sociological perspective, raises the question of an opera’s film adaptation paired with the
aesthetic endeavours of filmmaking. How does Bergman succeed in adapting "The Magic Flute"
to a contemporary, mainly Swedish, 1975 audience to whom his film is intended? How does he develop his aesthetic contribution as he comes face to face with the difficult choice between owing respect to the opera, in terms of the libretto’s content and of its reception, and envisioning a work of its own? Through its telecast, Bergman’s film makes the opera accessible to the public at large. By rearranging the libretto, translated into Swedish, it attunes Mozart’s work to contemporary issues. It also bears aesthetic traits which express Bergman’s ideas about the theatrical performance of an opera and has left its imprint on the history of
operas on screen
Since the 1970s and disco, Montreal has enjoyed a reputation as a party city where dance music has been an important part of the cultural nightlife. Around this musical phenomenon, scenes have developed, being a part of a more global local and transnational culture. Socio-musicological research on the reception of popular underground electronic music - particularly techno, which is enjoying increasing popularity - is scarce when one leaves the framework of festivals, free parties and rave parties and looks at "ordinary" urban practices. This thesis focuses on the Montreal techno scene and its audiences.
Surveys on cultural practices tend to portray audiences as homogeneous, but this work allows us to nuance this idea. By considering techno as a scene rather than a subculture, it allows us to account for the diversity of practices and the dynamics that exist between the different actors and objects that make up this constantly moving space.
In order to learn more about how techno takes root in Montreal, we have been frequenting the scene since 2014 and began a period of participant observation prior to the pandemic. We distributed a questionnaire on the Internet (n= 336). At the end of fifteen semi-structured interviews conducted this fall, during which we used the photo-elicitation process, we approached the social representations of techno fans on the scene through images. We have done the same exercise with the music to grasp the meaning that the listeners give to it.This breakthrough in the Montreal techno scene allowed us to question the definition of techno, to map its places of diffusion, to discover the Montreal public and their practices. Our results lead us to believe that there is not one techno scene but many

This article outlines a heuristic and hermeneutic space in which to situate the music of Yves Daoust. Through an inquiry, both musicological and sociological, into the historical references and sound objects found in Daoust's work, the author examines the poetic processes whereby the composer associates himself with his audiences through references to symbolic landmarks and through the evocation of a common sociocultural experience. From there, it will possible to question the status of the work's authenticity in relation to the individual, and to determine the extent to which this is audible in the music. The notion of identity is essential to the understanding of the dialectic between memory and distance, and between identification and critical departure, in the face of the works' allusions to specific locations and events. The reader will gain a sense of the different levels of understanding one can bring to Daoust's music, as well as an appreciation for the questioning of identity underlying his works, leading to a richer sense of the music
Stravinsky and France: Reception, interactions and legacy
Widely regarded as the greatest composer of the twentieth-century, Igor Stravinsky shot to international fame following the Paris premieres of his 1910-13 Russian ballet trilogy that culminated with The Rite of Spring. With France more than any other country playing a decisive role in launching his career, Stravinsky became the undisputed icon of the Parisian avant-garde, exploiting an unparalleled mediatic flair for self-promotion at a time when media, communications, and networking exploded. This might explain the breadth of his significance for French music and why, more than any other of his prestigious colleagues, he gives way to a dizzying array of interconnections of various modes and in various milieux. Taking stock of recent developments in Stravinsky and twentieth-century French music research, this substantial volume offers a new critical assessment of Stravinsky’s multifaceted relationships with French culture and society, as well as the response of French culture to his music, during the years he gravitated around France (1910-1939). Twenty essays by internationally recognised and emerging scholars are brought together by contributing editors François de Médicis, Caroline Rae and Danick Trottier to present new perspectives on the composer’s reception, interactions and legacy in France
