"Put your own house in order first": local perceptions of EU influence on Romani integration policies in the Czech Republic

    Get PDF
This article examines the influence of the European Union (EU) on the development and implementation of Romani integration policy in the Czech Republic from the perspective of those responsible for policy delivery. Based on analysis of key policy documents and research conducted in the Czech Republic, this article first examines how Romani integration became a more important issue during membership negotiations and then discusses how the criticism of the European Commission's Regular Reports was received by those responsible for implementing pro-Romani policies. Finally, the paper assesses how the status of full EU membership has impacted on integration policy. The article concludes that while funding for Romani integration projects has benefitted some groups, the overall impression of the EU is of a remote institution, quick to criticise and unwilling to practise what it preaches

This paper discusses the position of Romani minorities in the light of the state dissolution and further citizenship regime transformations after the disintegration of the former Socialist Yugoslavia. While observing closely the repositioning of the Romani minorities in the post-Yugoslav space, it explicates that in the case of state dissolution, the unevenness of citizenship does not only manifest in the rights dimension, but also in uneven access to citizenship with regard to new polities

Narrative threads: ethnographic tourism, Romani tourist tales, and fiber art

This thesis examines the need for the ethnographer to process their own emotions and experiences as part of the ethnographic experience. Specifically, it argues for the credibility of artistic expression resulting from fieldwork. Drawing on the author’s experience during the 2012 inaugural "Romani Music, Culture, and Human Rights" study abroad program at the University of Pittsburgh, this thesis offers an analysis of five works of fiber art. Originally perceived by the author as separate from the thesis writing process, they became an integral part of thesis once they were recognized as the non-verbal processing of the my emotional response to events abroad and, therefore, essential components of the research process. I argue that emotional processing is an integral part of writing an ethnography, for as the ethnographer works through their experiences, their understanding of the events changes, and this in turn impacts the ways in which the ethnographic is perceived and analyzed

    Romani Liberation

    Get PDF
Centered on the trajectory of the emancipation of Roma people in Scandinavia, Romani Liberation is a powerful challenge to the stereotype describing Romani as passive and incapable of responsibility and agency. The author also criticizes benevolent but paternalistic attitudes that center on Romani victimhood. The first part of the book offers a comprehensive overview of the chronological phases of Romani emancipation in Sweden and other countries. Underscoring the significance of Roma activism in this process, Jan Selling profiles sixty Romani activists and protagonists, including numerous original photos. The narrative is followed by an analysis of the concepts of historical justice and of the process of decolonizing Romani Studies. Selling highlights the impact of the historical contexts that have enabled or impeded the success of the struggles against discrimination and for equal rights, emphasizing Romani activism as a precondition for liberation. The particular Swedish framework is accentuated by a stimulating preface by the international activist Nicoleta Bitu, and afterwords by two prominent Romani advocates, the politician Soraya Post and the singer, author, and elder Hans Caldaras

Popularna kultura i konstrukcija ženskog identiteta: ženski časopisi i ljubavni romani u (post)socijalizmu

    Get PDF
Kate Mitchell (Okajani grijesi i Izigrana nevjesta).

The Romani Archives and Documentation Center: A Migratory Archive?

    Get PDF
The purpose of this review is to outline the history of the Romani Archives and Documentation Center (RADOC), its origin, mission, function, and what sets it apart from other archives in the world. Ian Hancock, emeritus professor at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) and author of The Pariah Syndrome (1987) and We Are the Romani People (2002), initiated the collection and was responsible for its organization and preservation for the last 50 years. Due to Hancock’s recent retirement, RADOC will soon move from Texas to Turkey. It seems appropriate to reflect on this unique collection through Rodrigo Lazo’s concept of the migratory archive. RADOC differs from hegemonic national archives because it represents a heterogeneous group of people dispersed throughout the world who speak different languages. Romani history has been largely written by outsiders, but the experience of Roma has also been recorded through other means, including literature and music. Regardless of the format, RADOC is committed to preserving the diversity of Romani voices. It is crucial that new generations of Romani and nonRomani scholars fight for the conservation of this archive and the preservation of Romani history

L’area alpina centro-orientale negli storici romani

    No full text

Atti diplomatici romani, 338-270 a.C. Cronologia e contesto storico

The main subject is the analysis of Roman diplomatic acts stipulated during the Roman conquest of Italy. These acts are mainly foedera, paces, societates and amicitiae, with their Greek equivalents. Starting from the systematic analysis of diplomatic acts, I have argued that Roman diplomatic action led to the conquest of Italy as much as military action. Moreover, Roman diplomatic action in the Italian political landscape was different from other powers; subsequently, Roman diplomatic acts (as far as we can notice) were much elaborated. Finally, many sources thought to be incoherent acquire sense if they are read within a diplomatic analysis. My conclusions concern Roman geopolitical and diplomatic strategy between the IV and III centuries BC. The Romans used diplomacy as a tool of conquest. They were sophisticated in redacting diplomatic acts, carefully choosing clauses and words, and they used them to promote Roman presence among other Italic peoples, widening their diplomatic horizon. With diplomacy, the Romans took contact with many political presences among Italic and Italiote peoples; they made peace, moving onto other wars; they provoked useful wars for them; they made alliances that provided also military enlargements for the Roman army; they colonized territories; they carefully kept an eye on the powers that were not yet under their dominion
