N=7) and without manipulation (controls, N=7). In the stress the subjects were isolated and exposed daily to brief psychological stressors. In the enrichment the subjects received innovations and tasks of obtaining food. It was followed after the treatments, a habituation to the maze in \"8\" and exhibition to the predator. After the habituation, the subjects received buspirone (three dosis) and saline, in the paradigm of the maze in \"8.\" At the end of the base line and of the treatments, data were collected on weight, blood for blood count, cortisol, free fat acids and glicemya. Measures of timpanic and rectal temperature were also collected. The results suggest that the stress caused a rupture of the behavioralpatterns, increasing the time of hide in the box nest. There was the increase in the cortisol and free fat acids; it happened hypoglycemia and severe weight loss. The immunity seemingly stayed functional. In the subsequent phases, the stressed group had a learning deficiency in the habituation to the maze and it was relatively refractory to the action of the buspirone. The enriched group reduced the aggressive behavior, a consistent increase in the tendency of exploring, but an apparent ansiogenic response to the buspirone. The treatments altered the response substantially of the individuals to the emotional challenges. This alteration reached the response to the buspirone, being supposed that the serotonegic system was sensitized. The groups adopted different defense strategies and use of the environmental conditions. Considering the resistance to the cortisol, marmosets can be benefited with a great plasticity neural and behavioral. The stress model seemed to be appropriate but the enrichment would deserve a new approach for a larger earnings of resistance to the emotional challenge
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
