Implementation of Visual Cues and Education to Increase Nurses’ Pain Documentation and Reassessment in the Intensive Care Setting

    No full text
Introduction: Addressing pain and its associated suffering is an ethical obligation for every nurse and healthcare provider (ANA, 2019). However, many healthcare providers do not provide adequate pain relief, resulting in unfavorable outcomes such as prolonged hospital stays and increased costs. Objectives: The primary aim of this quality improvement project was to enhance pain documentation in the intensive care unit. Methods: This quality improvement project employed a retrospective chart review focused on pain documentation. Pain documentation rates were audited every three weeks to evaluate adherence to the hospital’s pain management policy. Additionally, nurses participated in pre-study and follow-up surveys to assess changes in their knowledge and attitudes toward pain management. Results: Initial documentation rates for pain increased significantly during the quality improvement project, with a confidence interval of 95% CI = 97.14032% - 99.69217%, p = 1.019e-11. However, reassessing pain within 60 minutes, per hospital policy, was not statistically significant (95% CI = 70.90518% - 82.47147%, p = .2718), despite other findings being significant (95% CI = 40.07975 - 53.64351%, p = 9.146e-13). Lastly, nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management improved by an average of 2.18 units per nurse during the quality improvement project. Conclusion: The initial pain documentation rates were significant and aligned with the existing literature. However, the other findings did not reach statistical significance; this project highlights the importance of education and visual aids in improving pain management and documentation in the intensive care setting. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Information about petroleum in America prior to the nineteenth Century

The petroleum substances have been used a lot of centuries ago: bitumen has been used in Neolithic Period to fix head's hammer of stone and to set beads. The authors of this paper want to show the knowledge of bitumen and asphalt in South America until the 19t h century through documents of Spaniards conquerors. Besides, we have done a comparative study between different words to design these petroleum product

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

This essay thinks over some guidelines that are changing the education scenario today. Review the frustration and inability with which members of educational institutions face the challenges that the informational practices bring to the new learning scenarios. One case (that has gained visibility over several years), in which a teacher decides to make public his frustration and consequent resignation given the inability to empathize with their students is described. It also thinks over the imaginaries about the power of technology in education. As a way of conclusion it raises elements and approaches that are increasingly essential to investigate in the educommunicative scenario

The HUGOTM robotic-assisted surgery system (RAS, Medtronic, CA) consists of a 3D open console, four independent carts, and an integrated laparoscopic and robotic tower. Approved in 2021, it represents a novel alternative platform for robotic procedures. The aim of our study is to report the first-year experience with this system for gynecological procedures at two tertiary referral robotic centers. We prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed data from patients underwent gynecological robot-assisted surgery with the HUGOTM RAS, at San Paolo University Hospital (Milan, Italy), and Onze Lieve Vrouw (OLV) Hospital (Aalst, Belgium), March 2022–April 2023. Demographic characteristics, intraoperative settings, and perioperative outcomes were investigated. A total of 32 procedures were performed: 20 (62.5%) hysterectomies, 7 (21.9%) adnexal surgeries, and 5 (15.6%) pelvic floor reconstructive surgeries. In 2022 and 2023, 13 (40.6%) and 19 (59.4%) procedures were carried out, respectively. The median docking time was 8 min (IQR 5.8–11.5). The median console and skin-to-skin time was 52.5 min (IQR 33.8–94.2) and 108.5 min (IQR 81.5–157.2), respectively. No intraoperative complications occurred. Two conversions to laparoscopy managed without any additional complications were needed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first global series of gynecological procedures performed with the HUGOTM RAS. Our preliminary findings showed the system’s feasibility reporting promising results. The observed upward trend in the total number of procedures during the analyzed period is encouraging. Further studies are needed to assess a standardized method in the gynecological field with the novel platform
