Putting the Culture into Bioculturalism: A Naturalized Aesthetics and the Challenge of Modernism
Get PDFIn Chapter 6 of Film, Art, and the Third Culture, Murray Smith argues for a biocultural account of the emotions, which treats them as an interaction between universal and cultural dimensions. He goes on to test this approach in relation to the representation of emotions in films by considering an example from the tradition of modernist filmmaking. This article suggests that, while Smith’s case is broadly convincing, there are several ways in which it could be presented more forcefully. In particular, his discussion of the challenge of modernism to a biocultural account could be strengthened by emphasizing rather than downplaying the role that various types of cultural knowledge play in our interaction with modernist works

Audience Engagement and Development at a Town and Gown Cinema
Get PDFThis paper presents the initial findings of a research project investigating the audience engagement and development strategies of UK ‘town and gown’ cinemas. These are independent cinemas located on a university campus or strongly affiliated with a local university that cater to both the academic community and the general population. While there is growing scholarship on audience formation and regional cinema culture in the UK, there is little understanding of the particular challenges such cinemas face as they seek to offer a wide range of films while simultaneously serving a wide range of audiences.
The paper takes as a case study the Gulbenkian cinema, situated on the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data about the cinema, as well as interviews with its programming and marketing team, it examines the Gulbenkian’s current programming strategies, the relative success of different types of film screened in 2019-20 and the different types of audience that attend the cinema. It then outlines strategies that have been developed to tap into the various demographics that the cinema serves, including a number of student-focussed initiatives. In doing so, the paper offers an overview of some of the negotiations that must be made by a cinema that seeks to appeal to diverse and distinct audiences

No full textThis chapter discusses the role of the Media History Digital Library in a research project investigating the public perception of film directors in the classical Hollywood era. By analyzing data drawn from three fan magazines (Hollywood, Modern Screen and Photoplay) for the period 1934–1943, important insights can be gained into the reputation of specific directors among audiences, as well as what spectators understood the director’s job to consist of. Dominic Topp argues that it can be seen that the reputations of some directors who were known to contemporary audiences have diminished over the years, partly as a result of their omission from the canon of auteurs, which was established in the 1950s and is still extremely influential today
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
