The extensive use of protecting structures covered with plastic permeable or not-permeable materials for fruit farming in wide rural areas may generate aesthetic pollution, apart from other negative environmental impacts on water cycle, air and agricultural soil. The variation in the visual perception of the agricultural land, that may modify the whole landscape characteristics, was examined through a GIS software and a three-dimensional modelling of the territory with solid extrusion and an overlap of the photographic images in which the fittings of protected crops were reproduced. The results of these simulations enabled an analysis of environmental and landscape impacts, and were discussed by introducing the concept of a “threshold” limit for the quantity of plastic-covered agricultural structures, together with possible technical modification of texture and colour of the cladding material that could mitigate the aesthetic and environmental impact

A nilpotency criterion for some verbal subgroups

    No full text
The word w = [xi1 , xi2 , : : : ; xik] is a simple commutator word if k ≤ 2; i1 ≠ i2 and ij i {1,...m} for some m>1. For a finite group G, we prove that if i1 ≠ ij for every j ≠ 1, then the verbal subgroup corresponding to is nilpotent if and only if |ab|=|a||b| for any w-values a,b iG of coprime orders. We also extend the result to a residually finite group G, provided that the set of all w-values in G is finite

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

By means of a compared analysis of the informative levels obtained from historical maps of different periods starting from year 1859, compared with more recent cartography through GIS and Image Processing technologies, the transformation occurred on rural land, environment and landscape was highlighted. The analysis was conducted with reference to an area of Basilicata Region, historically devoted to arboreal cultivation or wood-sheep farming, where starting from the end of the 19th century, thanks to the diffusion of mechanized techniques of cultivation and harvesting and of the industrial conversion of corn, an exploitation of wheat cultivation was observed. Through the digital processing of the maps that were found it was possible to reconstruct the three-dimensional shape of the land in the study area and, thanks to a photo-mosaic procedure, virtual reconstructions of the land in different time periods were achieved too. The obtained results in terms of land modification enabled therefore the drawing up of land use maps from which, considering the carbon dioxide mean consumption of different crops, also an environmental balance of the study area regarding the CO2 sequestration capacity was set out. Through the implementation of the Digital Terrain Models, enriched with the drape of land cover pictures, it was finally possible to evaluate in a scenic way the morphological and vegetation variations of agro-forestry landscape, simulating an hypothetical and virtual historical jump backwards enabling the analysis of the natural and anthropic changes of rural land, able to affect in an often deep way the structure of whole ecosystems

Historical Cartography and GIS for the Analysis of Carbon Balance in Rural Environment: a Study Case in Southern Italy

    No full text
Human activities impose a transformation of the extra-urban land that may lead to the modification of the frail equilibrium of whole ecosystems. Sound planning strategies should be therefore pursued, employing a multidisciplinary approach that should take into account geographical, environmental and landscape factors as variables interacting among themselves and with the social and economic aspects. In order to simultaneously analyse all these properties, tools able to manage, interpret and integrate several data are necessary. The present research has been developed using a geographical information system applied to historical maps in order to assess the environmental impact of land use transformation, with a special emphasis on the atmospheric carbon dioxide balance. The analysis was focused on the transformation of a rural area in Southern Italy along the last 138 years, due to the change of and use through the introduction of corn and fruit orchards increasingly substituting olive trees and forested surfaces. The results showed that the cultivation conversion caused a loss of CO2 fixation value, that was accompanied by heavy emission of greenhouse effect gas in the atmosphere by urban settlements too. A sound rural land management should efficiently balance environmental pollution determined by the economic development; the methodology employed in the present case study could properly be transported into other areas, and the resulting analysis extended to different rural context
