Topics in Energy Release and Particle Acceleration in the Heliosphere

    No full text
This thesis investigates both the release of energy in solar flares, and the acceleration and transport of particles in various astrophysical situations. While numerical simulations are central to this thesis, these are always motivated by analytical arguments. A review of flare energy release is given in Chapter 2, with results presented in Chapters 3 and 4. The main goal of the flare work is to investigate the effect of viscosity on energy release rates. Scaling arguments and exact solutions of the magnetohydrodynamic equations are used to interpret the results of two-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection. The results support viscous energy dissipation accounting for a significant fraction of flare energy release. Chapter 5 contains an introduction to astrophysical particle acceleration, using the Fokker-Planck formulation. The theory introduced in this chapter is used to study electron transport in solar flare loops (Section 5.5). A key aspect of the analysis is the expression of the Fokker-Planck equation as a system of stochastic differential equations. A generalisation to the flare loop hard X-ray emission prediction of Conway et al. (1998) is obtained, giving a stronger dependence on density for dispersed initial distributions. Chapter 6 uses the methods of the previous chapter to study the acceleration of cosmic-rays at the heliospheric termination shock. The applicability of the focused acceleration mechanism of Schlickeiser and Shalchi (2008) is examined using numerical simulations, which are interpreted using analytical arguments based on averaging the stochastic equations. The results show significant limitations in assuming a near-isotropic distribution, a requirement for the focused acceleration mechanism. In addition, momentum diffusion provides a significant effect that cannot be neglected. The theory is extended to include focused deceleration and pure momentum diffusion

The effect of the dynamic adsorption mode on impedance of composite structures with porous silicon

    No full text
Impedance and optical properties of pressed composites based on microcrystalline and nanoporous silicon powders were studied. Porous silicon crystallites were obtained by stain etching of initial microcrystalline silicon powder. Oxygen passivation of the surface during porous-powder formation provided stability of composite characteristics. An analysis of experimental dependences of the impedance in a frequency range of 1-106 Hz allowed separation of contributions of grain bulk and crystallite interfaces to the total composite conductivity. The results of the study of the time dependences of the impedance were used to determine the variation rates of electrical parameters of composite structures under dynamic adsorption-desorption influence of external reactants (H2O and C2H5OH). © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

Литвиненко Наталья Валерьевна, доктор психологических наук, профессор, заведующий кафедрой педагогики дошкольного и начального образования, Оренбургский государственный педагогический университет, г. Оренбург, [email protected]. Natalya V. Litvinenko, Doctor of Psychological Science, Professor, Head of department of Pedagogy of preschool and primary education, Orenburg State Pedagogical University, Orenburg, [email protected]На основе анализа научной литературы в статье констатируется, что в настоящее время имеет место экстенсивно-эмпирический путь развития проблемы адаптации школьников к образовательной среде, накопление, как правило, фрагментарных эмпирических данных и их описание. The author analysed scientific literature and made the conclusion in the article that now extensive-empirical way of development of the problem of the pupil's adaptation to educational environment exists in science. The accumulation of fragmental empirical facts and their description also take place. In connection with it the relevant problem of pedagogic psychology is the methodic concordance of these facts for substantiation of theoretical methods studying the pupil's adaptation to educational environment in different critical periods of development. The substantiation of the knowledge of the adaptation which was got by complex of sciences about the human being let to consider the adaptation to be the process of the interaction between the person and social environment. This process promotes the adoption of the social norms, values and the formation of the attitude to them, the adoption of the methods of activity and types of the interpersonal relations and the realization of the personal potential. In the article the author proves his choice of three methods: anthropological, systematic, subjective. And with their help the author investigates the adaptation of the pupils for the educational environment during the critical periods of development. These methods let the author to study the adaptation process with taking into account the two components of the child’s psychological development: the social situation of the development and the personal peculiarities. The author pointed the psychology factors, the conditions of the successful adaptation process and it’s inner personal determinants

Holstiho teorie, která pojednává o interakci bezpečnostních a ekonomických opatření států v situaci vnějšího ohrožení, poskytuje vodítko k porozumění podoby britské reakce. V rámci osvětlení kontextu je poskytnut přehled vzájemných vztahů a britské politiky vůči Rusku před událostí a podrobný popis života i tragické smrti Alexandra Litiviněnka. The bachelor thesis titled "The Impact of the Murder of Alexander Litvinenko on British Policy towards Russia" deals with the issue of British policy towards Russia in response to the murder of Alexander Litvinenko, which significantly cooled bilateral relations. The thesis focuses on the analysis of the security and diplomatic actions of the British government and their connection with economic strategies, which is interpreted through the theoretical framework of the thesis - the theory of Canadian political scientist Kalevi Holsti. Holsti's theory, which discusses the interaction of states' security and economic measures in the face of external threats, provides a guide to understanding the shape of the British response. To illuminate the context, an overview of the British policy towards Russia prior to the event is provided, as well as a detailed account of the life and tragic death of Alexander Litvinenko. The period of around one and a half year after the murder is examined to avoid the influence of other events on British policy. Based on the secondary literature studied and the primary sources available, the outcome of this thesis is an analysis of the British government's policy towards Russia in the wake of the incident and an assessment of the unevenness of the response across different...Department of European StudiesKatedra evropských studiíFakulta sociálních vědFaculty of Social Science

Wave energy dissipation by anisotropic viscosity in magnetic x-points

    No full text
The viscous dissipation of axial field disturbances in planar magnetic X-points is examined. It is emphasized that an accurate treatment requires a nonisotropic tensor viscosity whose components are governed by the local magnetic field. Numerical solutions are constructed, which compare the buildup of viscous forces using the tensor formulation against a simplified model based on conventional shear viscosity. The scaling of the global energy-loss rate with the viscosity coefficient is shown to follow for both the traditional shear viscosity and the Braginskii bulk viscosity. This suggests that viscous wave dissipation can occur quite rapidly, in a few tens of Alfvén times. The results imply that large-scale disturbances, generated by magnetic reconnection in the solar corona, should dissipate in a time on the order of a few minutes and significantly contribute to coronal heating

Particle acceleration scalings based on exact analytic models for magnetic reconnection

    No full text
Observations suggest that particle acceleration in solar flares occurs in the magnetic reconnection region above the flare loops. Theoretical models for particle acceleration by the reconnection electric field, however, employ heuristic configurations for electric and magnetic fields in model current sheets, which are not solutions to the MHD reconnection problem. In the present study, particle acceleration is discussed within the context of a self-consistent MHD reconnection solution. This has the advantage of allowing poorly constrained local parameters in the current sheet region to be expressed in terms of the boundary conditions and electric resistivity of the global solution. The resulting acceleration model leads to energy gains that are consistent with those for high-energy particles in solar flares. The overall self-consistency of the approach is discussed
