No full textPara hablar de jazz, de jazz latino, de jazz latinoamericano, de jazz fusión, de jazz moderno o de cualquier otra categoría disponible para caracterizar la propuesta musical de este concierto, varias metáforas podrían traerse a colación; con todas las ganancias y los riesgos correspondientes. Quiero enfocarme en dos metáforas que, dicho sea de paso, no provienen de mi intuición literaria, sino que fueron sugeridas por dos personajes distintos a la sazón del encuentro renovado entre el jazz norteamericano y la música cubana en la década de 1940. La primera metáfora, propuesta por el trompetista de Carolina de Sur, Dizzy Gillespie, veía el jazz latino como una faena culinaria en la que los ingredientes más esenciales provenían de la cocina musical estadounidense. La contribución latina era comparable a la de un condimento exótico, sin duda muy influyente en el resultado final, pero subsidiario a los componentes de base en la receta. Para el percusionista cubano Chano Pozo, en cambio, lo que estaba pasando era más como un matrimonio: dos fuerzas culturales y musicales unidas para la posteridad, con el mismo nivel de participación y entrega a la hora de producir vástagos. Muchas décadas después de su tiempo, las jerarquías culturales en Estados Unidos, y en buena parte del planeta, siguen reproduciendo valores y estereotipos más alineados con la metáfora culinaria que con la matrimonial. Con todo, existen propuestas musicales que nos ayudan a concebir otras formas de pensar lo que es y puede ser el jazz, en especial en su trayectoria global.
Este concierto es una muestra de ello, al amparo de un pianista y compositor tan virtuoso como creativo. La música de Eugene Uman es un testimonio del potencial musical de capitalizar en los encuentros y desencuentros del jazz con otras músicas, en especial las músicas colombianas. Gestado a través de muchos de trabajo y de intercambios entre Estados Unidos y Colombia, se trata de un estilo musical que no solo combina elementos y sensibilidades estéticas de varias tradiciones distintas, sino que lo hace con un nivel de sofisticación y madurez artística a la altura de los mejores exponentes del género, hoy por hoy

Extension of the Diendorfer-Uman lightning return stroke model to the case of a variable upward return stroke speed and a variable downward discharge current speed
No full textA new lightning return stroke model has recently been proposed by Diendorfer and Uman (1990). In this model, if one specifies a current at the channel base (ground), a constant return stroke speed, and a channel discharge time constant, one can derive analytically the current and charge as a function of time and height associated with the channel above ground. Here we present a more general and more straightforward derivation of the Diendorfer-Uman model. In the new formulation we allow a variable return stroke speed that can be any arbitrary function of height. The influence of a decrease in speed with height, as occurs in nature, on the channel current and charge distributions and on the radiated electric and magnetic fields is determined and compared with the constant speed case. For a given channel base current, a decreasing speed with height does not change the initial peak electric and magnetic fields appreciably from the values found for a constant speed having the same value as the variable speed at the channel base, but a decreasing speed can cause considerable changes in field waveshapes for both the distant radiation fields and the near electrostatic fields. In addition to allowing an arbitrary return stroke speed, the new formulation of the Diendorfer-Uman model allows the downward propagating current waves released by the return stroke front also to have an arbitrary variable speed, whereas the original model assumed that speed to be constant at the speed of light.</p
