    No full text
Backgrounds: Researchers have stated that internet has both positive and negative features just like all the other information technology tools. The most important example to give of the negative outcomes is peer-to-peer cyber bullying. The most general definition of peer-to-peer cyber bullying is to harm individuals deliberately and repetitively through electronic media. Methods: The survey study was conducted in Istanbul Bilgi University Law School, Istanbul Ticaret University Law School and Marmara University Law School by the students to the faculties' students. All results were evaluated with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social for Sciences). Results: 579 persons in the range of 18-30 years were included in the survey. A total of 346 (59.8%) cases were cyberbullied on electronic media. 20.7% stated that they were disturbed through internet, 27.7% by mobile phone and 51.7% both by internet and mobile phone. 80% of those who have been exposed to violence through electronic means have been found to be exposed to more than one form of violence. Conclusions: More than half of our subjects have notified that they have been negatively affected by cyber violence. Prevention strategies should be created as well as the recognition of cyber bullying. (C) 2011 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of temporalis muscle-fascia graft, fresh and cryopreserved human amniotic membrane as an interpositional material in preventing temporomandibular joint ankylosis in a rabbit model. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 21 New Zealand white rabbits were used. The condyle and the joint disc were removed to induce ankylosis in left TMJs. Reconstruction was immediately performed with temporalis muscle-fascia graft (tMFG) in group I (n = 7), fresh human amniotic membrane (fHAM) in group II (n = 7) and cryopreserved human amniotic membrane (cHAM) in group III (n = 7). All rabbits were sacrificed at 3 months after the operation. The comparison was made among three groups by means of vertical mouth opening and weight measurements, radiologic and histologic findings obtained before and after surgery. Results: In all rabbits, there was no statistically significant difference in the jaw movements and weight among groups at commencement and 3 months after surgery. The condylar surfaces were more irregular in HAM groups. There were mild osteophyte formations, sclerosis, fibrosis and calcification around the condyle in all groups however the joint gap was more preserved in group I. All interpositional materials were also seen to be partially present in the joint gap at 3 months. Ankylosis was not seen in the joint gap in any group. Conclusion: With the results of this study it was concluded that interpositional arthroplasty with HAM and tMFG have an almost similar effect in preventing TMJ ankylosis after discectomy in the rabbit model. Therefore, magnesium alloys without aluminum that can withstand higher operating temperatures are of interest to the automotive industry. The objective of this work is to develop Al-free Mg alloys for industrial applications. In the current work, four types of alloys were produced with varying La contents. The high-pressure die casting method was selected to overcome the problems inherent in the gravity casting method with respect to the production of parts with complex shapes and thin walls. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the base alloy (Mg-5Sn wt%) comprises of alpha-Mg and Mg2Sn phases whereas La containing alloys included intermetallic phases such as LaMg3, Mg17La2, and La5Sn3. Corresponding grain sizes of the alloys with La are lower than those of the Mg5Sn alloy. Due to this lower grain size and emerging dispersoids, the tensile strength of the Mg5Sn4La alloy (205 MPa) is roughly double that of Mg5Sn. Moreover, the addition of the 4% wt. La to the Mg5Sn alloys led to an increase in yield strength and ductility by 25% and 50%, respectively

In the study, seed coat color, seed shape, seed coat surface, plant color (leaf color), flower color, plant growth type, color and shape formations on the seed coat and seed throwing, characteristics were defined. In the hybrid lines in the F5- F8 generations, the color of the seed coat changed from black to light cream, and the colors were predominantly brown and its tones. In all populations, the seed shapes of the lines were pea-like. Dark green in plant color is dominant over other color tones. The most purple and white flower colors were observed in the lines. Different colorations were determined on the surface of the seed coat and in the embryo, and these were defined as lace shape, leopard pattern, bone-like seed coat surfaces

Giving money to the poor: the political payoffs of allocating conditional cash transfers in Turkey

    No full text
This dissertation analyzes the political consequences of the Conditional Cash Transfer program (CCT) in Turkey, The purpose is three-fold: first, to investigate the political incentives and payoffs that motivate policymakers to adopt CCTs; second, to test whether political or technocratic criteria explain the allocation of CCTs in Turkey, and third, to examine whether conditionally transferring cash to the poor empowers poor citizens, or produces/reproduces pressure on the poor to reciprocate by supporting the political party that made the cash transfer. My research draws on six months of fieldwork conducted in Malkara, Tekirdağ (with Roma beneficiaries) and Diyarbakır (with Kurdish beneficiaries), and on regression analysis of original district level data on the allocation of CCTs. I reach three primary conclusions. First, the adoption of CCTs under the coalition government, influenced and pushed by the World Bank, led to a relatively strict formulation of the social assistance scheme in Turkey, which provides a promising attempt to make a transition to programmatic social policy. Second, although on balance, social and economic indicators guide the distribution of funds, Kurdish districts appear to receive favorable treatment. Third, due to the lack of CCTs requirements for increased social participation and active social engagement on the part of beneficiaries, the CCT program does not have a transformative impact on the enhancement of citizenship and the empowerment of women for both the Kurdish and Roma communities. Rather, more politicized groups, such as the Kurdish people, view the benefit as their social right due to state’s inefficiency in creating jobs in the eastern part of Turkey and their uneasy relations with the state. Among less politicized groups, such as the Roma people, the program triggers feelings of gratitude and appreciation to the politicians providing this program, especially Prime Minister Erdoğan.Ph. The effects of catechol-O-methyltransferase single nucleotide polymorphisms on positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene is thought to have an important role in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia, but there are conflicting results regarding its role in clinical presentation. We aimed to elucidate the relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the COMT gene and the severity of positive and negative symptoms. In order to investigate the relationship, the PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were screened for eligible articles. Thirty-eight studies, including 4443 adult patients with schizophrenia, were included in the quantitative analyses, and four studies were qualitatively assessed. Quantitative analyses were performed for acutely ill and clinically stable patient subgroups regarding the different genotypes of rs4680 SNP. Our results showed that the severity of negative symptoms was higher in patients who were rs4680 Met homozygous compared to Val/Met heterozygotes only in acutely ill samples. There was no other significant difference between genotypes. Meta-regression did not reveal any significant moderator effect on the difference in negative symptoms. General psychopathology, positive, negative, and total psychotic symptom levels also were similar between Val homozygotes and Met carriers. Nonetheless, there are some limitations in the study. First, SNPs except for rs4680 were under-researched because of the limited number of studies. Second, high heterogeneity across studies was the main concern. Our results suggested that the COMT rs4680 Met allele was associated with higher levels of negative symptoms within acutely ill patients. Future studies should focus on specific patient subgroups to reveal the moderating effects of SNPs
