In-kind Contributions for two ERICs in one National Initiative: Practices and Experiences in CLARIAH-DE

    No full text
An ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) operates and provides research infrastructure offerings, usually within a disciplinary scope, for researchers regardless of their national or institutional background. Apart from direct funding, an ERIC is built upon the national contributions from partner countries, notably cash and in-kind contributions. This concept, the procedures, advantages and options for future enhancement are described in this paper from the German perspective focussing on the in-kinds. The paper is intended to support an informed discussion on the advancement of the in-kind contribution concept. The overall aim is to contribute to the efficiency and uptake of the ERICs’ research infrastructure offerings

Text+ und die GND – Community-Hub und Wissensgraph

    No full text
Authority data play a central role in the interoperable description and semantic linking of distributed data sources in the NFDI Text+ consortium, which is dedicated to the research data of language and text-based disciplines. The Integrated Authority File (GND) in particular is a key hub at the centre of a nascent cross-domain knowledge graph. This function is to be developed and expanded within Text+ through the establishment of a GND agency for language and text-based research data. The aim is to create low-threshold, quality-assured ways in which researchers can participate. A further aim is to expand the level of networking within the GND, including through terminology mapping. The specifc requirements and use practices are exemplifed by the data domains of Text+

Korpora modular, verteilt, vernetzt in Text+

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Integrating optical character recognition and machine translation of historical documents

Machine Translation (MT) plays a critical role in expanding capacity in the translation industry. However, many valuable documents, including digital documents, are encoded in non-accessible formats for machine processing (e.g., Historical or Legal documents). Such documents must be passed through a process of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to render the text suitable for MT. No matter how good the OCR is, this process introduces recognition errors, which often renders MT ineffective. In this paper, we propose a new OCR to MT framework based on adding a new OCR error correction module to enhance the overall quality of translation. Experimentation shows that our new system correction based on the combination of Language Modeling and Translation methods outperforms the baseline system by nearly 30% relative improvement

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
