    Bio-molecular diagnosis through Random Subspace Ensembles of Learning Machines.

    Traditional clinical diagnostic approaches may sometimes fail in detecting tumors (Alizadeh et al. 2001). Several results showed that bio-molecular analysis of malignancies may help to better characterize malignancies (e.g. gene expression profiling). Information for supporting both diagnosis and prognosis of malignancies at bio-molecular level may be obtained from high-throughput biotechnologies (e.g. DNA microarray). Recent work on unsupervised analysis of complex bio-molecular data (Bertoni and Valentini, 2006) showed that random projections obeying the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma can be used for: – Discovering structures in bio-molecular data – Validating clustering results – Improving clustering results RS ensembles can improve the accuracy of biomolecular diagnosis characterized by very high dimensional data. They could be also easily applied to heterogeneous bio-molecular and clinical data. A new promising approach consists in combining state of the art feature (gene) selection methods and RS ensembles. RS ensembles are computationally intensive but can be easily parallelized using clusters of workstations (e.g. in a MPI framework)

    Enhancing Predictability in Deep Reinforcement Learning for Building Temperature Control

    In recent years, machine learning-based methods have become increasingly popular for addressing control problems. Within the context of temperature control in buildings, reinforcement learning algorithms stand out as an appealing model-free and fast real-time execution alternative to classical model-based control methods. However, these techniques lack interpretability and require a significant amount of data. In this paper, we investigate the application of an actor-critic reinforcement learning algorithm for the temperature control of a medium-size building through a specific model-based training approach. More specifically, the goal is here to enhance the predictive capabilities of actor-critic schemes by proposing extensions to state-of-the-art algorithms, which integrate a simplified model as a state predictor and incorporate future disturbances. This leads to the so-called Recursive Actor-Critic, Look-Ahead Trajectory Actor-Critic, and Augmented Actor-Critic schemes. Experimental results show that such improved reinforcement learning approaches can achieve performance comparable to model predictive control, without the need for real-time optimization nor a huge amount of data

    Describing and projecting the age and spatial structures of interregional migration in Italy

    A multiplicative component model is applied in this paper to present a simple, yet powerful, framework for analyzing and projecting internal migration flows. The multiplicative components are useful for identifying important underlying structures in the migration patterns. To demonstrate, seven periods of age-specific interregional migration in Italy (1970-1971 to 2000-2001) are analyzed. This information is then used to project the age and spatial structures forward to the 2010-2011 period. The projection model focuses on the underlying structures, which allows both the stable and changing aspects of the migration patterns to be included

In the foreground, in addition to the numerous and brilliant characters, one of the protagonists is the Mantuan landscape which, not a simple background, becomes a true literary parameter which in different and significant ways affects the purposes and mechanisms of the novel
