Poe's biopics : representations of the author in D.W. Griffith's Edgar Allen Poe and James Mcteigue's The raven
No full textLiterary biopics often reinforce romantic images regarding the creative process, emphasizing biographic and author-centered approaches to literature previously denounced by Roland Barthes (1977). Curiously, one of the most famous critics of such romantic conceptions, Edgar Allan Poe, has himself been a victim of this very same treatment, his literary production being taken as part and result of his controversial biography in a number of works. This article analyzes two biographical films, or biopics, about the renowned poet, D.W. Griffith’s Edgar Allen Poe (sic) (1909) and James McTeigue’s The Raven (2012). The analysis of these works indicates that both reinforce the merge of the artist’s life and oeuvre, as well as the blurring of borders between fact and fiction, author and character, high and mass culture, thus contributing to the characterization of the biopic as a fitting example of historiographic metafiction. (Hutcheon, 1988).Cinebiografias literárias frequentemente reforçam visões românticas quanto ao fazer artístico, reiterando a visão biografista e a centralidade do autor há muito denunciadas por Roland Barthes (1977). Curiosamente, um dos mais célebres críticos de tais concepções românticas, Edgar Allan Poe, viu-se vítima desse mesmo tratamento ao ter sua produção literária apropriada como parte e reflexo de sua controversa biografia em diversas obras. O presente artigo debruça-se sobre dois filmes biográficos, ou biopics, acerca do célebre poeta, Edgar Allen Poe (sic), de D.W. Griffith (1909), e O Corvo, de James McTeigue (2012). A análise das obras aponta que ambas reiteram a fusão entre vida e obrado artista, bem como o apagamento das fronteiras entre fato histórico e ficção, entre autor e personagem, alta cultura e cultura de massa, contribuindo para a caracterização do gênero biopic como um dos mais bem-acabados exemplos de metaficção historiográfica (Hutcheon, 1988)

Evaluation of an intravitreal fluocinolone acetonide implant versus standard systemic therapy in noninfectious posterior uveitis.
No full textPurpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of an intravitreal fluocinolone acetonide (FA) implant compared with standard therapy in subjects with noninfectious posterior uveitis (NIPU). Design: Randomized, controlled, phase 2b/3, open-label, multicenter superiority trial. Participants: Subjects with unilateral or bilateral NIPU. Methods: One hundred forty subjects received either a 0.59-mg FA intravitreal implant (n 66) or standard of care (SOC; n 74) with either systemic prednisolone or equivalent corticosteroid as monotherapy (0.2 mg/kg daily) or, if judged necessary by the investigator, combination therapy with an immunosuppressive agent plus a lower dose of prednisolone or equivalent corticosteroid (0.1 mg/kg daily). Main Outcome Measures: Time to first recurrence of uveitis. Results: Eyes that received the FA intravitreal implant experienced delayed onset of observed recurrence of uveitis (P0.01) and a lower rate of recurrence of uveitis (18.2% vs. 63.5%; P0.01) compared with SOC study eyes. Adverse events frequently observed in implanted eyes included elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) requiring IOP-lowering surgery (occurring in 21.2% of implanted eyes) and cataracts requiring extraction (occurring in 87.8% of phakic implanted eyes). No treatment-related nonocular adverse events were observed in the implant group, whereas such events occurred in 25.7% of subjects in the SOC group. Conclusions: The FA intravitreal implant provided better control of inflammation in patients with uveitis compared with systemic therapy. Intraocular pressure and lens clarity of implanted eyes need close monitoring in patients receiving the FA intravitreal implant

She tests and discusses the positive effects of Really New Stories on consumer understanding and attitudes and provides practical guidelines to put Really New Stories to work.
