    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Quality-based registration refinement of airborne LiDAR and photogrammetric point clouds

    A big challenge in geodata processing is the seamless and accurate integration of airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and photogrammetric point clouds performed by properly considering their high variations in resolution and precision. In this paper we propose a new approach to co-register airborne point clouds acquired by LiDAR sensors and photogrammetric algorithms, assuming that only dense point clouds from both mapping methods are available, without LiDAR raw data nor flight trajectories. First, semantically segmented point clouds are quality-wise evaluated by assigning sensor-specific quality features to each 3D point. Then, these quality features are aggregated in order to assign a score to each 3D point based on its quality. Finally, using a voxel-based structure, a filtering step is performed to select only the best points used for the registration refinement. We assess the performance of the proposed method on two different case studies to demonstrate its advantages compared to a traditional ICP-based approach.     Bundle Block Adjustment with Constrained Relative Orientations

    This paper deals with bundle adjustment with constrained cameras, i.e. where the orientation of certain cameras is expressed relatively to others, and these relative orientations are part of the unknowns. Despite the remarkable interest for oblique multi-camera systems, an empirical study on the effect of enforcing relative orientation constraints in bundle adjustment is still missing. We provide experimental evidence that indeed these constraints improve the accuracy of the results, while reducing the computational load as well. Moreover, we report for the first time in the literature the complete derivation of the Jacobian matrix for bundle adjustment with constrained cameras, to foster other implementations

    Contextual classification using photometry and elevation data for damage detection after an earthquake event

    This research presents a processing workflow to automatically find damaged building areas in an urban context. The input data requirements are high-resolution multi-view images, acquired from airborne platform. The elevations are derived from a dense surface model generated with photogrammetric methods. With the principal objective of rapid response in emergency situations, two different processing roadmaps are proposed, semi-supervised and unsupervised. Both of them follow a two-step workflow of building detection and building health estimation. Optionally, cadastral layers may serve as a-priori knowledge on building location. The semi-supervised approach involves a data training step, while the unsupervised approach exploits the similarities and dissimilarities between sets of features calculated over the detected buildings. The change detection task is formulated as a classification task defined over a conditional random field. The algorithms are evaluated using two datasets (Vexcel and Midas cameras) and results are compared with ground truth data and specific metrics

    Aerial multi-camera systems: Accuracy and block triangulation issues

    Oblique photography has reached its maturity and has now been adopted for several applications. The number and variety of multi-camera oblique platforms available on the market is continuously growing. So far, few attempts have been made to study the influence of the additional cameras on the behaviour of the image block and comprehensive revisions to existing flight patterns are yet to be formulated. This paper looks into the precision and accuracy of 3D points triangulated from diverse multi-camera oblique platforms. Its coverage is divided into simulated and real case studies. Within the simulations, different imaging platform parameters and flight patterns are varied, reflecting both current market offerings and common flight practices. Attention is paid to the aspect of completeness in terms of dense matching algorithms and 3D city modelling – the most promising application of such systems. The experimental part demonstrates the behaviour of two oblique imaging platforms in real-world conditions. A number of Ground Control Point (GCP) configurations are adopted in order to point out the sensitivity of tested imaging networks and arising block deformations. To stress the contribution of slanted views, all scenarios are compared against a scenario in which exclusively nadir images are used for evaluation

    A critical review of automated photogrammetric processing of large datasets

    The paper reports some comparisons between commercial software able to automatically process image datasets for 3D reconstruction purposes. The main aspects investigated in the work are the capability to correctly orient large sets of image of complex environments, the metric quality of the results, replicability and redundancy. Different datasets are employed, each one featuring a diverse number of images, GSDs at cm and mm resolutions, and ground truth information to perform statistical analyses of the 3D results. A summary of (photogrammetric) terms is also provided, in order to provide rigorous terms of reference for comparisons and critical analyses

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
