Manche semantisch unterschiedliche homogenetische Farbenbenennungen in der lettischen und litauischen Sprache (zils :žilas, ruds :rùdas)
Straipsnyje analizuojamos dvi poros spalvų pavadinimų latvių ir lietuvių kalbomis - latv. zils : liet. žilas ir latv. ruds : liet. rudas. Šios žodžių poros formaliai atitinka viena kitą, tačiau jų reikšmės yra skirtingos, todėl minėtose kalbose šiais žodžiais apibūdinamos skirtingos spalvos. Remiantis tarmių, etimologinių tyrimų, senųjų žodynų ir tekstų bei folkloro duomenimis, bandoma nustatyti, kurioje iš dviejų kalbų (lietuvių ar latvių) išlaikyta senovinė reikšmė ir kokie semantiniai procesai įvyko plėtojantis analizuojamų spalvų pavadinimų reikšmėms. Minėtų spalvų pavadinimų analizė leido padaryti tam tikras apibendrintas išvadas: 1) spalvų suvokimas, kaip ir, pavyzdžiui, skonis, yra subjektyvus, todėl spalvų pavadinimuose galima didesnė semantinė diferenciacija negu būdvardžiuose apskritai; 2) akivaizdu, kad dalis spalvų pavadinimų atsirado palyginti neseniai ir kiekvienoje kalboje (latvių ir lietuvių) atskirai; 3) nemažai senųjų spalvų pavadinimų išsaugota folklore, ypač liaudies dainose. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Spalvų pavadinimai; Latvių kalba; Reikšmė; Raida; Names of colours; Lithuanian; Latvian; Meaning; DevelopmentThe article analyses two pairs of colour names in Lithuanian and Latvian languages: Latvian “zils” - Lithuanian “žilas” and Latvian “ruds” – Lithuanain “rudas”. These pairs of words formally correspond to each other, but their meanings are different, thus they are used as names of quite different colours in languages mentioned. On the basis of data collected from dialects, etymologic studies, old dictionaries, and folklore, the author aims to identify which of two languages (Lithuanian or Latvian) maintained ancient meaning and what semantic processes took place in the development of names of colours mentioned. The analysis of the names of colours mentioned allowed making certain general conclusions: 1) the understanding of colours, seemingly as, for example, taste, might be subjective, thus colour names might have greater semantic differentiation then adjectives in general; 2) obviously, some colour names appeared relatively recently, and individually in each language (Latvian and Lithuanian); 3) a large part of old colour names maintained in folklore, especially folk songs
Ar XVII a. latvių kalbos žodynai – patikimi senųjų reikšmių aiškinimo kelrodžiai?

This paper analyzes two of the 17th century Latvian dictionaries – the Lettus by Georgius Mancelius and the dictionary manuscripts of Christopher Fürecker from the end of the 17th century. The task of the paper: based on the experience gained working with the Historical Dictionary of the Latvian Language, to try and determine how reliable the translations of the meanings found in the 17th century dictionaries are and to what extent can they be used for determining the meanings in the historical dictionary.
Examples included in the Historical Dictionary of the Latvian Language are divided into several groups depending on the following aspects: 1) Whether a word of the Latvian language or its German translation is or is not commonly used nowadays; 2) Whether the meaning of these words have or have not changed to the present day. Within each group, one or more examples are considered, including a possible explanation of the meaning of the word in the Historical Dictionary of the Latvian Language.
Based on the examples given, it was concluded that, despite some unequivocal mistakes of explanation of the meaning, in most cases, the explanations of the meanings of the words in the dictionary of G. Mancelius and the manuscripts of the dictionary of K. Fürecker are given correctly, as evidenced by the use of the corresponding words in the related texts. It is more difficult to judge in cases when one must rely solely on dictionaries, the German translations of words, because the German language has also changed significantly since the 17th century; the old Latvian dictionaries contain obsolete words specific to the Baltic German language. In such cases, the historical dictionaries of the German language, dialect dictionaries, as well as the dictionary of the Baltic-German language, are helpful in understanding the word meanings. Consequently, many translations that originally seem like mistakes of the authors of the 17th century dictionaries, however, turn out to be correct after a more in-depth study and a careful analysis of the linguistic circumstances of that respective period.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
Straipsnyje analizuojami du XVII a. žodynai – 1638 m. Georgo Mancelio Lettus ir Christopherio Füreckerio XVII a. pabaigos rankraštinis žodynas. Publikacijos tikslas – remiantis patirtimi, įgyta sudarant Latvių kalbos istorinį žodyną, nustatyti, kiek patikimi XVII a.
Be to, Baltijos vokiečių kalbai būdingi specifiški žodžiai. Tokiais atvejais, nustatant reikšmes, žinoma, padeda vokiečių kalbos istoriniai ir tarmių žodynai, Baltijos vokiečių kalbos žodynas. Tačiau ir juose tai, kas iš pradžių gali atrodyti kaip XVII a. žodynų autorių klaidos, atlikus nuodugnesnę analizę, galų gale išaiškinama kaip korektiški ir to meto kalbą atitinkantys vartosenos atvejai

Lithuanian loanword "ģērbt" and its semantics in the 17th century Latvian texts
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Lietuvių kalbos skoliniai; Latvių tekstai; Semantika; Latvian texts; Lithuanian language loans; SemanticsThis article describes the usage of the Lithuanian loanword ģērbt and its derivatives in the 17th century Latvian texts with the aim to find out which meanings of these words are older and which are more recent developments, and what their routes of distribution have been. The word ģērbt and its derivatives appeared in written Latvian in the 1630s with the works authored and translated by Georg Mancelius, the Baltic German clergyman living in Zemgale. In the earlier religious texts in Latvian written by clergymen living in Riga and Vidzeme, an equivalent aptērpt was used. Obviously, in Riga and Vidzeme, unlike in Zemgale, the word ģērbt was not known until it was used by G. Mancelius. As his influence on the written Latvian language grew, the usage of ģērbt and its derivatives increased rapidly. The relatively large number of derivatives possibly shows that the word had been in use in Latvian (namely, in its subdialects spoken in Zemgale) already for some time before the 17th century. In the 17th century texts, the word ģērbt and its derivatives have been assigned four main meanings – 1. ‘to create, to cultivate’, 2. ‘to dress, to clothe’, 3. ‘to decorate, to make pretty’, 4. ‘to beat’ (this meaning, most probably, was an error in the manuscript by Christoph Fürecker). The first three meanings partly coincide with those of the Lithuanian word ger͂bti, which obviously confirms the Lithuanian origin of ģērbt. The first instances of the usage of ģērbt with these meanings appear almost simultaneously, while their duration of usage has been varied. The meaning ‘to create, to cultivate’ can be found only in the 17th century texts; the meaning ‘to decorate’ was known until the beginning of the 20th century but nowadays is not used anymore, while the meaning ‘tērpt’ still dominates to this day
Ethnonyms in Latvian texts of the 16-17th centuries: Latvians, Lithuanians, Russians
The objective of this article is to analyze the details of how these ethnonyms are used in these texts, the meanings attributed to them (especially in the case of ethnonyms denoting Lithuanians and Russians) and the differences from their usage in folklore. It is concluded that latvietis and latvis – two ethnonyms denoting Latvians – can be found in texts (including unpublished manuscripts) dating back as early as the 17th century. The majority of them are practical texts, such as dictionaries, but there are original religious texts addressed to Latvians themselves, too – e.g., Eernst Glück’s preface to his New Testament translation of 1685, or the sermon books by Georg Mancelius. The ethnonyms denoting Lithuanians – such as leitis, lietaviets and lietavnieks – also appear in 17th century dictionaries, occasionally also in the sermons by Mancelius. However, it is not always possible to tell whether these terms are used to denote an ethnicity or the inhabitants of the respective country. Unlike Latvian folksongs, the 17th century texts never use the ethnonym leiši to refer to Latvians. Regarding the ethnonym denoting Russians in the early Latvian texts, there are several differences from the usage of denotations of Latvians and Lithuanians: 1) The word krievs (“Russian”) appears already in the 16th century; 2) It is included not only in the first Latvian lexicographical sources and in original religious texts (for instance the sermon books), but also in translated religious texts, where it has been employed as an equivalent of the ethnonyms used in the original texts; 3) In the 17th century, the word krievs has sometimes been included in compound botanic terms denoting plants introduced from other countries

Names of Snakes in Latvian Texts of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
Names of Snakes in Latvian Texts of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
This article analyses the naming of snakes in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Latvian texts which are taken from the Corpus of Early Written Latvian Texts, containing the first Latvian dictionaries, religious texts, and some secular texts. The objective of the paper is to try to determine how precisely the translators of religious texts rendered names of snakes, and to ascertain whether any semantic changes have taken place, or whether religious texts show specific use. The study also aims to find out if taboo of dangerous animals, snakes in particular, and related euphemisation is reflected in early Latvian texts. The paper focuses on four Latvian words: čūska, odze, zalktis, and tārps; two of them, odze and zalktis, from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries until present time, have undergone significant semantic changes, probably because of euphemisation triggered by taboo. Comparison with the Lithuanian language allows to conclude that such usage, different from Modern Latvian, is neither specificity of old texts, nor incompetence of translators, but rather historical language facts. It is also established that in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries animals as well as plants were not so strictly separated in peoples’ minds, the borders between their names were more fluid, therefore any of snakes’ names could be attributed to any snake species in Latvia.
Nazwy węży w szesnasto- i siedemnastowiecznych tekstach łotewskich
Niniejszy artykuł analizuje nazwy węży w szesnasto- i siedemnastowiecznych tekstach łotewskich, pochodzących z korpusu wczesnego piśmiennictwa łotewskiego, zawierającego pierwsze łotewskie słowniki, teksty religijne i świeckie. W okresie od XVI i XVII wieku do czasów współczesnych, dwa z nich, odze i zalktis, uległy znacznym zmianom semantycznym, prawdopodobnie wywołanym eufemizacją wynikającą z tabu.
