    SCOUT: A small vacuum chamber for nano-wire grid polarizer tests in the ultraviolet band

    Within the Section of Astronomy of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Firenze (Italy), the XUVLab laboratory is active since 1998 dedicated to technological development, mainly UV oriented. The technological research is focused both on electronics and optics. Our last approach is dedicated to the development of innovative wiregrid polarizers optimized to work in transmission at 121.6 nm. The manufacturing of such optical devices requires advanced technological expertise and suitable experimental structures. First, nanotechnology capability is necessary, in order to build several tiny parallel conductive lines separated by tens of nanometers on wide areas to be macroscopically exploitable in an optical laboratory. Moreover, the characterization of such an advanced optical device has to be performed in vacuum, being air absorptive at 121.6 nm. A dedicated small vacuum chamber, SCOUT (Small Chamber for Optical UV Tests) was developed within our laboratory in order to perform practical and fast measurements. SCOUT hosts an optical bench and is equipped with several opening flanges, in order to be as flexible as possible. The flexibility that has been reached with SCOUT allows us to use the chamber beyond the goals it was thought for. It is exploitable by whatever compact (within 1 m) optical experiment that investigates the UV band of the spectrum. © 2011 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).     Top down fabricated silicon nanowire networks for thermoelectric applications

    A top down process for the reliable fabrication of very complex, large area (order of millimeter square), nets of well organized and connected silicon nanowires (SiNWs) is shown and discussed. It will be shown that these nets are equivalent to the parallel of many very narrow, millimeter long, silicon nanowires, that can be employed either for the fabrication of high efficiency thermoelectric generators or for nanosensing devices. The high reliability with respect to nanowire failure and the high tolerance with respect to silicon nanowire width dispersion are demonstrated by means of numerical simulations. Electrical measurements are reported and compared with numerical simulations, in order to confirm both the equivalence of the net to the parallel of millimeters long SiNWs and its high tolerance with respect to nanowire failure

    Surface roughness and electron backscattering in high aspect ratio silicon nanowires

    Four contact current voltage characteristics of high aspect ratio, moderately doped silicon nanowires will be presented and discussed. A nonlinear behavior of the current as a function of the voltage drop has been detected, at room temperature, in small silicon nanowires: the current increases quadratically with respect to the voltage drop increasing. The dependency of this nonlinear behavior with temperature is reported. In this work it will be shown that a possible explanation of this effect can be given taking in account the silicon nanowire surface roughness, that drives the carrier backscattering. This hypothesis is supported by Monte Carlo simulations based on a simple model. The simulation results are in qualitative agreement with the experimental data

    Methicillin resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from horses in Apulia Italy

    A methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus epidermidis strain was isolated from a saddle horse affected by osteolysis. MR coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCNS) were isolated from 11 of 14 (78.8%) horses housed in the same riding club. By typing of the SCCmec region, almost the strains displayed a non typeable (NT) pattern and possessed the ccr type 2. Altogether, the high prevalence of MRCNS and the detection of NT SCCmec types support the hypothesis that horses may represent a reservoir of MRCNS for humans and that equine MRCNS may act as potential source of resistance genes for other staphylococci

    Selective doping of silicon nanowires by means of electron beam stimulated silicon dioxide etching

    Direct patterning of silicon dioxide by means of electron beam stimulated etching is shown, and a full characterization of exposure dose is presented. For its high dose, this technique is unsuitable for large areas but can be usefully employed like a precision scalpel for removing silicon dioxide by well-localized points. In this work, this technique is applied to the definition of windows through the oxide surrounding top down fabricated n-doped silicon nanowires. These windows will be employed for a selective doping of the nanowire by boron diffusion. In this way, pn junctions can be fabricated in well-localized points in the longitudinal direction of the nanowire, and an electrical contact to the different junctions can be provided.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
