A Little Book of Aesop's Fables

    No full text
Here is a little treasure from my visit with Matthew Eve at Marchpane in Cecil Court. Tom R. Rigby is new to me. His full-page black-and-white illustrations might remind one of Percy Billinghurst's in their format and approach. They seem to me right for this "little book," since they stress visually and in text a good focus for particular fables. The book is surprisingly generously illustrated. TMCM has the city food "hid under the seat" (29). Like so many before him, Rigby struggles with lion's faces. "The Little Books Series" is intended "for young and old." This little book is fragile, and many pages are loose. 93 pages. About 4" x 5¼". Oxford and Cambridge are the only places WorldCat lists as having the book besides us! I am following their guess of 1908. Our copy is inscribed in 1912.No Autho

    A Conversation With Tom Friedman

Donald Trump promised to "Make America Great Again" and yet disarray and decline abound. Over the past 6 months, the President failed to slow the Coronavirus as our allies have done and the economic decline set a record. Still more profoundly, the President and his political allies have undercut the sources of American prosperity and global influence - our cutting edge education and scientific infrastructure along with our success in cultivating a level of social harmony in a diverse country that has eluded our European allies. President Trump's Middle East agreement is historic but received little public acclaim because of the chaos and division that he fueled. Award-winning author and New York Times columnist Tom Friedman joins us to discuss this and other issues.Jacobs, Lawrence R.. (2020). A Conversation With Tom Friedman. The first sealed TOM Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) with 10-in. diameter has been fabricated and successfully tested at CERN. This HPD has a spherical entrance window and a bialkali photocathode. The fountain focusing optics produces a demagnified image (D = 4) on the round segmented silicon sensor. The signals of the 2048 cells are read out through analog front-end electronics encapsulated in the vacuum envelope. We report on the design, fabrication technique and the experimental results obtained with laboratory test benches. The large TOM HPD is a prototype tube developed for the CLUE cosmic ray experiment. The final tubes, now under development, will be equipped with a solar-blind Rb//2Te photocathode and self triggering front-end electronics

    Tom Bombadil: irreducible mystery

    No full text
This Direct Doctorate thesis develops an interpretation of the character Tom Bombadil, included in J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium, emphasizing the mystery inherent in its being. With this in mind, this project doesn’t intend to solve the character mystery but to contemplate and circumscribe it in this way, showing that the aspects used in its formation make it a mystery; in other words, it is an unresolvable creation. For this purpose, we analyzed manifestations of Tom in the Tolkienian universe, present in The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955) — as well as in the notes and drafts produced during the elaboration of this novel —, in the poems of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (1962), and also in the letters written by the author, present in The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien (1981). From this analytical recovery, different readings already proposed about the character are presented, developed by specialized critics and fans, in several means of dissemination — books, chapters, dissertations, articles, websites, and blogs. Furthermore, highlighted aspects in the character's composition are addressed: its relationship with elements of Nature, especially air and fire; its musical speech, through which the character exerts its magical power; and its elemental, mysterious, and mystical relationship with Goldberry. In addition, the scene in which Bombadil holds the One Ring in its hands is one of the most intriguing and controversial of whole Tolkienian mythology. Finally, we observe the impossibility of knowing the character’s origin, which keeps its essence hidden, safeguarding its mystery-being. Thus, through theoretical-critical investigations arising from Philosophy, Jungian Psychology, and Literary Theory, we problematize Tom Bombadil as a mystery in itself, as a manifestation of the mystery, which mystery present in all mythology, in all religion: the irreducible mystery

There can be no better venue for paying homage to celebrated writers than a journal devoted to wordplay. A score of such literary luminaries awaiting well-deserved recognition is concealed in the listing below. Revealing a name entails permuting the collection that results when a new letter replaces a given one in each word. To illustrate, after scrambling, the creators of Tom Sawyer and Robinson Crusoe will be exposed when W supplants G in GIANT and O does the same to R in FREED, respectively. A perfect score authorizes you to call yourself an author authority

Pecking order and debt capacity considerations for high-growth companies seeking financing

    No full text
This paper examines incremental financing decisions within high-growth businesses. A large longitudinal dataset, free of survivorship bias, to cover financing events of high-growth businesses for up to 8 years is analyzed. The empirical evidence shows that profitable businesses prefer to finance investments with retained earnings, even if they have unused debt capacity. External equity is particularly important for unprofitable businesses with high debt levels, limited cash flows, high risk of failure or significant investments in intangible assets. These findings are consistent with the extended pecking order theory controlling for constraints imposed by debt capacity. It suggests that new equity issues are particularly important to allow high-growth businesses to grow beyond their debt capacity
