Tony Jones; Or, the Expanded Autobiography
One of the first works of flux persona can be traced to cave painting. Settled within the cavernous shafts of Lascaux, Panel of the Wounded Man provides an early example of the human need to reproduce, duplicate, and create an alternative to physical flesh. Undoubtedly, artists have been employing the persona as a medium of artistic expression for millennia.
With the introduction of digital technology, this medium extends with greater efficacy. Writing an email, sending a text message or maintaining an online profile develops numerous incarnations of the self. Ultimately, these digital forms are not an actual person, rather, they are communicating on behalf of the author. Whether intentional or unintentional, our digital culture automatically produces multiple surrogates to the self. These objects of virtuality produce circumstances that condition the manner in which humans project, receive, and maintain complex versions of persona.
Tony Jones, or The Expanded Autobiography investigates persona and identity through the lens of the art making process. The project establishes a historical trajectory for the flux persona medium. Subsequently, it introduces the concept of expansion and positions flux persona within a conceptual framework. Finally, the Tony Jones exhibition provides a technical outline for the research. This model exempli fies versions of a praxis-based approach and provides a structure for the expanded autobiography. Overall, the work addresses the contradictory nature of the human persona. Ambiguously, it is one, and many, all at once.</p
