Two Versions of the Same Narrative – Astrid Lindgren’s Mio, min Mio in Swedish and Danish

    No full text
This article is in part a review of the literary qualities of the narrative tales written by the Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren and in part a comparative reading of the Swedish Mio, min Mio (Mio, my son) and its Danish translation from 1955. It will be shown how the Danish version has been adapted from the Swedish and how as a result the Danish version of the narrative does not have the same literary quality as the original.

'O sole mio, Umberto Giordano and a possible plagiarism

Plagiarism in music is a complicated subject, difficult to discuss also because of the legislative confusion that characterizes our age governed by copyright. Suffice it to say that in the juridical sphere the decisive proof of a musical plagiarism is often represented by the simple listening, or rather by the aesthetic emotional reaction that the suspected plagiarism is able to arouse. From a historical-musical perspective, the present article casts doubt on the originality of the refrain tune of ‘O sole mio (1898), one of the most famous songs ever. Its author, Eduardo Di Capua (assisted by another musician, Alfredo Mazzucchi, as a judge has established with a recent sentence), could actually have plagiarized a song (Canzon d’amor) that Umberto Giordano wrote for his verismo melodrama Mala vita (1892, then revised in 1897). A series of clues would prove it: the uncertain origins of ‘O sole mio, the collaborative methods of Di Capua and Mazzucchi, the common practice in the production of Neapolitan songs to copy other people’s works, the fact that Di Capua himself was already publicly accused of plagiarism for another of his 1895 songs. Above all, the plagiarism would be demonstrated by the musical analysis of the two pieces: the camouflage attempt made in ‘O sole mio, through a well-proven melodic construction technique, as regards the Canzon d’amor tune

    No full text
As part of his work on a new edition of Cantar de mio Cid, the author presents a sample of the verses 100-284 of the poem in a twofold synoptic version, with an interpretative text and a critical reconstruction. The first is true to the single manuscript and only corrects the copyist’s mistakes. The latter is based on the metric theory that was explained by the author in other essays, enriched by the resort to indirect tradition, usus scribendi, conformatio textus and the plot’s inner logic. The text is accompanied by philological notes

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 85-87).Given a set of target detections over several time periods, this paper addresses the multi-target tracking problem (MTT) of optimally assigning detections to targets and estimating the trajectory of the targets over time. MTT has been studied in the literature via predominantly probabilistic methods. In contrast to these approaches, we propose the use of mixed integer optimization (MIO) models and local search algorithms that are (a) scalable, as they provide near optimal solutions for six targets and ten time periods in milliseconds to seconds, (b) general, as they make no assumptions on the data, (c) robust, as they can accommodate missed and false detections of the targets, and (d) easily implementable, as they use at most two tuning parameters. We evaluate the performance of the new methods using a novel metric for complexity of an instance and find that they provide high quality solutions both reliably and quickly for a large range of scenarios, resulting in a promising approach to the area of MTT.by Zachary Clayton Saunders.S.M

    No full text
This article tackles the question of authorship in the Poema de mio Cid placing the poet in a monastery at the end of the twelfth century. The prayers that appear throughout the text show that the author was educated and devout, the characteristics of a clergyman. The knowledge of biblical events and the presence of words with their original Latin spellings in Jimena's prayer signal the ecclesiastical origins of the poem, probably in the monastery of Cardeña where the Cid was buried.

As part of his work on a new edition of Cantar de mio Cid, the author presents a sample of the first 99 verses of the poem in a twofold synoptic version, with an interpretative text and a critical reconstruction. The first is true to the single manuscript and only corrects the copyist’s mistakes. The latter is based on the metric theory that was explained by the author in other essays, enriched by the resort to indirect tradition, usus scribendi, conformatio textus and the plot’s inner logic. Maternal Parenting Style in Relation to Parenting Stress and Behavioral Outcomes in Japanese Children With and Without Autism

    No full text
This exploratory study sought to compare the parenting variables of parenting stress, perceived social support, and parenting styles among Japanese mothers of children with autism and without autism, and examine associations between children\u27s internalizing and externalizing behaviors and these variables. Results of independent t-tests revealed greater levels of parenting stress among mothers of children with autism and lower levels of social support. Parenting styles did not significantly differ between the groups. Regression analyses revealed that parenting stress uniquely predicted externalizing behaviors in children with autism. Additionally, an authoritarian parenting style was predictive of externalizing behaviors in children without autism. No meaningful associations were found between the parenting variables and the manifestation of internalizing behaviors. This study suggests that further examination of parenting stress and mental health among Japanese mothers of children with autism and a more comprehensive understanding of parenting behavior in Japan are warranted. Such information is important in service delivery and the future development of interventions that focus on both addressing parental needs and improving child outcomes
