Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Percepción del estudiantado de Manejo de Recursos Naturales con respecto a las estrategias metodológicas virtuales de asignaturas con componente práctico en tiempos de COVID-19
At the beginning of 2020, when the international health emergency was declared due to the COVID-19 disease, the transformation to virtuality at the Distance State University (UNED) of Costa Rica was less complex than in other higher education institutions. However, it was necessary to adapt subjects with practical in-person activities such as laboratories and field trips to a 100% virtual modality. In the Natural Resources Management (MARENA) program, specifically in the Natural Sciences (CN) and Ecology and Environmental Education (EEA) courses, methodological strategies were designed and implemented, including supporting audiovisual materials, video tutorials, at-home laboratory practices, virtual field trips, virtual oral presentations, and collaborative work. This research used a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach with descriptive and exploratory aspects. Additionally, a tool was applied to assess students' perception of the virtual methodological strategies in four MARENA subjects with practical components. It was determined that the 100% virtual education process caused by COVID-19 facilitated the maximization of virtual tools usage, the need for digital literacy among teachers and students, the continuous search for methodological strategies, the design of detailed instructions for students, and finally, the value of in-person fieldwork and laboratory activities compared to the virtual format became evident. The objective of this study is to analyze students' perception in the CN and EEA courses regarding the virtual methodological strategies applied in subjects with practical components during the pandemic in 2021.A inicios del 2020, al declararse emergencia sanitaria internacional por la enfermedad COVID-19, en la Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED) de Costa Rica, la transformación a la virtualidad es menos compleja que en otras instituciones de educación superior. Sin embargo, es necesaria una adaptación de las asignaturas con actividades prácticas presenciales como laboratorios y giras de campo a modalidad 100% virtual. En la carrera Manejo de Recursos Naturales (MARENA) y específicamente en las cátedras de Ciencias Naturales (CN) y Ecología y Educación Ambiental (EEA), se diseñan y aplican estrategias metodológicas como materiales audiovisuales de apoyo, video tutorías, prácticas de laboratorio en casa, video giras, exposiciones orales virtuales y trabajo colaborativo. En esta investigación, se utiliza un enfoque mixto cualitativo y cuantitativo con aspectos descriptivos y exploratorios. Además, se aplica un instrumento para conocer la percepción del estudiantado con respecto a las estrategias metodológicas virtuales de cuatro asignaturas de MARENA con componentes prácticos. Se determina que el proceso de educación virtual al 100% provocado por la Covid-19 propicia la maximización del uso de herramientas virtuales, la necesidad de una alfabetización digital docente y estudiantil, la búsqueda constante de estrategias metodológicas, el diseño de instrucciones detalladas para el estudiantado y, por último, es evidente el valor del trabajo de campo y laboratorio presencial con respecto al virtual. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar la percepción del estudiantado de las cátedras de CN y EEA con respecto a las estrategias metodológicas virtuales aplicadas en asignaturas con componente práctico durante la pandemia en el año 2021
Estrategias metodológicas en actividades prácticas de la carrera Manejo de Recursos Naturales de la UNED durante la pandemia por la COVID-19
In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international public health emergency due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). This forced many countries to close their educational establishments as prevention. In the graduate program Nature Resource Management (known as MARENA) and specifically the Chairs of Natural Sciences (NC), and Ecology and Environmental Education (EEE). Therefore it was necessary to adapt our courses with in-person practices, field trips, labs, and workshops into an entirely virtual modality. In order to continue with the academic year, methodological strategies were designed and applied using technological tools and information and communications technology (ICT). Some methodological strategies included: home laboratories, virtual workshops, video field trips, video laboratories, and other audiovisual support materials. The present work aims at analyzing the methodological strategies in the courses of our NC and EEE Chairs that required practical activities during the COVID-19 pandemics in 2020 and 2021. A qualitative research model consisting of descriptive and exploratory aspects and applied content analysis as an analytical method was used. A total of twelve career courses that required a practical class were considered. According to this experience, incorporating ICTs and technological tools as allies of the teaching and learning processes can be crucial for assuring meaningful learning to the students. Therefore, success or failure and monitoring ICTs incorporation should be the subject of future studies.
En marzo de 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) declaró emergencia sanitaria a nivel internacional por la enfermedad COVID-19. Esto obligó a que muchos países cerraran preventivamente los centros educativos. En la carrera de Manejo de Recursos Naturales (MARENA), y específicamente las cátedras de Ciencias Naturales (CN) y Ecología y Educación Ambiental (EEA) de la Universidad Estatal a Distancia, fue necesario adaptar las asignaturas con actividades presenciales prácticas, como giras de campo, laboratorios y talleres, a una modalidad enteramente virtual. Se diseñaron y aplicaron estrategias metodológicas utilizando herramientas tecnológicas y tecnologías de comunicación e información (TIC), para dar continuidad al ciclo lectivo. Algunas de las estrategias metodológicas empleadas fueron los laboratorios en casa, talleres virtuales, videogiras, videolaboratorios y materiales audiovisuales de apoyo. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar las estrategias metodológicas en actividades prácticas de las asignaturas de las cátedras de CN y EEA ante la pandemia por la COVID-19, durante los años 2020-2021. Se utilizó un modelo cualitativo de investigación compuesto por aspectos descriptivos y exploratorios y mediante la aplicación del análisis de contenido como método analítico. En total, se consideraron doce asignaturas de la carrera que debieron contar con el respectivo componente práctico. De acuerdo con la experiencia vivida, la incorporación de las TIC y herramientas tecnológicas, como aliados del proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje, puede resultar determinante para la continuidad del aprendizaje significativo en el estudiantado. El éxito o fracaso, así como el seguimiento de la incorporación de las TIC, debe ser objeto de próximos estudios.

Isso obrigou muitos países a fechar instituições de ensino como medida preventiva. Na carreira de Manejo de Recursos Naturais (MARENA), e especificamente nos cursos de Ciências Naturais (NC) e Ecologia e Educação Ambiental (EEA) da Universidad Estatal a Distancia, foi necessário adaptar as disciplinas com atividades práticas em sala de aula, como viagens de campo, laboratórios e oficinas, para uma modalidade totalmente virtual. Foram concebidas e aplicadas estratégias metodológicas utilizando ferramentas tecnológicas de (TIC) para dar continuidade ao ciclo letivo. Algumas das estratégias metodológicas empregadas foram laboratórios caseiros, oficinas virtuais, visitas em vídeo, vídeo em laboratórios e materiais de apoio audiovisual. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar as estratégias metodológicas em atividades práticas nas disciplinas dos cursos CN e EEA durante a pandemia da COVID-19, nos anos de 2020-2021. Foi utilizado um modelo de pesquisa qualitativa, consistindo em aspectos descritivos e exploratórios e aplicando a análise de conteúdo como método analítico. Em total, foram consideradas doze disciplinas da carreira que continham o respectivo componente prático. De acordo com nossa experiência, a incorporação das TIC e das ferramentas tecnológicas, como aliados do processo de ensino e aprendizagem, pode ser decisiva para a continuidade de uma aprendizagem significativa nos estudantes. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
