The article focuses on Giambattista Biffi (1736-1807), an Enlightenment nobleman and thinker of Cremona, member of the Accademia dei Pugni, and on the analysis of his unpublished autograph Racconti morali ad uso d’un fanciullo, held in the State Library of Cremona. These novellas were written with a pedagogical purpose for Daniele Ala, firstborn of Biffi’s friend marquis Gian Francesco Ala. After considering the family’s background and the historical context in which the novellas were composed – the period of the Habsburg reforms – the author dates them and identifies the press sources, both Italian and foreign, from which Biffi based the plot of the stories. Finally, she analyses the inspiring Enlightenment theory of virtue, seen as social utility for people’s wellbeing and happiness.L’articolo verte sulla figura dell’illuminista cremonese Giambattista Biffi (1736-1807), membro dell’Accademia dei Pugni, e sull’analisi dei suoi Racconti morali ad uso d’un fanciullo, autografi e inediti, conservati nella Biblioteca Statale di Cremona.
The constitutional debate ongoing in the south of the Italian peninsula during the « nonimestre » had been deep and intellectuals such as Filippo Maria Pagano, a career military person and author of remarkable Istoria del Regno di Napoli. Pagano’s Osservazioni alla Costituzione Spagnuola, published in 1820, focused on some critical aspects of the « reception » of the Constitution of Cadiz and insisted on a specificities of the Neapolitan context, retrieving the criticism by Vincenzo Cuoco to the Francesco Mario Pagano’s Progetto di Costituzione for the 1799 Neapolitan Republic. The study aims to explain in the major events leading to the grant of the Cadiz Constitution by King Ferdinand I ; then after a brief report on the parliamentary debate, it will focus on the Pagano’s Osservazion
The Poetics of Marām al-Maṣrī
The Siryan poet Maram al-Maṣri, is a versatile author and courageous innovator in modern arabic poetry. The paper presents a study of the poetic work of one of an interesting author in the panorama of contemporary Arabic poetry. Maram al-Maṣri migrated many decades ago In France where she actually lives. A woman of great courage who deals with the issues of women freedom. Author of several poetic collections, she devoted much of her commitment to the dissemination of her ideas on the emancipation of women. Recently, she has been at the forefront of the protests against the civil war in her country. Her poetics show great ability in presenting a new reading of classical themes using a language particularly simple and strongly rhythmic
The essay explores the figure of Martino Buonocore and his main work, the renovation of the Carafa della Spina palace in Naples. For this work, executed in the 18th century, there have been conflicting interpretations, which tend to attribute its conception to Ferdinando Sanfelice. This hypothesis has been completely debunked by the investigation of primary sources. Crucial to Buonocore’s production is the family collaboration and the sharing of labour in his father Filippo's studio; the latter was the author of the magnificent 18th-century renovation of the palace in Corigliano. Martino was the author of the church of Santa Maria Verticoeli in Naples and had a 20-year commission for the Certosa di Padula. He worked for a long time with Gennaro Maria Carafa, who was to work on the Posillipo casino and the San Domenico palace. This last work will consolidate the long professional and friendly relationship between the prince and the architect.
Review the latest translation of an anthology Seneca dell'esistenzialista Spanish Maria Zambrano. The anthology is prefaced by an essay in which the author emphasizes the independence of the wise Seneca by external events, and his tireless fight for freedom of thought

Through an analysis of the works The thinking reed by Rebecca West and Mysljascij trostnik by Nina Berberova, the author aims to reveal the two writers’ common pattern; if, on the one hand The thinking reed raises the question of gender equality in society, on the other Mysljascij trostnik is clearly a woman’s claim on the dignity of human beings. The author suggests that the choice of the same title (the Russian mysljascij trostnik means exactly ‘thinking reed’ in English) recalls Blaise Pascal’s well- known Think . If this is out of the question regarding West, even in Berberova’s short novel, whose title has always been thought to be derived from Tjutcev’s famous poem Est in arundineis modulatio musica ripis, (in which the poet re-elaborates the subject of the French philosopher’s pensée), one cannot avoid linking it to an immediate suggestion drawn from Pascal
Calcium Looping for Thermochemical Storage: Assessment of Intrinsic Reaction Rate and Estimate of Kinetic/Transport Parameters for Synthetic CaO/Mayenite Particles from TGA Data
Mayenite-supported CaO represents an affordable and safetycompliant candidate material for thermochemical storage processes. We here analyze the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) performance of synthetic CaO/mayenite micrometric powder under carbonatation/calcination looping and develop a model to interpret and analyze the experimental results. In the experimental campaign, calcination is run at 900 degrees C, while the carbonatation temperature is varied between 600 and 800 degrees C. For the carbonatation reaction, a generalized shrinking core model assuming a thermodynamically consistent first-order kinetic and a conversion-dependent diffusivity of CO2 inside the porous CaCO3 layer is validated through TGA carbonatation tests conducted with CO2/N-2 mixtures at different compositions. Interestingly, the kinetic constant of this reaction is found to be relatively insensitive to the temperature in the interval considered. In contrast, diffusion-limited regimes are never found for the calcination reaction so that this phase of the cycle can be predicted based on a single kinetic constant of the heterogeneous reaction. This constant is found to follow the typical Arrhenius-type dependence on temperature. Sizably different kinetic and transport parameters are obtained in the first carbonation performed on virgin CaO/mayenite particles with respect to those associated with subsequent cycles. When different parameters are afforded for the first and following cycles, the shrinking core model proposed closely predicts the TGA data over five CaO/CaCO3 cycles. The results found constitute an essential preliminary piece of information for designing equipment geometry and operating conditions of industrial-scale reactors. In this respect, knowledge of the parameters defining the intrinsic reaction rates and diffusive transport is essential in defining the optimal conversion of the material associated with minimal looping time
The paper presents the discovering of an oral archive. Anna Maria Bruzzone’s book Ci chiamavano matti. Voci da un ospedale psichiatrico (Einaudi, Torino 1979) contains the testimonies of thirty-seven patients of the Arezzo psychiatric hospital collected in 1977. The book testimonies the patients’ miserable lives inside and outside the hospital and sheds light on the atrocity of their everyday condition by letting them speak for themselves. The author wrote it after a two-month stay in Arezzo, when she spent almost every day in the hospital, attending the general meetings and participating to the lives of the inpatients, in a continuous dialogue of which only a part is collected in the published interviews. The oral recordings on which the book is based were believed to be lost forever. After long and strenuous search I have been able to locate the original tapes. Such discovery is of great magnitude, because the digitisation and cataloguing of this archive would produce the first digital oral archive related to an Italian psychiatric hospital – which was located in the same buildings of my Department (Department of Educational Sciences, Human Sciences and Intercultural Communication of the University of Siena – Arezzo) where also the Historical Archive of the Arezzo psychiatric hospital is hosted
