Azade-Ayse Rorlich, Which way will Tatar culture go ? A controversial essay by Galimdzhan Ibragimov. The present article discusses G. Ibragimov's essay Which way will Tatar culture go ? which demonstrates his awareness of the historical traditions, peculiarities of the Volga Tatars as well as the need to preserve and develop the national identity in the future. Since in his essay Ibragimov posed two alternatives for the future of Tatar culture: russification or survival, the author of this article concentrated around the same issue, comparing Ibragimov's theses with those of other Tatar intellectuals concerned with the future of the Tatar nation. Ibragimov considered the national language as the main ingredient of a national culture and the present article discusses his struggle around this issue as well as his belief that the future of the Tatar culture depended upon the future of the Tatar language. The attacks of September 11th have consequently established an association between terrorism and immigration and have favoured the idea of national security, which led to questioning the allegiance of citizens from a foreign origin towards the United-States. Ayse Ceyhan analyses the effects of the attacks on the image of the American multicultural identity. The author shows in this article that the fear of an infiltrated terrorism has become the main security preoccupation. Nevertheless, the quest for an increased surveillance of suspect individuals and groups and the measures that have been adopted are not new

Biological pathways represent a critical level of biological organization and understanding of biochemical pathways is identified as key to future advances in biological sciences (Schaefer, 2004). The overall goal of this thesis is to develop a pathway based approach that integrates different aspects of biological pathways, specifically the structure and the dynamics of a pathway in order to characterize cells’ behavior. Our objectives are to asses structural and functional cross-species comparison of pathways (Chapter 2), to formulate a reliable pathway activity metric based on gene expression data (Chapter 3), to demonstrate that our pathway activity formulation can predict the underlying dynamics (Chapter 4) and finally to demonstrate that the pathway activity formulation can identify cell’s response to a stimulant (Chapter 5). Chapter 3-5 present how a significant pathway can be identified. Then, cross-species comparison of pathways (Chapter 2) can be used. Note that we could have Chapter 2 and Shapter 5 swapped for a more fluent flow. Neverthless, we present the chapters in this order for a better read. In Chapter 2, we propose an improvement of the reaction alignment method, emerged as the most successful pathway comparison method, by accounting for sequence similarity in addition to reaction alignment method. Using nine species, including human and some model organisms and test species, we evaluate the standard and improved comparison methods by analyzing glycolysis and citrate cycle pathways conservation. In addition, we demonstrate how organism comparison can be conducted by accounting for the cumulative information retrieved from nine pathways in central metabolism as well as a more complete study involving 36 pathways common in all nine species. In Chapter 3, we explore an extension of the pathway activity methodology which entails singular value decomposition (SVD) of the expression data of the genes constituting a given pathway. We show that pathway analysis enhances our ability to detect relevant changes in pathway activity using synthetic data. In addition, we illustrate that pathway activity formulation should be coupled with a significance analysis to distinguish significant information from random deviations. In Chapter 4, we perform an unsupervised pathway level analysis, based on the formulation presented in Chapter 3, on a rich time series of transcriptional profiling in rat liver. The over-represented five specific patterns of pathway activity levels, which cannot be explained by random events, exhibit circadian rhythms. The identification of the circadian signatures at the pathway level identify pathways related to energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism and DNA replication and protein synthesis, which are biologically relevant in rat liver. In Chapter 5, we demonstrate that our pathway activity formulation enables us to detect relevant changes in pathways due to in utero di-butyl-phthalate (DBP) exposure. Our findings suggest that the pathways that produce precursors to cholesterol synthesis exhibit more significant change compared to the rest of the affected pathways. In addition, pathway activity levels of certain biological functions accompany testosterone decrease, which is the critical event for male reproductive developmental effects of DBP, such as steroid hormone metabolism and biosynthesis of steroids.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Ayse Meric Ovaci

The present study, The Pilgrimage Center of St. Symeon the Younger: Designed by angels, supervised by a saint, constructed by pilgrims, evaluates the architectural characteristics of the building complex built around the column of St. Symeon the Younger at Wondrous Mountain/Antioch (Turkey) from different perspectives. The main focus remains on the architectural development of the site throughout the sixth century, although available archaeological and textual data concerning the preceding and successive periods is briefly presented. A full account of the state of the site at present is given in Chapter 2. This chapter is a detailed documentation of the remains and is strictly descriptive in nature. The historical sources are introduced and discussed in Chapter 3. The goal of this section is to elucidate the historical context under which the site was constructed and flourished. The focus is essentially the sixth century, while the later periods are presented cursorily. In Chapter 4, I discuss and reconstruct the development of the building complex. The section aims at establishing a clearer picture of each building phase. This process also involves contextualizing the architectural features and design decisions within each period whenever possible, while reconsidering the historical discussions presented in the previous chapter. Chapter 5 discusses how the site should be reconsidered in light of other examples of the Early Byzantine period. To do this, I compare the site of St. Symeon the Younger with other stylite sites, especially the Syrian ones, as well as with other pilgrimage centers of the period. Finally, I propose that the complex at Wondrous Mountain was originally an unconventional pilgrimage site in the sixth century, because of the need to establish a site appropriate for a living and immobile saint who is active in liturgical practices. Towards the end of the saint’s life, the site was prepared for the aftermath of his death and it was transformed into a site including a new veneration route to its south.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2017-05-01The student, Ayse Henry, accepted the attached license on 2015-04-23 at 04:38.The student, Ayse Henry, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2015-04-23 at 04:54.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2015-04-23 at 15:37.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #8047 on 2015-07-22 at 14:26:22Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T22:46:01Z (GMT). DEFINING A CHRISTIAN VIRTUE IN THE ISLAMIC CONTEXT: THE CONCEPT OF GRATITUDE IN ELIAS OF NISIBIS' KITAB DAF AL-HAMM

    No full text
The eleventh-century Nestorian cleric Elias of Nisibis' (d. 1046) Kitab daf al-hamm (The Book of Elimination of Grief) provides a strategy for readers to deal with unwanted sorrow and help them to attain moral perfection. This article focuses on an unstudied part of Daf al-hamm, the virtue of gratitude, which constitutes the second chapter of the book. Analyzing the content, structure, and language, this article intends to determine how gratitude is defined and promoted in the text and the ways in which the author engaged with the surrounding Islamic culture. Throughout the chapter, Elias employs traditional Islamic material, from Sufi sources to hadith quotations, to encourage his Christian audience to attain gratitude. This implies a high level of integration of the author and his Christian readers in the surrounding Islamic culture

WOS: 000439087100032Polyphenol oxidase enzymes (PPOs) obtained from Agseftali (Prunus persica L.), which was native peach genotypes under Igdir province ecological condition in Turkey, was purified by affinity chromatography and then, PPOs immobilized on new matrix antimony doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb) thin films by adsorption method for the first time. In here, the films were synthesized by spray pyrolysis technique in laboratory condition, easily. The immobilization of PPOs onto SnO2:Sb thin films was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Obtained free and immobilized PPOs onto thin film were compared according to some enzyme optimization points such as optimum pH and temperature. The optimum pH of the free and immobilized PPOs was found as 6.0. The optimum temperature of PPOs increased from 20 degrees C to 30 degrees C with immobilization on the thin film. Km values of the free and immobilized enzymes were obtained as 2 mM and 1.4 mM, respectively. L-Tyrosine oxidation of the enzymes enhanced with immobilization of PPOs onto SnO2:Sb thin films. The immobilization on SnO2:Sb thin films aslo provided to increase the satibilty and life time of the PPOs because they could be used 3 times and retained approximately 50% of activity following 18 repeated usage in a 15 days. The PPOs can be thougt as an activist towards 4-methylcatechol substrate and, the usability of the enzymes can be significantly increased via immobilization onto SnO2:Sb thin films

Physiological and molecular responses of immature cucumber seed under after-ripening treatments

    No full text
<p>Seed maturation, which involves a number of physiological and molecular events, is a crucial and intricate process in plant production. Since immature seeds can pose significant problems for both growers and producers, it is necessary to harvest them at the right maturity stage when seed viability and vigour are at their highest. Nevertheless, in the contemporary era, seed producers are compelled to engage in off-season productions in order to meet the rising demands of the market. This has led to the seeds being harvested before they reached full maturity. Considering the problems faced by the seed producers, the present study was designed to stimulate a model for seed maturation by leveraging combinations of moisture, temperature, and treatment time in two hybrid cucumber varieties harvested 40 days after anthesis in the autumn season through after-ripening treatments. Following treatments, a series of physiological, biochemical and molecular analyses were conducted in order to ascertain the efficacy of the treatments under consideration. In this context, the efficacy of the applications was evaluated not only by assessing seed viability and vigour, but also by examining the role of certain hydrolytic enzymes and endogenous hormone levels at the physiological and molecular levels in seed maturation. Accordingly, after-ripening treatments have contributed to the maturation of cucumber seeds, resulting in an increase of up to 110 % and 156 % in both total and normal germination rates, respectively. Furthermore, these treatments have been shown to provide up to 56 % faster germination. In addition, there was a notable enhancement in the endo-beta-mannanase enzyme activity, which was found to be correlated with the expression of the CsMAN2 gene during the maturation process. Concerning the responses of the endogenous hormones, it was observed that abscisic acid (ABA) levels decreased with treatments, whereas indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid (SA) levels showed an increase. Concerning the correlation analysis, endo-beta-mannanase enzyme positively correlated with viability parameters (r = 0.859 and r = 0864, P < 0.001) and negatively correlated with ABA hormone (r = 0.666, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the expression levels of the seed maturation genes CsSm1 and CsMAN2 were found to increase with the application of the treatments, while the expression levels of the CsABI3 and CsDOG1 genes were observed to decrease. Although temperature-related variations have been observed during the growing period of plants, the responses of seeds to after-ripening treatments have yielded intriguing results under different conditions.</p&gt
