ISAAC NEWTON E A ÓPTICA
Philosophical, chemical, astronomical and anatomical studies have been presented throughout history by great personalities and thinkers. Sir Isaac Newton, author of Optics, is one personality of his time. Explorated and demystified in his time the geometric and physical optics applied today. This study is a review of indexed articles on the Google Scholar platform, with reference to Isaac Newton\u27s contribution to modern science. Objetive is present the optical concepts of refraction, reflection, visible spectrum of colors and geometric optics applied today and their evolution and application to the academic world.
The study by César Nardelli Cambraia, published in 2017, comes to light as the first edition to disclose the critical text of the Portuguese medieval translation of the Book of Isaac, an ascetic treatise originally written in Syriac around the end of the seventh century by Isaac of Nineveh . Careful work, based on the comparison of the four surviving testimonies in which the translation was preserved. It is a critical edition with the purpose of restoring the genuine form of the text, the original form of the Portuguese translation of the book in question. As the author himself states, it is a "synthesis work of a series of studies on the subject made between May 1996 and April 2017" (CAMBRAIA, 2017, p. XIII). The book presents, in a very well-grounded way, four parts. The first one contains relevant information on the life of Isaac of Nineveh and his works, specifically on the Book of Isaac, its contents, circulation in the Portuguese Middle Ages, historical course, description of the testimonies that make up its tradition, linguistic characteristics, and his publishing fortunes. Of the second, the critical text, the norms of edition, the criteria for the choice of the base text and variants, the transcription, special cases and the critical apparatus. From the third, the selective glossary. From the fourth, the index of citations and biblical and patristic references
Newly discovered cataclysmic variables from the INT/WFC photometric Hα survey of the northern Galactic plane
We report the discovery of 11 new cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates by the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric H alpha Survey of the northern Galactic plane (IPHAS). Three of the systems have been the subject of further follow-up observations. For the CV candidates IPHAS J013031.90+622132.4 and J051814.34+294113.2, time-resolved optical spectroscopy has been obtained and radial-velocity measurements of the H alpha emission line have been used to estimate their orbital periods. A third CV candidate (IPHAS J062746.41+014811.3) was observed photometrically and found to be eclipsing. All three systems have orbital periods above the CV period gap of 2-3 h. We also highlight an other system, IPHAS J025827.88+635234.9, whose spectrum distinguishes it as a likely high-luminosity object with unusual C and N abundances
Isaac of Nineveh\u27s Contribution to Syriac Theology: An Eschatological Reworking of Greek Anthropology
This dissertation responds to an explicitdesideratum from Robert Beulay, who, in his book La Lumière sans forme, calls for a presentation of Isaac\u27s thought with special attention to his sources.
Contrary to the belief of older scholarship, I conclude that Isaac\u27s anthropology and eschatology are much more than a Syriac repetition of Greek Evagrian thought; rather, they are influenced by John the Solitary, a Syriac author who has received less scholarly attention. Although Isaac refers to Evagrius, as well as Pseudo-Dionysius and Pseudo-Macarius, to define specific terminology, the influence of John the Solitary permeates all areas of Isaac\u27s thought.
The first part of this dissertation investigates the sources for Isaac\u27s anthropology. Isaac appropriates Evagrius\u27s definitions of the tripartite soul to explain how evil arises from the natural goodness of the soul and he uses Pseudo-Dionysius\u27s and Pseudo-Macarius\u27s definition of loving desire to explain how the soul naturally prepares the mind for the reception of heavenly knowledge, but these definitions only make sense within the context of John\u27s three degrees. The three degrees framework explains that the operation of the soul depends on the degree of ascetical renunciation performed by each monk.
The second part of this dissertation examines the sources for Isaac\u27s eschatology. Isaac rejects Evagrius\u27s eschatology, which focuses on returning the soul to the original purity of creation and instead emphasizes an eschatology in which the future state of the soul surpasses original purity. Isaac bases this future-oriented eschatology on John\u27s obsessive interest in the life of the world to come.
The third part of this dissertation investigates the sources for Isaac\u27s conception of wonder, which, I argue, is Isaac\u27s most significant contribution to Syriac theology. Wonder renders Isaac\u27s ascetical system coherent because it unifies anthropology with eschatology by accounting for the way that the material human being embraces the spiritual order of the world to come. Although Isaac turns to Evagrius and Pseudo-Dionysius in order to construct ancillary definitions for the term wonder, John\u27s conception of wonder as heavenly knowledge of the world to come is the basis for Isaac\u27s conception of the term
