CSR perception and financial performance: Evidences from Italian and UK asset management companies

This work fits into a stream of research dealing with the role of the Internet and social networks as effective disclosure tools. We argue that the asset management company's (AMC) self‐presentation, its product disclosure, and how it communicates in the social media can be positively associated to its performance. In this paper we have studied these relationships on 21 Italian and UK AMCs in the EUROSIF Panel by adopting an experimental study asking business ethics course university students to evaluate the AMCs' ethical commitment. Our research shows that a high corporate social performance (CSP) disclosure through Web and social media is positively associated to AMCs' economic performance. Even a high perceived coherency between AMCs' self‐presentation and ethical financial product communication can enhance AMCs' financial success. In reverse, a high perceived coherency between financial products and corporate social responsibility communication through Web and social media networks does not seem to improve AMCs' economic performance

Corporate Sustainability Assessment and Risk Perception: Empirical Evidences from Standard & Poor’s Index

Over last years, responsibility and sustainability issues have become a corporate asset able to enhance firms’ market value and, at the same time, meeting stakeholders’ needs. The additional information in regards to corporate social and environmental commitment has been disclosed on listed markets, implying a lower asymmetry between investors and firms. As a consequence, investments uncertainty has been decreasing through this non financial information which has made investors’ capital allocation more responsible. This paper investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility and sustainability on investors’ risk perception according to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) paradigm. We focused on a double risk measurement - systematic and idiosyncratic - developing an empirical study on 77 companies listed on Standard & Poor’s index and belonging to “Consumer Discretionary” industry cluster. Empirical findings highlight that an overall ESG assessment affects positively investors’ risk perception, although - in some cases - this effect is partially balanced by the single assessments Environmental, Social, and Governance

Diversity Management in Academic Business Venturing: Empirical Evidences from Italian Universities

Academic management could be seen as a significant factor in exploiting university intellectual property through a business venture. Although several studies recognized entrepreneurial abilities and skills as key drivers of start-up economic success in high-technology sectors, only a few of them focused on academic start-ups performance considering the top management composition. Accordingly, the aim of this work was to investigate the impact of diversity management on academic start-ups financial performance, focusing on academic members in board of directors from a resource-based perspective. In particular, we carried out a cross-sectional analysis bordering our study to 136 university spin-offs established in southern Italy. Our findings showed that diversity management in academic business venturing increases the economic performance of university spin-offs. Specifically, a well-diversified academic top management according to functional diversity as well as academic position impacts positively on academic start-ups economic growth while scientific background heterogeneity seems to lower the economic performance

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
