Consumers' attitudes towards sustainable alternative protein sources: Comparing seaweed, insects and jellyfish in Italy
Research on alternative proteins is currently increasing to improve food security and sustainability but it is
essential to understand consumers’ perception and expectations to promote the success of future foods. This
study compared attitudes towards seaweed, insects and jellyfish, investigating the role of individual variables
and proposing a new approach focused on their potential gastronomic use. Using a survey, the willingness to try
(WTT) seaweed, insects and jellyfish, willingness to introduce them into the diet (WTD), perception of the impact
of consuming them on health and the environment, attitude towards their consumption in different gastronomic
modalities, personality traits and socio-demographic characteristics were collected from 1043 Italians.
The results showed a significant effect of the product on the perceived positive impact of consumption on
health (seaweed > insects > jellyfish) and the environment (jellyfish > seaweed and insects) and on WTT and
WTD (seaweed > jellyfish > insects). Indications on forms of consumption, food preparations, ingredients in
processed foods and food pairings more suitable for different consumer segments were obtained. The gastronomic
index (GI) developed in the present study was negatively correlated with age and food neophobia and
positively correlated with the perceived impact of consumption on health and WTD. The perceived impact of
consumption on the environment and previous tasting experience were positively correlated with GI only for
seaweed and insects.
Overall, this work provides both a new methodological approach focusing on the gastronomic perspective and
insights useful for the future development of seaweed/insect/jellyfish products able to meet the expectations of
consumers seeking alternative protein foods
Electronic nose evaluation of volatile emission of Chinese teas: from leaves to infusions
An electronic nose can be used to discriminate tea leaf quality, but to the best of the author's knowledge, studies that address the changes in electronic sensor signals between tea leaves and infusions are not available. In this framework, this preliminary work compared the volatile emissions of leaf samples belonging to the basic Chinese teas (white, yellow, green, oolong, black and pu erh) with those of their respective infusions using an electronic nose. Different signal responses were qualitatively and quantitatively obtained from the sensors both for the tea leaves and their respective infusions, showing that the leaf aroma is not transferred as it is into the beverage. The teas were grouped according to the different fermentation techniques based on the percentage variations in the sensor contributions to the complete description of the volatile profiles. The results indicated that the electronic nose is a suitable tool to monitor the volatile emission differences that occur between leaves and infusions in different tea types
Treatment of meralgia paresthetica (Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Neuropathy): A meta-analysis of ultrasound-guided injection versus surgery
Purpose: To compare ultrasound (US)-guided injections and surgery for the treatment of meralgia paresthetica (lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy). Methods: Two reviewers, independently, up to 10 October 2020 retrieved Studies that assessed the outcome of US-guided injections and surgery for the treatment of meralgia paresthetica from major medical libraries. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were adopted. Results: 399 studies were initially found, and the meta-analysis was conducted on 10 studies for a total of 149 patients. US-guided injections were done in three studies, surgery in seven studies. N = 38 % (57/149) of patients were treated with US-guided injection and 62 % (92/149) were treated with surgery. After US-guided injections, 85 % (49/57) of patients were treated successfully, whereas 80 % (74/92) were treated with surgery successfully from the clinical point of view. Differences were not statistically significant even with a slight heterogeneity of studies and outcome pooled on random-effect model. No comparative cohort study or RCT was conducted. Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference in treatment of meralgia paresthetica with ultrasound-guided injection or surgery. A RCT to compare a standardized US-guided approach versus surgery is essential to compare these techniques properly
Comparative analysis of different endovascular modalities to treat splenic artery aneurysms
BACKGROUND: Endovascular treatment of splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) is widely applied in the current clinical practice. The aim of this paper was to describe our single center experience on endovascular treatment of SAAs, comparing the outcomes obtained with two different METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2021, 35 patients with certain diagnosis of non-ruptured SAA were admitted to our center. Twenty-eight patients treated with packing or sandwich techniques were included in the study analysis. Primary outcome measures analyzed were 30-day mortality and mean hospital stay. Secondary outcome measures analyzed were freedom from splenectomy, and the rate of postembolization syndrome. Chi-square test was used to compare the two endovascular techniques. Statistical significance was defined as P value <0.05. RESULTS: The mean age was 56.5 +/- 12.8 years. Most of patients were females (22, 78.6%). Eighteen patients underwent sandwich technique (Group A), and the remaining 10 packing technique (Group B). Technical success was 100%. Intraoperative and 30-day mortality were 0 in both groups. Mean hospital stay was 4.2 +/- 4.0 days in Group A, and 2.3 +/- 3.9 days in Group B (P=0.93). Postembolization syndrome occurred in 9 cases (50%) in Group A, and in 4 cases (40%) in Group B (P=0.521). Only one patient in Group A (5.5%) required splenectomy (P=0.392). CONCLUSIONS: Packing and sandwich techniques seem to be similarly safe and effective in treating SAAs and have no statistically significant differences in terms of early mortality and morbidity. Quality Changes of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Packaged in Coloured Polyethylene Terephthalate Bottles Stored Under Different Lighting Conditions
In this paper, the influence of light storage and the exposure on quality parameters of a monovarietal extra virgin olive oil packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles were investigated. Coloured PET bottles (clear, green, orange, white and blue) were stored under different artificial lighting conditions in order to simulate the market environment (one fluorescent cool white lamp) and to perform an accelerated test (four fluorescent cool white lamps); storage in the dark was considered as a control. Total peroxide value, polyphenols, chlorophyll and carotenoids contents were, among the ones tested, the quality indexes most affected by lighting and were useful to investigate the bottle colour influence. Concerning the global quality of olive oil, under one fluorescent lamp, the best performances were obtained using blue and white PET bottles; whereas under accelerated conditions, the differences in the protection efficacy offered by the differently coloured bottles were reduced
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
