The A Theory Of Magnitude (ATOM) model in temporal perception and reproduction tasks.
According to the A Theory of Magnitude (ATOM) model, time, numbers and space are processed by a common analog magnitude system. The model proposes that time, numbers and space are influenced by each other. Indeed, spatial-temporal (STEARC effect), spatial-numerical (SNARC effect) and temporal-numerical (TiNARC effect) interactions have been observed. However, the processing of time, numbers and space has not yet been studied within the same experimental procedure. The goal of this study is to test the ATOM model using a procedure in which time, numbers and space are all present. The participants were asked to perform temporal estimation (Experiment 1) and reproduction (Experiment 2) tasks in two different conditions, with either numbers or letters as stimuli. In Experiment 1, significant STEARC, SNARC and TiNARC effects were found in general and when numbers were presented. Moreover, a significant triple interaction between space, time and magnitude was observed, indicating associations between the left key, short duration and small magnitudes, as well as between the right key, long duration and large magnitudes. These results were similar in reaction times and accuracy. In Experiment 2, the results of reproduction times mirrored the previous data but the triple interaction was not found on reproduction times. Considering the temporal accuracy, the STEARC, SNARC and TiNARC effects as well as triple interaction were found. The results seem to partially confirm the ATOM model, even if differences between temporal tasks should be posited
Differential diagnosis between usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) assessed by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT)
Differential diagnosis between usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) assessed by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). Radiologia Medica, vol. 19, n. 5-6, 2005, pp. 472-487 Bna C, Zompatori M, Poletti V, Spaggiari E, Chetta A, Calabro E, Ormitti F, Berti E, Cancellieri A, Chilosi M. Sezione di Scienze Radiologiche, Dipartimento di Scienze Cliniche, Universita degli studi di Parma, Parma, Italy. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of high-resolution CT in the differential diagnosis between UIP and NSIP, and the correlations with histological and functional findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients underwent thin-collimation spiral CT (1 mm), with 10-mm interval. Pulmonary function was assessed with a pneumotacograph and body plethysmograph connected with a computer for data analysis. Three pathologists, blinded to the clinical and functional data, provided a histological diagnosis based on established criteria reported in the literature. The study group only included patients with a histological diagnosis of either UIP or NSIP. RESULTS: We achieved a correct diagnosis of NSIP in 86.6% of cases (76.4% sensitivity; 84.6% specificity), whereas UIP was correctly diagnosed in 73.3% of cases (84.6% sensitivity; 76.5% specificity). An 80% agreement was achieved between the HRCT and histological findings in the whole case series (73% sensitivity, 87% specificity, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The most important finding of our study was that a ground glass appearance equal to or greater than 15% is highly suggestive of NSIP. Therefore, our results could be useful to confirm a suggested diagnosis of NSIP
How Status Affects the Unconventionality of Opera Repertoires: Conflicting Criteria for Status Distinction, Aesthetic Conventionality and Repertoire Nonconformity in Italian Opera
In this paper, we examine how status affects cultural organizations’ willingness to challenge the dominant logic of status distinction in their field by raising the unconventionality of their repertoires. We hypothesize that opportunities for middle status organizations to improve their status position serve as strong incentives to violate dominant status-based expectations and raise the unconventionality of their repertoires. We also predict that the risks of status loss and commercial failure that stem from similar actions are major constraints upon the willingness of high and low status organizations to program unconventional operas. Concealing unconventional repertoires under conventional forms or visual appearances (aesthetic conventionality), however, increases their freedom by promoting the legitimacy of their offerings, thereby protecting their position in the status hierarchy from the social penalties that arise from repertoire unconventionality. A statistical analysis of Italian opera house repertoires from 2004 to 2011 strongly supports these hypotheses. This article examines how status affects the willingness of cultural organizations to challenge the dominant logic of status distinction in their field by raising the unconventionality of their repertoires. Privernum: l’edificio termale
