Reisen als Grenzüberwindung?

On several layers, Fortunatus can be described as a liminal text. This does not only apply to the level of materiality or the readership of the novel but in particular to content and structure. Using an anthropological perspective and assessing the numerous transitions which the main protagonists, Fortunatus and his son Andolosia, undergo, this article demonstrates that these transitions ultimately result in the different outcomes for the two generations. In addition, the woodcuts of the text’s first edition undermine this reading through their arrangement. In conclusion, the structural order in combination with its figurative elaboration shape the character of the text as a negotiation of rites of passage

Bodleian Library, MS. Douce 367. Von Kupferstichen und Einbänden — Die Excerpta Chronicarum

No full text
The Excerpta Chronicarum is one prominent example of chronicles written in Nuremberg in the fifteenth century. The transmitted textual witnesses are closely related as can not only be seen from a palaeographical perspective but also by placing them in the context of binding production

21st-century scholarship and Wikipedia

Wikipedia, the world’s fifth most-used Web site, is a good illustration of the growing credibility of online resources. In his article in Ariadne earlier this year, “Wikipedia: Reflections on Use and Academic Acceptance”, Brian Whalley described the debates around accuracy and review, in the context of geology. He concluded that ‘If Wikipedia is the first port of call, as it already seems to be, for information requirement traffic, then there is a commitment to build on Open Educational Resources (OERs) of various kinds and improve their quality.’ In a similar approach to the Geological Society event that Whalley describes, Sarah Fahmy of JISC worked with Wikimedia and the British Library on a World War One (WWI) Editathon. There is a rich discourse about the way that academics relate to Wikipedia

Manifestation und Konstruktion von Frauenmystik. Prozessuales Schreiben in der oberdeutschen Überlieferung der Mechthild von Hackeborn

This thesis suggests a new methodological approach towards medieval mystical texts associated with a female author figure. Instead of a historical-critical method, it proposes adopting a perspective rooted in the individual manifestation that places the text within its cultural context within and outside the manuscript. The 'Liber specialis gratiae' by Mechthild of Hackeborn provides a case study due to its large transmission and its textual instability, resulting in a variety of functional usages. The distribution of manuscripts across a wide area offers insights into the way in which different monastic orders, monasteries, or even individual recipients read the text. Compared to texts transmitted only in a small number of manuscripts, the 'Liber specialis gratiae' therefore allows an examination of the different layers of reception. Passages of the text can be presented as prayer books, didactic manuals, hagiographic manuscripts as well as textual witnesses transmitting the 'Liber' as its only text. By rearranging different sections or just individual phrases, alternative ways of reading are offered. Simultaneously, the context of reception acquires significance, for example the way in which the manuscripts were produced, distributed, and kept within monasteries. The change from manuscript to print and its effect can also be observed, leading to differing manifestations. Moreover, the material offers insights into the fact that reception does not stop at the end of the manuscript era but continues into the period of printed editions and academic engagement with the text. Considering how Mechthild and the 'Liber' were perceived across time is therefore an integral part of this study

Kartäusische Gebetbücher. Zur Kohärenz von Bibliotheksordnungen in den Kartausen Basel und Erfurt

No full text
This article examines the metaphorical and literal position of prayer books within the Carthusian order and, more specifically, in the Charterhouses of Erfurt and Basel. By looking at the library catalogues of both institutions, the perspective will be directed at the revelations associated with the nuns of Helfta. Analysing their position in the library shelves as well as the way in which the works are indexed will provide insights into how these texts were read and perceived. Nowadays classified as ‘mystical’ texts, it can be seen that different versions of these texts can be situated within wider devotional contexts and cultures. Conversely, the intertwining perspective on institutional organisation and individual texts allows a more multi-faceted view on prayer books as a genre. Thus, the article highlights the importance of reception history within particular institutions, as their methods of categorisation and, following on that, perceptions of a text might display hitherto unknown incoherences and varieties. Books containing prayers are, due to their quantity, a promising starting point for further studies in this area

Power Relations and Social Classes in Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG: Reflection of Masculine Ideology

No full text
The study aims to explore power relations and social classes as the reflections of the masculine ideology of the author in the novel Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG. The theories implemented in the study are van Dijk’s power relations and social classes theory and Connell’s masculinity theory. The study is qualitative descriptive and applies the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method, used to dismantle the ideology that is produced and reproduced through the language within the novel. The research data are lingual units that indicate power relations and social classes which simultaneously reflect the notion of masculinity. The results of the study are as follows. First, Pariyem as the central character in the novel lives within a hierarchical and dualistic Javanese society. Her submission as the babu (housemaid) of a priyayi (noble) family does not only lead Pariyem to be dominated symbolically, but also legitimizes the priyayi (aristocrats) power over wong cilik (commoners). It is reinforced by the representations of the priyayis’ world views in terms of culture, aristocracy, bureaucracy, and education orientation. It shows that priyayis are culturally dominant. Secondly, since Pariyem is a character created by a male author, her behaviors and actions reflect the ideology of masculinity. Rather than voicing women, the power relations that Pariyem experiences through the events constructed in the novel show that she embodies the masculine ideology, or masculinity.

SponsorSHIP – En identifiering av kritiska faktorer vid titelsponsring.

Abstract Title: SponsorSHIP – an identification of critical factors for title sponsoring. Author: Linus Alenvret-Larsson, Calle Hökby & Kristoffer Thuresson Tutor: Carl R. Hellberg, Pavla Kruzela Purpose: To identify and analyse critical factors for title sponsoring of global itinerant sport events in the multimillion category. Method: The state of purpose for this thesis was formed after a broad research of present theory within the field of sponsorship. The choice for empirical research fell upon a single case study of the event Volvo Ocean Race, this was because the event is a unique concept of an itinerant global sport event. With a starting point in the wide array of empirical material that is obtainable with reference to the Race we also conducted two interviews, this was to make sure that the available information was accurate and up to date. With the narrow focus of the thesis and the single case study it will be hard to use the results for generalising upon sponsorship in a wider perspective. However, it is relevant to consider the future potential of the results. With a growing globalisation and a world economy that becomes increasingly integrated we see opportunities of an increase for events like the Volvo Ocean Race. Result: I n order to attain progress with sponsorship it is essential for companies to use all five critical factors in the authors extended model, Five motives to sponsorship. The extension of the model with the internal marketing factor is based on both theoretical and empirical sources. With the use of all five factors, association, exposure, relations, integrated marketing communication and internal marketing benefits of scale may be attained. If the sponsorship is used in accordance with surrounding activities that fulfil the motives stated above, a greater good can be created. Such benefits of scale along with integrated marketing may provide an increased credibility in the conveyed message. The point is, the greater the investment, and the greater the engagement is, more of the authors chosen benefits, change/improvement of image, attention, loyalty, credibility and pride within the internal organisation can be attained.

No full text
Companies like NCC are continuously working to find new and smart digital tools to facilitate building production. The problem is which tools to use and in what way they best benefit the production. In the project Angström Stage 4, NCC has decided not to use traditional paper drawings from the architect and other disciplines, but start working with digital drawings. Large touchscreens with software applications such as Bluebeam with hyperlinks on digital drawings will be used for work preparation in the project. Through an interview study, the author has investigated the advantages, disadvantages and prerequisites of this new working method as well as the personal attitude towards a more digitized building production in the project. The author could establish that the working method with the digital tools that NCC decided to work with will probably benefit the building production in a positive way. The tools are generally considered making it easier, more fun and more understandable when it comes to accomplish a work preparation. It will probably create major time savings as programs make it more efficient to navigate and work, provided that NCC takes the prerequisites into account. The prerequisites are a requirement to successfully implement this method. NCC needs to be involved early in projects. One or more skilled and driving people need to be involved in the project and work with the technology. A new working methodology there management of drawings digitally needs to be established. Education and a learning period need to be considered. These are the prerequisites for this work method the author managed to obtain through the investigation. The recommendations for NCC for development and improvement are a lot about the prerequisites. The author also believes that the method can be developed by continuing work and focusing on the development of how the information will be conveyed from the work preparation to the construction site using digital tools. Keywords: Work preparation, digitization, building productio

The Sociolinguistics of Academic Publishing

No full text
This book presents a sociolinguistics of academic publishing from an historical and contemporary perspective. Using Swedish academia as a case study, it focuses on publishing practices within history and psychology. The author demonstrates how new regimes of research evaluation and performance-based funding are impinging on university life. His central argument, following the French sociologist Bourdieu, is that the trend towards publishing in English should be understood as a social strategy, developed in response to such transformations. Thought-provoking and challenging, this book will interest students and scholars of sociolinguistics, language planning and language policy, research policy, sociology of science, history and psychology.</p
