    Low-level laser therapy and vibration therapy for the treatment of localized adiposity and fibrous cellulite

    Introduction: In recent years, there has been an upsurge in the application of low-level laser therapy in various medical diseases. Additionally, vibration therapy is a new and effective measure to prevent muscular atrophy and osteoporosis, along with some general health-related beneficial effects of exercise on skeletal muscles such as improvement of endothelial function and an increased enzyme capacity of energy metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of a 635 nm and 0.040W exit power per multiple diode laser in combination with vibration therapy for the application of non-invasive reduction of circumference in patients with localized adiposity and cellulite. Methods: The study enrolled men and women (N = 33) aged 18-64 years with localized adiposity or fibrous cellulite. The evaluation parameters were: photographic evaluation, perimetric evaluation, blood tests, ecographic evaluation, histological evaluation, and subjective and objective tests. Results: The results produced were statistically analyzed and resulted in a significant reduction of fat thickness when compared to the measurement prior to the treatment (P<0.0001). Moreover, subjective and objective tests, as well as ecographic and histological evaluations, confirmed the reduction of fat thickness. Conclusion: In this study we have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of the combination between low-level laser therapy and vibration therapy for the resolution of localized adiposity and fibrous cellulite. © The Author(s) 2013

    Osteoarticular grafts in the treatment of OCD of the talus: mosaicplasty versus autologous chondrocyte transplantation

    Further advancements in articular cartilage transplantation require an understanding of the anatomy, physiology, biomaterials, biology, and cartilage engineering that are fundamental for better results in joint arthroplasty and cartilage repair. Currently, efforts to induce healing and regeneration of cartilage are being directed toward enhancing the natural potential of cartilage to replace the damaged tissue with cells that can generate cartilage. Mosaicplasty and ACT are carried out in the same way, have similar therapeutic indications, and have been demonstrated capable of reconstructing hyaline cartilage with similar clinical results. ACT is the most recent technique and, in the authors' opinion, is preferable in that it is less invasive at the donor site and gives better histologic results because of the reconstruction of a continuous cartilage sheath compared with that achieved by mosaicplasty. Furthermore, with this technique, it is possible to forecast the possibility of improvement owing to further technical and biologic advancements. The authors are currently experimenting with the use of adhesive patches with substitution of the periosteum, resulting in less morbidity. The use of growth factors and new tissue engineering techniques in the future would simplify the methodology, rendering it less invasive and more effective

    Radiofrequency waves with filling and peeling substances: An innovative minimally invasive technique for facial rejuvenation

    Introduction: This study describes a pivotal clinical trial of a new minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for facial rejuvenation and for the treatment of scars and wrinkles. Methods: The procedure consisted of a combination of techniques such as fillers, biorevitalization, peeling, and intradermal radiofrequency, emitted from a new device denominated by Spherofill Medical Plus (SMP; Spherofill MD, PromoItalia Group S.p.A., Pozzuoli, Italy), for treating cutaneous regeneration, depressions, and striae. One hundred and twelve patients, divided into five groups, were treated. Results: The results produced were statistically analyzed and resulted in significant and long-lasting effects for facial rejuvenation. Indeed, the analysis of the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) scores in the five groups demonstrated statistically significant results between 3 and 9 months after the treatments. Conclusion: Evaluating the patients included in the study, it is possible to conclude that the treatment with SMP represents a safe and efficient solution for the treatment of wrinkles, acne lesions, striae, and of degenerated tissues caused by aging. © The Author(s) 2011

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
