D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2001.Includes bibliographical references (p. 127-128).In frequency modulation (FM) systems, a continuous-time information signal is modulated onto a sinusoidal carrier wave by using the information signal to modulate the frequency of the carrier wave. In this thesis, a more general type of modulation is developed, of which FM is a special case, that we refer to as rate modulation. A rate modulation system consists of a dynamical system whose rate of evolution is varied in proportion to an information signal. The rate-modulated carrier wave is a scalar function of the state variables of the modulator. The thesis is focused on three aspects of rate modulation and demodulation systems. First, explicit expressions are derived for the power density spectrum of the rate modulated carrier wave for sinusoidal modulation. Second, a systematic procedure is derived for constructing demodulators. This procedure requires that the dynamical system used in the modulator has a known exponentially convergent observer. Assuming such an observer is known, a systematic procedure for constructing demodulators is given that depends on the underlying dynamical system in a simple manner. Finally, the quasi-moment neglect closure technique is used to approximate the signal-to-noise ratio when the carrier wave is corrupted by additive white-noise.by Wade P. Torres.Ph.D

No full textThe paper contains the results of an interesting research done by the author in some multinational companies which have branches in Romania, mainly in Bucharest, Arad and Timisoara. The objective of the research paper was to find out some particular aspects of the corporate management taking into account some key variables like: corporate values, leadership style, strategic perspectives and communication. In order to do this research we have developed a special survey based on a questioner. The survey shown us how all these above mentioned variables are influencing the corporate management and how important is each of them within the management process. The results of these surveys gave us the possibility to find out the way in which corporate management is influencing and is influenced by the variables considered. Last part of the paper presents some conclusions of our survey and the most important changes which should be taken into account by the corporate management team members in order to be more efficient and effective in their work.corporate management, cultural values, leadership, strategic perspectives, communication
Institutional reform in emerging securities markets
No full textIn the long run, sound, efficient securities markets can contribute to economic growth; in the short run, they play an important role in financial liberalization. The author provides a guide to issues involved in institutional and regulatory reform of securities markets - and a discussion of the practical implications of different policy options and sequencing decisions. He argues that establishing sound securities markets requires institutional development that is a substantial task for many developing countries. Prerequisities for the development of securities markets include: (a) a macroeconomic and fiscal environment conducive to the supply of quality securities; (b) a legal, regulatory, and institutional infrastructure that can support efficient operation of the securities market. Essentially such an infrastructure must provide four things: (a) certainty about property rights and contracts; (b) transparent trading and other procedures and public disclosure by companies of all information relevant to the value of their securities; (c) protection against unfair practices by insiders and intermediaries; and (d) protection against the financial failure of intermediaries and market institutions such as clearinghouses. The California law enforcement community's intelligence-led policing capacity
No full textCHDS State/LocalHindsight gives the nation much clarity regarding the cause of the failure to prevent the tragic events of 9/11. Calls for reform challenge the intelligence community, and law enforcement in general, to create the collaborative capacity to connect the dots, dare to imagine, and become accustomed to expecting the unexpected. Throughout the various reformation efforts over the last nine years, one central theme endures: the ability to share intelligence across interagency and intergovernmental barriers is imperative. The inextricable link between foreign and domestic intelligence demands that changes be made to smooth the continuum of efforts from public safety, to homeland security, to national security. If the quality of intelligence in this continuum is directly related to the depth and breadth of information available, then the participating agencies must be fully networked. Such a network is one way to transform the unknowingly relevant into potentially actionable intelligence. Promoter decommissioning by the NuRD chromatin remodeling complex triggers synaptic connectivity in the mammalian brain
No full textPrecise control of gene expression plays fundamental roles in brain development, but the roles of chromatin regulators in neuronal connectivity have remained poorly understood. We report that depletion of the NuRD complex by in vivo RNAi and conditional knockout of the core NuRD subunit Chd4 profoundly impairs the establishment of granule neuron parallel fiber/Purkinje cell synapses in the rodent cerebellar cortex in vivo. By interfacing genome-wide sequencing of transcripts and ChIP-seq analyses, we uncover a network of repressed genes and distinct histone modifications at target gene promoters that are developmentally regulated by the NuRD complex in the cerebellum in vivo. Finally, in a targeted in vivo RNAi screen of NuRD target genes, we identify a program of NuRD-repressed genes that operate as critical regulators of presynaptic differentiation in the cerebellar cortex. Our findings define NuRD-dependent promoter decommissioning as a developmentally regulated programming mechanism that drives synaptic connectivity in the mammalian brain

We are mock'd with art: theatricalizing devices in performances of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale

The selected performances were staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company (England, 1992), Théâtre de la Complicité (England, 1992), Folger Theatre (United States, 2009), and Companhia Atores de Laura (Brazil, 2004-2005). The discussion is structured following the notion of "performance text", proposed by Marco de Marinis (1993), which testifies to the importance of analyzing a performance in terms of its stage elements and also its contextual circumstances. Hence, the notion of "theatricalizing devices" is proposed in the present study as a tool to look at those devices employed on stage that can, simultaneously, comment on the theatrical medium and its conventions and help a production address themes and concerns related to the world outside the theater building. Additionally, the referred devices have to do with further fictionalizing the already fictional stage reality, without losing sight of the fact that those making and attending any given performance are inserted in an outside context.A presente tese discute o uso de recursos teatricalizantes em quatro produções teatrais de O Conto do Inverno, de William Shakespeare. As performances selecionadas foram produzidas pela Royal Shakespeare Company (Inglaterra, 1992), Théâtre de la Complicité (Inglaterra, 1992), Folger Theatre (Estados Unidos, 2009), e Companhia Atores de Laura (Brasil, 2004-2005). A discussão está estruturada seguindo a noção de "texto espetacular" proposta por Marco de Marinis (1993), a qual testemunha a favor da importância de se analisar uma performance em termos de seus elementos de palco e também de suas circunstâncias contextuais. Dessa forma, a noção de "recursos teatricalizantes" é proposta na presente tese como ferramenta para olhar aqueles recursos empregados no palco que podem, simultaneamente, comentar o meio teatral e suas convenções e ajudar uma produção a tratar temas e preocupações relacionados ao mundo existente para além do auditório do teatro. Além disso, os referidos recursos associam-se com ficcionalizar mais profundamente a realidade já fictícia do palco teatral, sem perder de vista o fato que os indivíduos que realizam e assistem a qualquer performance estão inseridos em um contexto exterior
The ethics of globalisation, free trade and fair trade
No full textIn this thesis I take a broadly consequentialist normative position and argue that because fair
trade is an inefficient method of aiding the poor, we should not support it and prefer free trade
goods with an appropriate and equal donation to a charity, designed to aid the poor and
encourage development in the undeveloped and developing world, instead. I also argue that
globalisation is the best means of development and we should support it as well. The thesis
progresses first by considering consequentialism, which I argue is especially suited to the
problem of analysing poverty in applied ethics, and some objections to it, which I briefly attempt
to answer. Following that, I consider fair trade and both some theoretical and practical problems
that it faces which my alternative does not. Then I briefly consider how globalisation results in
development and why it should be supported. Finally, I conclude with a brief chapter where I
respond to a few pertinent objections which arise on the periphery of my discussion that could be
seen as damaging to my position
