    Tourism is currently undergoing a digital transition that is transforming it at a rapid pace. The Internet of Things has the capability to completely revolutionise tourist experiences by allowing visitors to connect digitally with local inhabitants via sensors and cameras linked to buildings and devices throughout towns and neighbourhoods. The main aim of this chapter is to discuss the IoT applications in the hospitality sector, as well as their organisational consequences. After introducing a few basic ideas and terminologies, we discuss the growth of IoT in the tourism ecosystem, tracing a few exemplary scenarios and identifying the important players. The focus then shifts to the IoT's possibilities in the hospitality industry, where smart room design and development are already underway. The Marriott case study analysis is presented in the chapter's centre portion as trailblazing evidence of an important paradigm shift toward ubiquitous smart services in high-end hotels. Finally, we discuss privacy concerns and the theoretical and practical implications regarding the adoption of the IoT in hospitality

    Network effects in technology acceptance: Laboratory experimental evidence

    This research analyzes network effects in technology acceptance. The hypothesis is that the size of the user network affects technology acceptance. Even today, empirical measurement of network effects is challenging and there is a lack of experimental evidence. In order to investigate and measure the relation- ship between network size (number of adopters) and user acceptance, technology acceptance research needs to broaden its scope and approaches. To overcome this limitation we reproduce a particular type of technology acceptance process in a laboratory experiment, controlling for user network size and testing its influence on user perceptions and, ultimately, on acceptance decisions. We measured user perceptions and analyzed the data using consolidated and tested technology acceptance models. The results confirm our hypothesis, showing a significant effect of user network size on user perceptions. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our approach and findings

    This article aims to understand how network SMEs are involved in sustainability transition using information systems to support sustainable network management. The present study analyzes a three-year in-depth longitudinal case study of an Italian business network orchestrated by the “Brun Gelmino” Company. The leading firm developed sustainability-oriented network information systems with the collaboration of “Feelera”, an intermediary operating in the industry of sustainability-oriented information systems and platforms development. The results provide insights into the implementation of a sustainable shift of a business network by leveraging sustainability-oriented information systems to develop a network sustainability platform. Indeed, a sustainability-oriented information system may be a key driver to increase a business network's understanding of sustainability-related issues, improve the network’s sustainability performance, and foster a network’s sustainability transition through the implementation of new organizational practices. However, the implementation of a sustainability-oriented information system may also generate negative dynamics, resulting in a series of tensions between the network leading firm, the network firms, and external stakeholders such as clients or institutions

    Modern organizations, particularly in Healthcare, increasingly adopt knowledge Intensive Processes (KIPs) and use work teams to perform knowledge intensive tasks and coordination activities. Despite a growing interest on the topic of KIPs, studies analyzing the role of interactions among knowledge workers and their collaboration dynamics as drivers of process performance are still lack in the literature. This research aims to offer a methodological support towards a more quantitative and systematic analysis of such process dynamics. Thus, a state of the art is assessed by a structured and in-depth investigation of the academic literature. Results focus on Sociometric badges/sensors as an innovative way and potential valuable tool to quantitatively analyze social dynamics of collaboration in KIPs by measuring participant interactions and group behavior. Main benefits and possible alerts are identified and analyzed in order to provide valuable directions for applications and further research

    An Emerging Digital Ecosystem: Blockchain Competence Certification Networks

    In this paper, we investigate how blockchain technologies improve the certification system and generate added value for different involved actors - learners, educational institutions, and businesses. An exploratory study is proposed to systematize the overall impacts of blockchain in the field of digital certification while focusing on university education as the main research area. We carried out a desk analysis, direct observation/focus groups and semi-structured interviews with key players of the two Italian universities which had first adopted certification and blockchain-based-certification systems. The aim is to understand the drivers and value generation conditions in the new scenario introduced by the development of DACS (Digital Academic Certification System) through insight into the relationships between actors in the ecosystem that characterize the different types of complementarities between actors and services before and after the introduction of blockchain-based platforms and the personal wallet containing titles and certifications. Three main findings arose from the study related to actors, ecosystem, and complementarities. The main theoretical contributions of this study is that it produces the first empirical evidence of the new Ecosystem Theory proposed by Jacobides et al. [1]. From the managerial perspective, this study contributes to better identify and debate the conditions and success factors unlocking value generation and benefits embedded in Digital Certification Ecosystems
