Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Honey dressing versus paraffin tulle gras following toenail surgery

Objective: Anecdotal reports suggest that certain honey dressings have a positive effect on wound healing. However, there is limited empirical evidence supporting its use. This double-blind randomised controlled trial investigated the effect of a honey dressing on wound healing following toenail surgery with matrix phenolisation. \ud Method: Participants (n=100) were randomly assigned to receive either an active manuka honey dressing (n=52) or paraffin-impregnated tulle gras (n=48). The primary outcome was time (days) taken for complete re-epithelialisation of the nail bed. \ud Results: Mean healing times were 40.30 days (SD 18.21) for the honey group and 39.98 days \ud (SD 25.42) for the paraffin tulle gras group. Partial avulsion wounds healed statistically significantly faster (p=0.01) with paraffin tulle gras (19.62 days, SD 9.31) than with the honey dressing (31.76 days, SD 18.8), but no significant difference (p=0.21) was found following total avulsion when comparing honey (45.28 days, SD 18.03.) with paraffin tulle gras dressings (52.03 days, SD 21.3). \ud Conclusion: The results suggest that patients may benefit more from paraffin tulle gras dressings than honey dressings following partial toenail avulsion. No statistically significant difference was found for healing times after total toenail avulsion, although the marginal benefit of the honey dressing on these healing times warrants further investigation

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Uma Úlcera de Difícil Cicatrização: Um Caso Exuberante de Dermatite de Contacto Alérgica ao L-Mesitran® Tulle

L-Mesitran Tulle® is a popular non-adherent polyethylene dressing impregnated with the patented L-Mesitran Soft gel that contains Medilan™, which is said to be a “hypoallergenic lanolin”. Lanolin is a well know sensitizer and the prevalence of contact allergy to lanolin alcohols varies from 0.6% - 6.9%. We report the case of a patient who develop eczema around the leg ulcer while using L-Mesitran Tulle® as a wound dressing, highlighting that even this “high purity medical grade of lanolin” (Medilan™) contained in L-Mesitran Tulle® can cause an allergic contact dermatitis.O L-Mesitran Tulle® é um penso não aderente de polietileno popular, impregnado com o gel L-Mesitran Soft patenteado que contém Medilan™, considerada uma "lanolina hipoalergénica".

This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

Mining e-mail content for author identification forensics

    No full text
We describe an investigation into e-mail content mining for author identification, or authorship attribution, for the purpose of forensic investigation. We focus our discussion on the ability to discriminate between authors for the case of both aggregated e-mail topics as well as across different email topics. An extended set of e-mail document features including structural characteristics and linguistic patterns were derived and, together with a Support Vector Machine learning algorithm, were used for mining the e-mail content. Experiments using a number of e-mail documents generated by different authors on a set of topics gave promising results for both aggregated and multi-topic author categorisation

Batik Pekalongan is one of renowned batiks in Indonesia with its beautiful and fascinating varies of motif and colors. Since batik producers always dynamically follow the changing times, trends as well as accept other cultures’ influence come to the city, therefore the products are rich with a mixed of varies of motif and colors. In the other hand, tulle fabric, or commonly said as tile, is one of popular fabrics to be used as a raw or additional material for kinds of fashion products. Because of its unique characteristic, tulle fabric has a great potential to be more beautiful when it is produced optimally. Therefore, a mixing of two kinds of fabric with different characteristics is performed. It comes with deeper visual analysis pertaining to the origin and development of the fabrics with literature review, field observation and survey. While experimental method is used to mix both fabrics. This research aims to socialize Pekalongan batik and tulle fabric and dig more its potential, so that by exploring both fabrics through mixing, it is expected that it can maximize the fabrics’ potential and improve the quality as well as good aesthetic value of each of the fabric and its mixture to enrich kinds of qualified-high-class- textile-material for fashion product
