Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Rzeczywistość odzwierciedlona czy zinterpretowana? Studium z filozofii fotografii
Issues connected to the pair of notions of image and reality have been present in philosophy at least since Plato’s times. The main question that accompanies the mentioned notions concerns the relation between image and reality. Does image present reality adequately, or is it perhaps a sort of falsification? However, this question may have no sense, because, as it is claimed for example by Richard Rorty, there is no possibility to differentiate between image and reality. An interesting exemplification of the mentioned issue is the philosophy of photography, where the question about representation takes the following form: does a photograph (as an image) adequately mirror given reality? The aim of this paper is to present the problem of representationalism and antirepresentationalism, first in the broad philosophical context (based on the example of Rorty’s considerations), and then in the field of the philosophy of photography (based on the example of Barthes’s and Flusser’s reflections).Issues connected to the pair of notions of image and reality have been present in philosophy at least since Plato’s times. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Modern moral reinterpretation of Jesus and its value to the philosophy of religion
The moral reinterpretation of Jesus conducted by Kant, Lessing and Feuerbach, is an interesting matter when it comes to the philosophy of religion. The abovementioned German philosophers claimed that Jesus ought to be understood only as a moral archetype and a revolutionist in morality. This concept arose on the grounds of moral religion which was one of the most interesting ideas of the Enlightenment. Thus, exploring this moral reinterpretation of Jesus is just an excuse to study the concept of moral religion. Despite the fact that this idea is no longer current, it has immense influence on the contemporary philosophy of religion. Therefore, understanding the concept of moral religion can broaden the context of the contemporary discussion
Obcy i gość – stosunek do Innego na gruncie religii
Attitude towards the Other can be considered in the context of religion in relations to the positions which religion appreciates or even creates through its ideological sphere. The aim of the following text is to show the change, introduced by postmetaphysical interpretation of religion, which refers to the perception of I and the Other relationship within religion. The beforementioned change is motivated by the will to reduce violence of the given metaphysical interpretation of religion in which the Other is presented as a Stranger. In contrast, on the grounds of postmetaphysical religion the Other becomes Guest, thanks to which an attitude deprived of violence is appreciated
Hermeneutics of the Holy Time: On the Ethical Eole of Skepticism in Religion
The aim of this paper is to present hermeneutics of the holy time. The main thesis I take into consideration is that the dialectic of holy and non-holy time through the awareness of finitude leads to skepticism which reduces religious violence. The holiness of a given time is therefore constituted on the ethical, rather than ontological grounds. The research aim in the case of this article is not to describe the factual state of affairs connected with the notion of the holy time, but rather to normatively put forward a certain interpretation of the holy time that would strive to present it as a means to reduce violence, and to reconcile it with the postmetaphysical account of (weak) religion
State's neutrality towards religion in light of Charles Taylor's concept of secularism
Charles Taylor przedstawia swoją koncepcję sekularyzacji w dziele Secularism and Freedom of Conscience, gdzie wyróżnia dwie grupy postulatów sekularyzmu. W tym artykule skupie się na omówieniu sześciu kwestii związanych z postulatem neutralności państwa wobec religii, które pojawiają się na gruncie filozofii Taylora, lecz zarazem wykraczają poza nią. Rozważania nad neutralnością państwa wobec religii stanowią również podstawę do postawienia pytania o sensowność sekularyzacji i jej realne zastosowanie w życiu publicznym. In the contemporary philosophy secularism is broadly discussed. However, the problem is far more complex than it may seem at the first glance. For secularism is not only state’s separation from religion, but also a number of other postulates and presumptions which are often forgotten. Charles Taylor presents his theory of secularism in the book Secularism and Freedom of Conscience where he distinguishes two groups of postulates of secularism. In this article I will focus myself on five matters concerning the postulate of neutrality towards religion, which arises on the grounds of Taylor concept, but also transcend it. Reflections on the state’s neutrality
towards religion also constitute a ground to ask about the sense of secularism and its real application in public life
The Postmetaphysical Future of Christianity
With regard to the “return of religion” in philosophy – as proclaimed by many contemporary philosophers – in this paper I reflect on the future of religion, especially Christianity (and specifically Catholicism), referring to Gianni Vattimo’s philosophy of religion and postmetaphysical concept of religion in general. After briefly discussing the main tenets of this account of religion, I consider multiple issues and problems connected to it, particularly: the status of religious practice and the Church, as well as the question of love which is central to the postmetaphysical account of religion. Other problems that I also tackle are: the motivations for the development of postmetaphysical religion concepts, their locality, their target group, and their status. In spite of many issues related to the postmetaphysical account of religion, I try to show that it can be considered the right direction for philosophy of religion, given its ethical awareness, its attempt to get away from violence and metaphysics, as well as its effort to adopt some of the most important contemporary philosophy’s findings into religion
